Rehabilitation plan for border migrants soon
Jammu, November 15 The plan includes reconstruction and repair of damaged houses alternative shelters in safer areas for the border migrants of Akhnoor, Kathua and Rajouri in Jammu Division, the Joint Secretary, Home Mr H.S. Brahma said here. Mr Brahma, who visited border areas and migrant camps in Akhnoor area along with state officials yesterday, said he took stock of the situation and interacted with the migrants. The migrants of these areas were keen on returning to their native villages but wanted their damaged houses be repaired/reconstructed, facilities for tilling their lands and alternative shelters at safer places. Referring to the Rs 76-crore package submitted by the state government to the Centre on border migrants’ rehabilitation, Mr Brahma said it was under consideration of the Centre and certain components had already been decided upon. However, since the cost of the package was high, a decision would be taken by the higher authorities after consulting the state government. The state and Central Government would have to share the expenses involved in the package. About Kashmiri migrants, the Home Ministry official said the government was making efforts to bring them back to the valley and an action plan for this would also be finalised in the next 30-45 days. As many as 444 flats- 144 in Anantnag and 300 in Badgam and Srinagar - were being constructed for them, he said and added this would be a temporary measure till their final rehabilitation in their native places in the valley. To a question on different yardsticks adopted by the Centre in providing cash relief to Kashmiri migrants and border migrants, Mr Brahma said the issue would be resolved as it was unfair to treat people differently in the same country.

NC questions Mehbooba’s London visit
Jammu, November 15 “It was not a delegation of the coalition government for promotion of tourism, the stated objective of the trip, but a delegation of the PDP,” an NC spokesman said here. The delegation had only members of the PDP which included the Mufti, Ms Mehbooba Mufti and Tourism Minister G.H. Mir, he said, adding no representative of other parties, including the alliance partner (Congress), were included. Taking exception to the presence of Ms Mehbooba in the official discussions with members of the House of Lords, the spokesman said this amounted to breach of protocol. “If Ms Mehbooba was part of the official delegation, it was misuse of position by the Chief Minister. If she was on a private visit, she had no business to be part of the official discussions,” he said.

Apartments to be
built for Pandits Jammu, November 15 The Joint Secretary, Home, Mr H.S. Brahma, who was on a two-day tour here to assess the situation, said the Centre would build 300 apartments for Kashmiri Pandits in Budgam district and 144 in Anantnag district. However, there were very few people who were willing to return to the valley because of the fear of terrorism. A lot of motivation was required to make them return to the valley, he added. He said the construction of these apartments would begin within a month and would be completed in six months. Mr Brahma, along with the Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Tara Chand, and the PWD Minister, Mr Madan Lal, also visited the six villages on the border with Pakistan in the Akhnoor area where about 6500 persons have migrated due to constant shelling from across the border. |
