Decision on Nehra’s inclusion today, says Wright Cuttack, November 4 Wright, who was here along with the Indian team for net practice, said Nehra had been bowling consistently in the nets. To a question whether Murali Kartik would replace of Kumble, Wright said, “It is an outstanding opportunity for Kartik. He has performed well whenever he has an opportunity to play for the team.” Talking about possible change in the batting order, he said it depended on the captain. It was his responsibility to decide the batting order, he said. The coach was all praise for the pitch. He said, “it is a very good one-day wicket and a beautiful stadium.” On Mohammad Kaif, he said, “Kaif has only played one innings in the tournament. We cannot draw any conclusion about his performance.” Abour Sehwag, he said, “Virender Sehwag is a match winner on his day. He can single handedly win the match for the team.” When asked to specify the area in which he felt need for improvement, Wright said, “There is no particular area where we need an improvement. But efforts will be on the entire aspect of the game.” He said, “we have learnt from the last match at Gwalior conceding less runs in the first 15 overs.” The Indian team arrived in Bhubaneswar yesterday and spent some time in the Kalinga stadium. Kumble opts out BANGALORE: Leg spinner Anil Kumble has opted out of Thursday’s triangular series one-day cricket international against New Zealand in Cuttack following the death of his father here yesterday. Sairaj Bahutule is likely to replace him. “Kumble has informed the board of his unavailability due to the sudden demise of his father K.N. Krishnaswamy,” Indian cricket board secretary S.K. Nair told PTI over the telephone today. Kumble would join the team for the November 12 match here against Australia, Nair said. “Bahutule is likely to replace Kumble but a final decision would be taken by the selectors and the team management,” Mr Nair added.

Fleming slams schedule NEW DELHI: New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming has said the ongoing TVS Cup tri-series was “descending into a farce” as the schedule suited hosts India, while early morning starts were ruining his team’s chances against world champions Australia. He slammed the organisers for making the Kiwis play the Aussies only day matches, which had resulted in early morning starts thereby ruining his team’s chances of making it the title clash. “They’ve got it wrong, you can’t start this early with wickets like this, there’s no point,” Fleming was quoted as saying on The New Zealand Herald website after his side’s fifth straight loss to Australia in Pune on Monday. “We’ve been on the wrong side of it twice and it makes the next game a lottery too. We can complain but it falls on deaf ears because India aren’t playing.

Delhi score 345 Patiala, November 4 After Punjab’s first innings folded up for 205 in the morning, 48 runs behind the visitors first innings total, the Delhi batsmen sent the leg weary fielders on a leather hunt for the entire day. Their opener Shikhar Dhawan scored a strokefull 144 and his 129-run first-wicket partnership with Gaurav Sharma (39) took the sting out of the hosts attack which looked pedestrian through out the day’s proceedings. Delhi by virtue of their 48-run first-innings lead managed to garner two vital points from the match while the hosts failed to get a single point. |
Victory due to team work, says Gagan Ludhiana, November 4 The star hockey player was in the city in connection with a felicitation function organised jointly by the Punjab Basketball Association and the Trident Group of Industries. Gagan said in the Afro-Asian Games at Hyderabad, the entire team played superbly though they were under tremendous pressure as they were without senior players such as Dhanraj Pillay, Baljit Singh Saini and Baljit Dhillon and the youngsters proved their mettle in crunch situations. Gagan Ajit praised Harpal Singh (replacement for Jugraj Singh) and Sandeep Michael whom he said, exhibited excellent capability to fill up the slots. When asked about the controversy which involved former captain Dhanraj Pillay and national coach Rajinder Singh at the Chennai airport when the team returned victorious after annexing the Asia Cup, Gagan Ajit Singh said the player should avoid talking to the media during the camps as well as during the tournaments. He further said coaches Rajinder Singh and Baldev Singh had done a wonderful job in preparing the boys to play under pressure and it was only because of this reason only that the boys were capable of bouncing back into the crunch situation as seen during the Asia Cup. |
Hockey stars join hands to promote game Jalandhar, November 4 Addressing a press conference here today, Indian hockey team star and President of the trust Baljeet Singh Dhillon and former Olympians Ramandeep Singh, Hardeep Singh and Harinder Singh Gill, said the trust would make arrangements to provide sports kits, infrastructure and equipments to upcoming players upto 16 years. The training would be imparted to the players by former Olympians and international players on regular basis and special camps would be organised at Ludhiana and Jalandhar. They maintained that the trust had decided to extend full financial help to support outstanding hockey players belonging to poor families. Besides, their education expenses would be borne by the trust. Dhillon said the main aim of setting up of the trust was to infuse killer spirit among the youngsters as hockey had witnessed a downfall at the grass-roots level during the past two decades. “In fact, we have approached some NRIs and sports promoters to fund the training programmes and to sponsor the selected players, “he said, adding that the venture would help restore the glory of Punjab, which was once known as the hub of international hockey players. He further said teams in different age group would be formed to contest in tournaments. |

East Bengal win in Durand Cup New Delhi, November 4 East Bengal, without their five regular players, looked listless in the midfield and played without any imagination for most part of the group B quarter-final league match at the Ambedkar Stadium. The highly tensed Kolkata Super League play-off against Mohun Bagan on Sunday seemed to have taken a toll on their players. East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmick blamed the referee for 3-2 result as he held the second goal of Indian Bank a clear foul. “We conceded the first goal through a silly mistake while the second one was a clear foul on Subhash Chakraborty,” he said.
