files defamation suit against BJP leader Shimla, November 4 Mr Virbhadra Singh appeared in person before the court, along with his advocates, and presented the complaint in which he alleged that Mr Baldev Sharma made baseless, frivolous and false statements to the press to tarnish his public image and to harm him politically. The CM stated that he enjoyed a good reputation in social as well as political circles since long but after the publication of news item published in the print media on the basis of his statement his image had been sullied. In the complaint it was alleged that Mr Sharma released a personal affadavit to the press alleging that Mr Virbhadra Singh was occupying land in excess of the prescribed limit under the local laws. He was pressuring the officials who were investigating the land matters. While talking to the press Mr Sharma had demanded that inquiry should be conducted by the Central Vigilance Commissioner. Mr Sharma had already written a letter to the Chief Justice of the High Court on the issue raised in the press statements, when he found that the High Court did not take suo mottu action in the matter, he filed a writ petition with a prayer to hand over the inquiries to Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) but the same was dismissed as withdrawn because of some legal infirmities. Mr Virbhadra Singh, while impleading Mr Sharma as accused in the case, alleged that because of his false and baseless statements his (Mr Virbhadra’s) image has been tarnished. He pleaded that criminal proceedings be initiated against Mr Sharma for penal action under Section 500 of the
IPC.

being probed, says CM Renuka (Nahan), November 4 Replying to a question, the Chief Minister said the government had found a number of hard disks containing data relating to different activities of the BJP regime. He said the matter was under scrutiny. He said in order to check corruption and to monitor the projects being executed by various departments, a committee of experts had been constituted. He announced that all old-age, widow and handicapped pension cases would be cleared by March 31. Regarding MoUs of power projects signed by the previous government, he said the Cabinet would take final decision in this regard on November 5. |
Case against CM fabricated: minister Palampur, November 4 Addressing mediapersons at the PWD rest house, he said there was no prima facie evidence against Mr Virbhadra Singh that could lead to the registration of a criminal case against him. He said the SP (Vigilance) who had conducted the investigations had written to the government twice that no criminal case could be made against Mr
Virbhadra Singh and the investigations should be dropped. However, he was asked by the government to review the records of the case. Investigation officers had said it was a Cabinet decision and Mr Virbhadra Singh could not be held guilty for extending undue favour and making additional allocations of khair wood to a particular factory. He said even the Law Department had expressed the same opinion in its communication. Former Chief Minister P.K. Dhumal had then asked the Additional Director- General of Police to avail the services of the Advocate-General in this regard. The Advocate-General managed to get an adverse opinion from the Additional Solicitor- General of India in the case which led to the registration of the case against the Chief Minister, he said. |

He said Mr Vajpayee’s contribution to the nation was that he had stability in the country. He rule out the possibility of the Congress coming to power at the Centre as the party had a weak leadership. Mr Shanta Kumar was at Gupt Ganga in connection with elections to the post of BJP district president said that the poll within the party was a healthy sign. He said the BJP was a growing party with expanding mass base. Dr Rajan Sushant, candidate for the president’s post and supported by the Dhumal faction resented the presence of the former Union Minister, Mr Shanta Kumar at Gupt Ganga. 8 given Police, Fire, Jeevan Raksha Medals Shimla, November 4 While Mr Sanjay Kumar and Mr K.C. Sadyal, Deputy Inspector-Generals of Police, Mr Ashok Sharma and Mr R.M. Sharma, Superintendents of Police and Mr Ramesh Chand, Police Inspector, were decorated with police medals, Mr Someshwar Singh Rana, Fire Officer and Mr Mangal Chand Negi, Lead Fireman, were decorated with Fire Service Medals. Mr Ram Singh of Kusari village, in Solan received the Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak, posthumously awarded to his daughter Kumari Vyasa Devi. She had exhibited extraordinary courage to save the lives of two drowning girls and in the process had sacrificed her own life. Mr Virbhadra Singh, Chief Minister, Mr Kaul Singh Thakur, Irrigation and Public Health Minister, Mr Raj Krishan Gaur, Agriculture Minister, Mr Kuldeep Kumar, Cooperative Minister, Mr Arvind Kaul, Chief Secretary, Mr A.K. Puri (DGP), Mr Ajeet Narayan, DGP (Vigilance) and enforcement and other senior civil and police officers, prominent citizens of the town were present at the ceremony.

Chief Justice opens court Hamirpur, November 4 Mr Justice Gupta announced that keeping in view the large number of cases, one more post of Civil Judge would be created at Nadaun. He said there were more than 2,500 cases pending with the new court, and it would not be possible for one judge to dispose of these. Mr Justice Gupta admitted that there were many practical difficulties in India regarding timely disposal of cases. The decision of the Himachal Pradesh High Court to sanction one more court at Nadaun which became operational from today was a step for the timely disposal of the cases and to provide speedier justice to the litigants. He expressed the hope that a judicial complex would be ready by the end of 2004. He urged the local MLA to initiate steps for the timely completion of the complex. Mr Justice Arun Kumar Goel advocated the need for another court at Nadaun in view of the large number of cases. He advised lawyers to shun the path of agitation and instead hold talks with the authorities concerned to solve their problems, if any. Mr Dharam Chand Chaudhry, District and Sessions Judge, welcomed the Chief Justice and the others, and thanked them for starting the new court at

Nurpur residents seek sessions court Nurpur, November 4 Mr Sat Mahajan, Rural Development Minister and local MLA, submitted a memorandum to him on behalf of the local residents, demanding the setting up of a district and sessions court. Addressing elected representatives of the local municipal council and panchayati raj institutions, Mr Justice Gupta underlined the need for preserving the rich heritage of the town and said it had a great potential to attract tourists. He urged the state government to formulate a master-plan to develop this area as a tourist spot. |
Art camp on Kalka-Shimla rail track Barog, November 4 After that the work will be exhibited at Delhi at Gallery Vyakt and Rabindra Bhawan , Lalit Kala Academy and thereafter it would become a part of the Northern Railway collections. The monographs prints of these work will be circulated all over India. The camp would also be attended by art critics, photographers and filmmakers to document the event. |

The Hamir Utsav samiti chairman and Hamirpur Deputy Commissioner, Mr Devesh Kumar, presented a cap, a shawl and a memento to Mr Thakur. Youth drowned
in lake Nahan, November 4 The body of the victim was recovered this evening from the lake by divers of the Army and has been handed over to his kin after a post-mortem. Meanwhile, Rattan Singh (25), a resident of Singi village in Kathwar Bhoj of Shillai
tehsil, was found dead in an HRTC bus, which returned from Renuka last evening. After conducting a post-mortem, his body was handed over to his family members. |
