Mann seeks probe into langar poison case New Delhi, November 4 Santosh Rani and Balwant Singh who occasionally performed seva at the langar hall of Golden Temple were arrested after they tried to throw some poisonous powder wrapped in a paper in the dal which was to be served for langar. Mr Mann, a SGPC member, told TNS that the Honorary Secretary of the SGPC, Mr Manjit Singh Calcutta, had assured to probe into the incident. “The Punjab Government and the Government of India, through its intelligence agencies should take this very seriously. Mr Mann said this was not for the first time that the people had tried to create mischief inside Golden Temple. He alleged that right wing fundamentalists had in the past thrown cigarettes inside the Golden Temple complex. The National Commission for Minorities Chairperson, Mr Tarlochan Singh, said people treat langar as God’s gift and anybody belonging to any religion could go and do seva for langar. The incident calls for more vigilance as the mischief makers could play mischief anytime. “I’ve received a number of calls today and Sikhs are very upset over the incident. But, I don’t think this will stop visitors from having langar. Every Sikh who visits the Golden Temple must have langar,” he added. |
Buddhist scholar dead New Delhi, November 4 Popularly known as Bakula Rinpoche, he was born on May 19, 1917, in the royal family of Ladakh. He was recognised as the 19th incarnation of Aarhat Bakula at the age of five and installed as the Head Lama of Pethub (Spituk) monastery of Ladakh. In 1927, he left for Tibet for higher studies and joined the Drepung monastery. There he obtained the highest degree in Buddhist philosophy and metaphysics. After spending 14 years in Tibet, he returned to Ladakh in 1941 and travelled all over the region giving sermons to the masses. For his services to monastries, he was regarded as Head Lama of Ladakh. Kushok Bakula represented Ladakh as an MLA from 1951 and was a minister in the Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet between 1953 and 1967. He was elected unopposed to the Lok Sabha the same year and represented Ladakh for two consecutive terms. He left active politics in 1977. SC enhances Central PG course quota for New Delhi, November 4 It also suggested that the legislature should strive to pass an Act for a uniform entrance exam for admission to the MD and MS courses in the country under the Central quota, A five-judge Constitution Bench, headed by the Chief Justice, Mr V.N Khare, said henceforth the Central quota and the medical college’s own quota for PG courses would be on the basis of 50 per cent for each category of students. At present the medical colleges provide only 25 per cent seats to Central quota students and reserve 75 per cent for their own students. The judgement came on a bunch of petitions that raised the issue of difficulties in getting admissions to MD and MS courses by medicos, who had got MBBS degree from medical colleges outside their states under the Central quota. They had said while the colleges from where they had done the MBBS course did not give them preference in admission to PG courses, the medical colleges of their states of domicile were denying them admission on the ground that they had limited seats of 25 per cent under the Central quota. The court said now the AIIMS would conduct an all-India entrance examination for the 50 per cent seats under the enhanced Central quota for admissions to medical colleges across the country. It further said the medical colleges would also give admission to their own medicos under the 50 per cent quota for their own students purely on the basis of merit, based on an entrance examination conducted by the university to which they were affiliated. With today’s directives, the seats for PG courses for the medicos under the Central quota are expected to go up to 4,000 from the existing 2,000. A s many as 18,000 students pass out every year from various medical colleges across the country and their first preference is to get admission to the MD and MS courses. |
Alliance Air fleet expansion suggested New Delhi, November 4 Participating in the discussion, members made a strong plea
that Pilots should be kept
out of the Industrial Disputes
Act, 1949 as they were heavily paid but were still getting the
benefit of the Act. The members backed the proposal for allowing Alliance Air to go for leased aircraft for fleet augmentation. They said, the fleet of Alliance Air was old and needed immediate strengthening. The members said since Indian Airlines and Air-India were going for leased route to augment their fleet, the same benefit should be extended to Alliance Air. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had launched a national airports upkeep initiative to improve passenger facilities and ambience of 24 airports at a cost of Rs 63 crore. This was part of new initiatives taken to make the aviation sector passenger-friendly, he said while addressing the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to the ministry. He said as a part of the strategy the secondary security check at ladder point had been dispensed with at 15 airports. Ladder point check would be resorted to only as and when directed by the Bureau for Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) under situations like high alert and operational requirements, he said. Touch free pre-embarkation security check system had been initiated at all airports in the country, Mr Rudy said, adding that restrictions on ground photography in the terminal building of civil aerodromes had been removed and use of mobile telephones inside the aircraft had been permitted when the aircraft was on ground with passenger door open except when certain activities like aircraft fuelling were in progress. Contingency plans in respect of civil airports in the country were being revised. The government was actively processing new civil aviation security rules to
strengthen aviation security in the country on International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) guidelines, he said. Provision to handle cases like Purulia arms dropping and appropriate punitive measures against hoax callers had been suggested in the proposed new legislation. Members were of the opinion that a survey should be conducted to find out the potential for helicopter service in the country and Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd should extend its service to holy and tourist places having a potential for such service. Members also felt that Pawan Hans had been in the use of
government and public sector undertakings and it was time it should explore the market in the private sector. Members of Parliament who attended today's meeting were Mr Tarlochan Singh Tur, Mr Tarit Beran Topdar, Mr Ratilal K. Verma, Mr Paban Singh Ghatowar, Mr M.V.V.S. Murthi, Dr Madan Prasad Jaiswal and Mrs Jayaben Thakkar from the Lok Sabha and Mr Santosh Bagrodia, Mr N. Jothi, Mr Praful Patel and Mr Rajeev Shukla from the Rajya Sabha. |
Top Army officer told to quit New Delhi, November 4 The AHQ has asked the Major-General General Staff at Pune, Maj-Gen Dalgit Singh, to take over as the Commander of the Dimapur Corps, which has been fighting insurgency in the North-East and had also taken up operational responsibilities along the border with Pakistan, following the acceptance of the "pre-mature" retirement papers of Lt-Gen Rajinder Singh. The Commander had put in his papers last week. He was appointed chief of 3 Corps this year and had earlier led a key infantry division in Jammu and Kashmir. Although the Army was not ready to comment on the high-profile "marching orders" being given by the AHQ, sources here said that there was a possibility of the officer being found guilty of misconduct in "personal matters". The official statement by the Ministry of Defence was that he had resigned from service due to personal reasons. Sources here said that after the allegations against the former Commander were found to be correct, the Army authorities here decided to ask Lt-Gen Rajinder Singh to put in his papers rather than sacking him from service, keeping in mind his seniority and the service he had rendered to the force. After the unceremonious exit of Lt-Gen B. Masih of the Kargil-based 14 Corps and then of Air Marshal M.S. Sekhon from the Indian Air Force last year for seeking political patronage for forwarding his career, Lt-Gen Rajinder Singh becomes the third officer to bow out of service unceremoniously in the last three years. He, incidentally, was heading an inquiry into the alleged misuse of funds in a hospital under the Kolkata-based Eastern Command. However, his removal is said to be in no way connected to the inquiry. |
Charles gives ‘muharat’ clap for film on Pandey Mumbai, November 4 Prince Charles was present on the sets of the film ‘The Rising’ at Hotel Oberoi here and after meeting the Indo-British joint team, took hold of the clapper to signal the cameras to roll. Soon thereafter, Bollywood star Aamir Khan, famous for his anti-tax film ‘Lagaan’ (also set in pre-independence India) and British actor Toby Stephens rendered the dialogues in the presence of the visiting royal guest. Their performance was appreciated with applause by the prince and other guests. A calm and composed Prince Charles watched the scene,
depicting the first hint of an uprising against the British rule, flagged off by him, from the sidelines. Before giving the clap, Prince Charles interacted with the film crew and enquired about the whereabouts of the location, the costumes and the story line. ‘The Rising’, believed to be the costliest-ever film to be filmed in Bollywood, is being made both in English and Hindi. It revolves around the 1857 uprising when Indian
soldiers, Hindus as well as Muslims, had revolted against the British East India Company, over fears that the cartridges of their rifles contained animal fat, forbidden by their respective religions. With the 1857 revolt as the backdrop, the film also depicts the story of the friendship between Pande and Gordon. Prince Charles interacted with Aamir Khan regarding the role and the challenge it posed for him. He also shared jokes with Toby Stephens asking him about his role.

BJP hits back at Digvijay New Delhi, November 4 The demand made by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh for derecognition of the BJP and the lotus symbol was "not only absurd", but also an attempt to cover up several cases of corruption in Madhya Pradesh, BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told newspersons here. "The Digvijay government has made a record of the cases of
atrocities against women in the nine years of its rule. In Rajasthan, a woman sarpanch was paraded naked, in Shivpuri a Dalit sarpanch was raped. Another incident of rape in Behil shows the attitude of the Congress regime towards women," Mr Naqvi said. "The party which rules Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Delhi has no real issues or achievements to flaunt and that is why it is involved in mudslinging and making baseless charges against the BJP," he said. |
22,200 names on voters’ list may be fake Bhopal, November 4 Mangavan is the constituency of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker, Mr Shreenivas Tiwari. The “fake” entries were identified after a door-to-door survey conducted by over 450 government employees deputed from Jabalpur division. The teams, accompanied by the jawans of Special Armed Force (SAF), conducted the survey between October 28 and 31. A special revision of the electoral rolls of the Mangavan constituency was ordered by the Election Commission following complaints of widespread discrepancies. The Mangavan voters’ list was the first to attract the attention of the Election Commission. In February this year, a BJP delegation had submitted to the Election Commission documentary evidence in support of the allegation that around 15,000 bogus names had been added to the voters’ lists in the Mangavan constituency. Some 1,400 adults were listed as living in just one four-room house. |
