Suffering sullage and stench in school
Ludhiana, August 1
Inundated classrooms, flooded grounds and passages, accumulation of water outside the main gates of many government schools in the district in low-lying areas brought their functioning almost to a halt after a heavy downpour this morning. The day was marked by poor attendance of the students as well as the staff members. While most of the schools start at 8 am, it had started raining heavily by 7.30 am.

The Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party have sought the resignation of the city Mayor, Mr Nahar Singh Gill, for acting in a “dictatorial manner”. The leaders of these parties, while addressing a joint press conference, claimed that the Mayor had lost the confidence of the House and he had “no moral right” to continue in his post.

Action sought against missing boy’s father

Various teacher unions have demanded action against a resident of Bilaspur village, who according to them had allegedly harassed an activist of the Democratic Teachers Front and Principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Nathu Majra, and his minor son by falsely implicating them in a child kidnapping case.

Controversial Sant Shamsher Singh Jaghera was admitted to the Civil Hospital today after he complained of severe pain in one of his arms. The doctors diagnosed that there was a fracture and his arm was plastered. He was beaten up by people when caught raping a woman two weeks ago. He has complained of the pain now.

Rishi Nagar girl raped
Ludhiana, August 1
On the statement of a girl residing in Rishi Nagar, the Haibowal police has registered a case under Sections 376 and 342 of the IPC against a boy of the same locality for allegedly raping her on Thursday morning.

Teej celebrated at Love Dale
Ludhiana, August 1
Kids of Love Dale Montessori celebrated the arrival of Sawan during a colourful function held here yesterday.
Rain forced the kids to celebrate the festival indoors. The school hall was decorated with flowers, cuttings of rainbows, clouds and scenes from Punjabi culture.

Plantation day celebrated

The Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, celebrated plantation day in the spirit of vana mahostava. The function was organised by the Department of Botany to promote plantation for a healthy environment. Dr G.S. Sidhu from the Department of Floriculture, PAU, gave a lecture to the students about the importance of trees in human life. He highlighted the various aspects of the plantation of trees.

Life-term for killing  paramour
Ludhiana, August 1
A fast track court has sentenced Gurjant Singh of Rajgarh village to rigorous life imprisonment on the charge of murdering his alleged ‘paramour’ Jagroop Kaur in August 2001. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 5000 upon the accused.

Giving a stupendous performance, students of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, Ludhiana, recorded a 3-0 win over Alpine International Public School, Green Land Senior Secondary School, G T Road, beat Government School, Cemetery Road, 3-0 while Alpine International Public School defeated Kundan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines, 3-1 to win the titles in the under-14, under-17 and under-19 groups, respectively in the girls section of the Zonal Schools Tournament that began at various venues here today.
