Bus stand shop allottees owe Rs 1.42 cr to HRTC Shimla, April 25 The corporation has to recover more than Rs 1.42 crore from the allottees with Shimla topping the list with highest outstanding amount of Rs 56.50 lakh. It is followed by Una (Rs 28.46 lakh) and Kulu (Rs 27.64 lakh). As the corporation has not been managing the bus station properly, the government set up the Bus Stand Development Authority for the purpose. However, it also has failed to recover dues which are increasing with each passing day. Intriguingly, those who have been allotted shops are making money but are not paying the corporations dues. Most of the shops have been occupied by influential persons at low rent. However, they are not ready to pay it even. The corporation also never made serious effort to recover the arrears. Even if certain officer took initiative to recover the dues, the allottees used political connections and had the move stalled. The financial health of the corporation
has also been affected due to government’s failure to provide its due. It did not pay a penny to it for the free travel facility granted to policemen,
even though a fixed sum was being deducted from their salary from 1987-88. Initially, Rs 20 were deducted but the amount was increased to Rs 50 per month from the year. However, till date no money had been given to the corporation on this account. The arrears come over Rs five crore. While there is no likelihood of the government releasing the arrears to the corporation it was recently decided that the amount deducted from salaries will be pad direct to the corporation from the current year. Consequently, the corporation would get over Rs 72 lakh a year. Mr G.S. Bali, Himachal Transport Minister, said that the Congress government was taking all possible steps to improve the functioning of the corporation. He said a special drive would be launched to recover the arrears of rent. In future instead of constructing shops permission would be granted to the unemployed youths to set up fast food, coffee, juice shops. This would also help keep the bus stations clean. |
