Togadia’s arrest: Dhumal decries Rajasthan govt
Our Correspondent

Hamirpur, April 17
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Himachal Chief Minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal lambasted the Rajasthan government for arresting and registering a case of sedition against (VHP) Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s International General Secretary, Praveen Bhai Togadia.

On the arrest of Mr Togadia in Ajmer, Mr Dhumal said the Rajasthan government was inviting troubles for the people of India. He said, “Togadia committed no crime. He simply went to distribute tridents among VHP workers. How this action can be termed anti-national and threat to communal peace.

Mr Dhumal said the Sangh Parivar only wanted to construct Lord Ram’s temple at Ayodhya. Mr Dhumal warned Himachal Chief Minister, Virbhadra Singh against harassing political opponents.

Mr Dhumal also criticised the Congress government for making not Dharamsala the winter capital of state.

He claimed the BJP developed all parts of the state without regional bias. The Congress party should develop all parts of the state on equal basis, he added.

The BJP leader warned the government against harassing the officers who had found him (Virbhadra Singh) guilty of omissions and commissions. These officers had worked as per law he said. He justified the shifting of Mr Dewakar Prashad, DGP (Enforcement) from Himachal to New Delhi on deputation. He said that Mr Prashad was sent to New Delhi by the previous BJP government.

Mr Dhumal claimed that the Congress party was a house divided and the government would not last long due to its wrong policies.

Stokes: stop dumping debris on hill slopes
Tribune News Service

Shimla, April 17
Mrs Vidya Stokes, Power Minister, has expressed concern over the damage being caused to the environment due to the dumping of debris on hill slopes along the rivers at the 126 MW Larji and other hydel projects under construction and asserted that the officials responsible for the lapse would be made accountable.

Addressing a press conference here today, she said she was shocked to see that the contractors involved in the construction of the Larji project were not dumping the debris at the designated sites and were throwing it in the hills to save money. This could not be allowed as the disposal of debris in such an unscientific manner not only destroyed vegetation but also polluted the rivers.

She lamented that even soil conservation works in the catchments were not being undertaken in right earnest, though crores of rupees were being spent on the afforestation programme as part of the project. She said in order to ensure the proper utilisation of funds earmarked for new plantations in the project areas, the government proposed to involve the local people in the afforestation work. This would not only help in the proper execution of works but also provide employment to villagers.

Regarding power generation she said two units of the Nathpa Jhakri project were likely to start commercial generation by June making available 500 MW of additional power. Besides, a unit of the Larji project was also likely to be commissioned shortly.

Mrs Stokes, who also holds charge of the Science, Technology and Environment portfolio, said keeping the hills green and clean was the government’s main concern and in this regard the focus would be on resorts like Shimla, Manali, Kulu, Kangra and Dalhousie.
