gives 52 lakh for water supply scheme Jind, April 4 The Chief Minister was addressing a public meeting at Dhakal village in the district today. He also visited villages of the Kalayat Assembly constituency to redress the grievances of the people. He reiterated the commitment of his government to provide adequate water and power and ensure all basic amenities to raise the socio-economic status of the people. He said the state government had taken a number of steps to safeguard the interests of the farming community. The procurement of wheat had already started, therefore, in addition to the mandis, a large number of procurement centres had been set up for the farmers to sell their produce, he added. While announcing a Rs 52 lakh water supply scheme for Sudkan Kalan village, he directed the officers of the Public Health Department to complete it by September 25, which happens to the birthday of Devi Lal. He also announced a number of works for the village and a grant of Rs 2 lakh for constructing pavements in the village. He said desks would also be provided to students in schools. The work to construct Rs 40 lakh Sisar minor would commence soon. He gave away a cheque for Rs 10,000 to Ms Kamlesh, widow of Mr Chander Bhan, under the National Family Welfare Scheme. Mr Surender Barwala MP, Hisar, Mr Rampal Majra Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Mr Rajiv Sharma Deputy Commissioner, Mr Manjeet Singh Ahlawat SP, were also present on the occasion. Meanwhile, Mr Chautala today made it clear that the introduction of VAT would neither adversely affect the producers and traders nor the consumers, but would help in checking the leakage of the revenue. Mr Chautala, who was talking to mediapersons at Narwana yesterday evening, said the Haryana Government had introduced VAT by enacting a law, but some vested interests were misleading the people on its implementation. The Chief Minister said a meeting of Finance Ministers of various states would be convened in New Delhi on April 8 to discuss the issue. In reply to a question on elections in Rajasthan, he said the INLD being a national-level party, would contest elections in other states too including Delhi, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. When asked to comment on the on-going hunger strike by the workers of the BKU at Shahpur village in the district Mr Chautala said the state government had decided to constitute a three-member committee to redress the grievances of the farmers. The Finance Minister, Mr Sampat Singh, Members of the Parliament Mr Surender Singh Barwala and Mr Ajay Singh Chautala were the members of the committee. The committee had been authorised to negotiate with the representatives of the BKU and its decision would be acceptable to the government. |
Girls made to skip exam, welcome Chautala Kaithal, April 4 In the small pandal, a sofa and a few chairs have been placed for the CM and senior officers. Chief Parliamentary Secretary Ram Pal Mazra, Mr Amar Singh MLA and Chairman Harijan Kalyan Nigam, Mr Tejveer Singh MLA Pundri, Mr Chajju Ram Jamba and Party workers were being entertained by Public Relations Department artistes. Mr Chautala wishes villagers a Happy New Year (new Samvat) Mr Chautala remarks “Aap Logon ko BKU se chhutkara mil gaya hai. Aap Ko bijli ke bil bharne chahiyen”. Then he asks the villagers’ demands and himself talks about drinking water, orders the Deputy Commissioner to provide canal-based water to the village. Then himself talks about power and orders the SE to improve power supply, replace electric poles and old wires. He orders construction of a road in the village. Additional rooms in school, upgradation of the high secondary school from next session, metalling of road to the cremation grounds, a boundary wall and sheds, a park, repair of village chaupal and the construction of an old age home. He orders the Deputy Commissioner to provide wooden furniture in school class rooms. All this is finished over in 10 minutes. In the end Mr Chautala advises villagers to shun politics. Mr Chautala gets in his car and proceeds for the next village. Then Pinjoo Pura, Ram Garh and then to Kharak Pandava and so on. He has to cover 24 villages and the Kalayat town before the sunset. He refuses to accept money from the villagers for party fund and tells them it will be welcome in elections. Mr Chautala comes and leaves the stronghold of the BKU. There is no resentment but many BKU leaders are in jail. |
Bhajan flays govt on VAT Fatehabad, April 4 The former Chief Minister had come here to condole the death of INLD MLA, Leela Krishan Chowdhary. A former MP, Mr Ramji Lal, the HPCC secretary, Mr Ram Raj Mehta, and a local Congress leader, Mr Dhura Ram, accompanied him. Addressing mediapersons in the PWD rest house, Mr Bhajan Lal said the jail bharo andolan, which was earlier scheduled for this month, had now been postponed in view of the harvesting season. He said the fresh dates of the agitation would be decided at the meeting of party functionaries, MLAs and MPs on April 7. Mr Bhajan Lal criticised the Value Added Tax (VAT) system of taxation and said it was injustice to the traders of this state that VAT had been imposed on them while neighbouring states had deferred its
implementation. He announced that the Congress would discontinue VAT whenever it came to power. The former Chief Minister ridiculed the announcement of the ruling INLD party in Haryana to contest polls in Rajasthan. He said the party had earlier contested polls in UP on 122 seats and only one of its candidates had managed to save his security deposit. He dared the state Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, to test his popularity in Haryana itself and added that the Congress MLAs were ready to resign in case he was interested in fresh elections. Mr Bhajan Lal went to the residence of Leela Krishan Chowdhary, who died on March 27, to condole his death. |
HVP all set for byelection Fatehabad, April 4 The seat fell vacant after the death of INLD MLA Leela Krishan Chowdhary. Mr Surendra Singh was addressing mediapersons at Hinjrawan village in this district today. Mr Pahlad Singh, General Secretary of the youth wing of the HVP, and Mr Gian Chand Pruthi, president of the district unit of the party, were present. The HVP leader said during the Yamunanagar byelection, the media had underestimated the support for the HVP candidate, but the party had performed well there. Mr Surendra Singh criticised the INLD government which, he alleged, had failed at all fronts. He said law and order in the state was at its worst and incidents of looting and dacoity were being reported almost daily. He said the HVP supported the agitation of traders against the implementation of VAT. Mr Surendra Singh blamed the Congress for the delay in the construction of the SYL canal. He said that it was his father, Mr Bansi Lal, who had got a portion of the canal constructed during his tenure. The HVP leader criticised the government for ‘victimising’ BKU leader Ghasi Ram Nain. He said though his party was not in favour of free power, it supported the farmers’ agitation. The farmers had been let down by the government which first promised to waive their power bills and then backed out from its promise. |
Remand for 1 in Ambala murder case Ambala, April 4 The youths against whom the case has been registered include Mandeep, Ashwani, Sanjeev, Ajay, Sonu and Vishaw Chaudhry. One of the suspects belongs to a nearby village while the rest of them are from different local colonies. Davinder, a student of Class XII was allegedly beaten to death by six youths at Ravidass Majri. According to hospital sources, the cause of the death could be head injuries. According to police sources, one of the youth, Mandeep, son of a police official posted in Panchkula district, has been arrested. The police produced him in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr Surya Pratap Singh, who remanded him in police custody for five days. The rest of the assailants are at large. The SPs, Mr Hardeep Singh Doon, said three police teams had been sent in search of the suspects.

Internet Ambala, April 4 Giving this information, the Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Technical Education, Haryana, Mr Dharamvir, speaking at the valedictory function of the three-day inter-cultural polytechnical function at Kalpana Chawla Government Polytechnic for Women, here yesterday evening, said a policy decision to this effect had already been taken. The Principal Secretary to the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr B.D. Dhalia, said Indians by virtue of their hard work and abilities had made a place for themselves at the international level. The demand for Indian doctors, engineers and those working in the IT sector was increasing and they were being sought even in the USA and the UK. He exhorted the students to strive for perfection in their respective fields. He said there was only one polytechnic institute in the state at Nilokheri at the time of its inception, but the number had now risen to 25. He also stressed on the need to raise the standard of education and make it job-oriented. Remembering Kalpana Chawla on the occasion, he said the girl from Haryana with her hard work and ability had proved that one could achieve anything if one had the will to do so. It was indeed a befitting honour on the part of the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, to name this polytechnic after her and give her due recognition. Later, Mr Dhalia gave away the trophies to the winning institutions. In her inaugural address, Ms Shakuntla Jakhu, Commissioner and Special secretary, Technical Education, Haryana, said keeping in view the success of the festival, a decision had been taken to organise more such festivals in the near future. A similar function would be organised in Hisar from April 7 to 10. Among those present on the occasion included the Commissioner, Ambala Division, Mr Maha Singh, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr
D.D. Gautam, the SP, Mr H.S. Doon, and the ADC, Ms Neelam Pradeep
Kasni. Later, a cultural programme was also presented by the students.

HIGH COURT Chandigarh, April 4 Youth Wing’s Rashtriya Mahasahiv Kulbir Singh, Amir Singh and five others were apprehending arrest in a case registered under Sections 420, 120-B and 109 of the Indian Penal Code, besides under the provisions of the Benami Transaction Act, at Kurali police station in Ropar district. The petitioners had submitted that they were known to be close to the Chief Minister. As such a false case was fabricated to
embarrass Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala as he was known to be in good terms with Punjab’s former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. Going into the background of the case, counsel for the petitioners had submitted that the petitioners, along with five others, were agriculturist and had purchased over 201 acres in Nanglian village in Ropar district. As per newspaper reports, an inquiry was initiated against them by the Congress government as they were suspecting the transaction to be benami. The government was of the opinion that the actual purchaser was someone else, counsel had added. After hearing the arguments in the case and going through the record, the High Court fixed July 23 as the next date of hearing in the case while ordering stay on
arrest. |

leaves Rs 20 cr in FDs Karnal, April 4 Enquiries show the Directorate of Distance Education has been the major source of varsity income, under Dr L.C. Gupta, Director has 35000 students now. Statistics show that Mr Chaudhary during his tenure spent over Rs 20 crore on developing infrastructure in the varsity. He developed the Regional Centre of Kurukshetra University at Sirsa being inaugurated Chaudhary Devi Lal University by Union HRD Minister, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi on April 6. The Kurukshetra University Teachers Association gave a farewell to Mr Chaudhary where 175 members of the faculty were present, where the VC’s contribution to the university was appreciated. Mr Chaudhary said a university was known by the quality of its faculty. At the farewell party organised by the Kurukshetra University Students Association (KUSA), said Mr Chaudhary had been more father-figure than a Vice-Chancellor. Maharaja Aggarsein Postgraduate College and Maharaja Aggarsein Institute of Management and Technology also bid Mr Chaudhary a farewell. Dr Raj Kumar, Principal of the college and Adviser MAIMT, lauded Mr Chaudhary’s services. Mr Chaudhary, in his address, said the colleges had been the “backbone” of the university. Leading citizens of Jagadhri town also attended the get-together. |

trophy for Ambala eves Ambala, April 4 In the solo-song competition, Government Polytechnic, Ambala city, won the first position, the second and third positions were won by the KCGPW, Ambala city, and the GP, Nilokheri, respectively. The BPS, Khanpur, won the first position in the geet competition, the GP, Sirsa, won the second position and the HIT, Sonepat, won the third position. Students of the CR, Rohtak, won the trophy in the poetical recitation competition. The KCGPW, Ambala city, won the first position, the second and third positions were won by the GP, Sirsa, and the CR, Rohtak, respectively. In the skit competition, the
VTI, Rohtak, bagged the trophy. The team of this college also won the first position, the second and third positions were won by the
SJP, Damla, and the GPW, Faridabad, respectively. In the group-dance competition, students of the
KCGPW, Ambala city, won the first position, while the VTI, Rohtak, and the HIT, Sonepat, jointly shared the second position and the
BPSMP, Khanpur, won the third position. |
Protect
crops from aphid: HAU Hisar, April 4 According to Dr P.R. Yadav, Professor, Entomology Department, HAU, farmers and extension agencies in various parts of the state have observed aphid attack on wheat and barley crops in recent days. The scientists have urged the farmers to spray 250 ml Fenitrothion or 400 ml Malathion or 500 ml Endosulfan in 250 litre of water per acre.
