Slum women, children to get better healthcare

The municipal corporation here will provide healthcare facilities to women and children in the slum areas under the “Urban Reproductive and Child Health Project ”, mooted by the state government in a bid to strengthen the medical and health infrastructure in the urban areas.

Land grab: bail plea dismissed

Mr H.S. Madan, Additional Sessions Judge, here has dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of Bhupinder Singh, accused of attempting to grab land of the Decent Neighbour Co-operative House Building Society by allegedly committing forgery and cheating, in connivance with officials of the Co-operative Department.

Attack on Iraq crime against humanity
Ludhiana, March 21
The Punjab State Committee of Marxist Communist Party of India (MCPI) has condemned the US-led attack on Iraq. At a meeting of the party, presided over by Mr Gurdev Singh Sarabha, party activists said that the US imperialism and its allies, had no respect for the UN and majority of the democratic world opinion.

MC man held on graft charge
Ludhiana, March 21
The Ludhiana Vigilance Bureau today caught a head draftsman of the local municipal corporation and a Patwari posted at Ropar under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Mr Kanwarjit Singh Sidhu, SSP, Ludhiana Vigilance Bureau, said here today that a vigilance team nabbed head draftsman Avtar Singh Bhatti while accepting a bribe of Rs 12,000 from a complainant. 

Tumour removed 
Ludhiana, March 21
An endoscopic surgery was recently employed to remove a hidden tumour of the cheek at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital by Dr Manish Munjal, Reader, Department of ENT. Such tumours are generally removed through risky conventional methods as they cannot be seen with naked eyes.

‘Include eggs’ in mid-day meal scheme
Ludhiana, March 21
Facing problems of survival poultry farmers in the state have devised a novel method to remain in business. They are demanding from the government that under the mid-day meal scheme being run in government schools the students should be given eggs instead of other edibles.

Meetings for Alamgir conclave
Sahnewal, March 21
In a run-up to the Alamgir conclave on April 2 Shromani Akali Dal (Badal) workers assembled at Gurdwara Reru Sahib, Nandpur, near here, yesterday. Similar gatherings have been organised at Payal and Jagraon, Dehlon and Koomkalan. The gatherings were organised by the president of the Youth Akali Dal, Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon.

Hike in raw material prices flayed

The Federation of Tiny and Small Industries of India (FTSII) has condemned the hike in the prices of basic raw material for engineering industries, alleging that the manipulative tactics of major producers of steel were to blame for it.

3 PAU dept heads appointed
Ludhiana, March 21
The Board of Management of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), at a meeting held in Chandigarh today, appointed three heads of departments.
Dr Jageer Singh Sidhu has been appointed Head of the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology. Dr Ranbir Singh will take over as Head of the Department of Extension Education. Dr G.S. Padda has been appointed as Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.

Farewell function 
Ludhiana, March 21
Little Angels Playway and Public School held its farewell function ‘Bye Bye 2003’ yesterday. Mrs Sandhaya Johri, Principal of the school, crowned best little angels of the school for the session. Award for ‘‘Best Little Angel - 2003’’ were given to Suryansh and Ruhi, while crown of ‘Angel Pride’ was given to Vani Gupta, ‘Angel Cute’ was declared Aayush Jain, ‘Angel Smar’ was Manraj and ‘Angel Glory’ was given to Anmol Singh. Thereafter students were given lunch from the school.

Nominations filed for DMCH governing body
Ludhiana, March 21
Nominations for the election of the office-bearers and members of the governing body of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital were filed on Wednesday. For the first time in the history of DMCH, the elections of the office-bearers would be held through a secret ballot, giving an indication of strong differences among the members.

Ludhiana, March 21
The Department of Medicine, Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), organised a Continuing Medical Education (CME) Programme on oncology on the hospital premises here today.
