Hamirpur BJP blasts Shanta for party’s defeat Tounidevi (Hamirpur), March 21 Mr O.P. Kohli, general secretary of the party, was the chief guest on the occasion. Former Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, Mr Suresh Chandel and Mr Suresh Bhardwaj, MPs, also attended the meeting, chaired by Mr Baldev Sharma, MLA. Others who attended today’s meeting included Mr Ishwar Dass Dhiman, MLA, Ms Urmila Thakur and Babu Ram Mandyal, MLAs. Though mediapersons were not allowed entry inside the venue yet the speeches of the workers could be heard on the public address system. Party activists blasted the union minister for harming the cause of the nation by supporting the ‘Mittar Milan’ activists, who became dissidents and opposed the official party nominees on three out of five seats in the district. They also demanded action against Mr Shanta Kumar for helping anti-party elements during the elections. The situation
become tense when the activists also levelled allegations of indiscipline against Mr Suresh Chandel, MP. Ms Urmila Thakur and Mr Babu Ram Mandyal, who lost election from Hamirpur and Nadaun Assembly seats, made a dig at the party dissidents for their defeat. They said that had timely action been taken to curb the dissidents, the party would have not lost the elections. Mr Dhumal defended the allotment of party tickets and said rebellion by a section of party in the name of ‘Mittar Milan’ and the nexus with the Congress led to party’s defeat. Mr Dhumal said the main aim of his government was to develop all areas and he had acted accordingly. He asked workers not to be disheartened by the defeat and go to the masses to explain the party’s view point to them. He justified the opening of the office of the HP Subordinate Selection Board at Hamirpur and jobs given to the people of the district. Mr Dhumal said a number of party leaders and workers were not supportive and played a negative role to harm the cause of the party. Mr Kohli exhorted the workers not to take the defeat seriously and work for the strenthening of the party. However, he said dissidence would not be tolerated as already clarified by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani. Meanwhile, the party’s in charge for Himachal Pradesh, Mr Kohli, said today that the decision to take an action against Mr Shanta Kumar was the prerogative of the high command. Talking to reporters at Tounidevi this evening, he said dissidence was one of the main reason for the party’s debacle in the elections. The party was introspecting on this issue and after meetings with workers, a final strategy would be evolved, he added. He, however, said the party would not tolerate indiscipline at any cost and those approaching the media to air their grievances would be shunted out immediately. Mr Kohli claimed the party had not lost ground in the state and the party cadre had decided to work unitedly in the forthcoming elections and form BJP government at the Centre. Talking about today’s meeting, he said the feelings of party workers would be conveyed to leaders and action taken accordingly. About the anti-corruption drive of the Congress in the state, he said the Congress government was sidetracking the issue of development. |
End bias
against women: Governor Shimla, March 21 Speaking at the national seminar on “Women at Work Place: Canada and India” organised by the Centre for Canadian Studies Development Programme at the Himachal Pradesh University, here today, he said there was need to change the mindset of the society as a whole, particularly the men, and they must be sensitised on the gender equality. He said there were a number of laws to ensure equal rights and welfare of the women but these needed effective implementation. Besides, awareness should be created among women about their rights and this could be achieved by organising camps in rural areas. He lamented that in certain scriptures women had been termed as inferior beings, which was highly objectionable. Such derogatory references should be deleted. Dr Bhan said that reservation for women in Panchayati Raj Institutions had definitely helped in their empowerment. However, he cautioned against proxy governance by men, as was the case in certain democratic bodies in which reservation had been provided to women. He expressed hope that the Bill to grant reservation to women in Parliament and State Assemblies would be passed this year. He called upon men to support women in their quest to excel. Dr S.D. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, in his presidential remarks said a comparative study of the Indian and Canadian society would enable us to understand better the position of women in modern India. He called for removing the gender bias from the society altogether. Mr Reid Cooper, secretary, Public Affairs in the Canadian High Commission, said there was great potential for collaboration between India and Canada as both countries were multi-cultural states. |

B.Ed. students in fix over exam
dates Solan, march 21 The university held the common entrance test for admission to B.Ed colleges in May and declared the results in the first week of June last year. But the university took a long time to grant affiliation to the
private colleges in the state. Admissions in the two government colleges one at Dharamsala and another at Shimla were completed in September and their sessions began early. Seven private colleges started sessions in mid October. This included Poanta Sahib, Nalagarh, Solan, Sundernagar, Batoli, in Una district. Hamirpur and Tarakwadi also in Hamirpur district. The university cleared affiliation of another four colleges in December and three of the four colleges started session late — in mid December last year while a private college in Shimla began session in mid October. Delay in starting the session has put pressure on the students and teachers. They will manage to complete the mandatory 180 days in the first week of April. Leaving them with no preparatory leave if the examinations begin from April 10 as is the case of another postgraduate classes rued the students. The students of colleges which began session in December are more worried as they can neither complete the syllabus nor the mandatory 180 teaching days. These colleges are Boghna Hurla in Kulu disrict, Gangath in Kangra district and Kotla Khurd in Una district. Controller of Examinations, HP University K.P. Dogar when asked about the examination dates of the B.Ed students stated that a decision would be taken by Monday or Tuesday next week. He did not say anything on the non- completion of the mandatory 180 teaching days. Apprehensive of the session being extended by delaying the examinations the students lamented the delay in beginning the session. They complained that had the university granted affiliation to all colleges on time it would have given them more choice. At present the students from far-flung places like Hamirpur, Una and Sundernagar had to join private colleges in Shimla and Nalagarh. The delay also had forced the students to shell out Rs 12,000 Rs 13,000 more seeking admission via non-subsidised seats.
