3 PAU dept heads appointed

The Board of Management of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), at a meeting held in Chandigarh today, appointed three heads of departments. Dr Jageer Singh Sidhu has been appointed Head of the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology. Dr Ranbir Singh will take over as Head of the Department of Extension Education. Dr G.S. Padda has been appointed as Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.

Giving details of the university budget, Dr V.K. Sharma, Registrar, said budget estimates of Rs 150.6 crore had been approved against an amount of Rs 144.24 crore last year. Of this amount, 53.07 per cent would go for research purposes, 26.75 per cent for teaching, 9.70 per cent for extension activities and 10.4 per cent for general activities, he said.

For the annual expenses, the state government would provide Rs 113 crore plus Rs 4 crore for the planned schemes, Dr Sharma said. He said an amount of about Rs 21 crore would come from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Schemes of the Centre would fetch an amount of Rs 2.18 crore. An amount of Rs 7.25 crore would come from the revolving fund scheme, Rs 2.15 crore from miscellaneous schemes and Rs 0.058 crore from the PL 480 schemes. The last year’s deficit of Rs 18.9 crore has been reduced to 16.15 crore this year, he said.

Like every year, the fee of students in all streams in the general category has been increased by 10 per cent while no hike has been imposed for NRI students. Dr Sharma said the monthly fellowships and stipends had been increased by 20 per cent. Thus a PhD students would now get a fellowship of Rs 1500 to Rs 1800 and a stipend of Rs 400 to Rs 500. Fellowships for MSc students will now be from Rs 100 to Rs 1300, whereas undergraduate students would get Rs 300 to Rs 350.

Dr Sharma also said the board had decided to appoint a new Controller of Examinations on the pattern of selection of the Coordinator of Research in various colleges. The post is presently being held as additional charge by Dr G.S. Chahal from the Department of Plant Breeding.

Farewell function

Ludhiana, March 21
Little Angels Playway and Public School held its farewell function ‘Bye Bye 2003’ yesterday. Mrs Sandhaya Johri, Principal of the school, crowned best little angels of the school for the session.

Award for ‘‘Best Little Angel - 2003’’ were given to Suryansh and Ruhi, while crown of ‘Angel Pride’ was given to Vani Gupta, ‘Angel Cute’ was declared Aayush Jain, ‘Angel Smar’ was Manraj and ‘Angel Glory’ was given to Anmol Singh. Thereafter students were given lunch from the school.

Mr Sanjeev Johri, director of the school, gave away the prizes to the students and distributed sweets. On the occasion students danced to the popular Hindi and Punjabi songs.
