3 hurt in police lathi charge on farmers Shahabad (Kurukshetra),
October 15 The BKU activists had been sitting in dharna outside the police station here for the past five days to protest against the alleged irregularities in the election of a director of the Shahabad Cooperative Sugar Mill on October 11. Mr Chautala was scheduled to preside over a “Sarkar Aapke Dwar” function here today. The BKU had announced to burn the Chief Minister’s effigy outside the police station. In view of the BKU threat, the administration had made heavy police arrangements here today and Section 144,
CrPC, had been invoked. The police station, venue of the BKU agitation, is hardly 500 metres from the PWD rest house, the venue of the Chief Minister’s function. Around 11 a.m., 16 tractor-trailers carrying BKU activists reached the police station. While four tractor-trailers carried women, two were carrying children. Suddenly a car stopped outside the police station. The president of the district unit of the BKU, Mr Gurnam Singh, who had contested the election but lost, came out of the car dressed as a Nihang along with a few BKU workers. In commando-like action, they placed an effigy on the GT Road and burnt it. The highway was blocked. The action obviously embarrassed the administration. BKU activists were dancing round the burning effigy. After that the police was at its “caning best”. Even women and children were not spared by the police. A senior police officer was seen personally beating up a child. When his father tried to intervene, the police officer beat him up also. The BKU activists were bundled into six Haryana Roadways buses and taken away to an undisclosed place. Vehicles belonging to the BKU were impounded. These included the jeep of Mr Gurnam Singh. The lathi charge has evoked widespread condemnation. Former Congress MP and former Speaker of the Haryana Assembly Tara Singh said the brutal lathi charge on women and children on Dasehra was condemnable. |
