Radiographers getting a raw deal
Megha Manchanda

New Delhi, September 23
When we talk of radiation, the first and foremost thing that comes to our mind is protection from radiation. The topic of radiation protection has continued to draw attention every now and then. Looking at the scenario in the Radiology Department of various hospitals, one gets a clear indication that their job is no less than a health hazard.

According to experts, the effects of radiation are cumulative and irreversible. These include both somatic and genetic effect, like leukemia {blood cancer}, diminished resistance to infections, epilation of hair and other cancer (due to overdose of radiation), miscarriage in women, sterility, chromosomal malformation, which affects the future generation of the person exposed to over-radiation. “Safety devices are not up to the mark” is the general statement passed by people working in the Radiology Department in various hospitals.

Even the mandatory precautions are not observed. For example, aprons, and gloves of lead rubber, fluoroscopy and lead rubber flaps for horizontal fluoroscopy are a must, but nothing at all has been done in this direction. Also, the space provided for machines in Diagnostic Radiology is not in proportion to the radiation and further adds to the list of risk factors.

Radiographers in India as compared to their counterparts in the USA and other developed countries are more prone to risk as a radiographer there is supposed to take 40 radiographs (X-rays) in a single day, while here in India one has to make 200 exposures a day, which is five times more. Also, there is a fixed radiation allowance along with a compulsory radiation leave given to the radiographers in the USA. However, such is not the case in India. Paradoxically, radiations are a means to cure cancer but only if they are used in a right manner, several radiologists working in the government hospitals here said.

People working in these conditions blame lack of awareness for this state of affairs. Public awareness about the hazards of radiation should be brought about by distributing pamphlets and also as instructions in the local language at the bottom of the prescription slips and near X-ray rooms. Unnecessary entry of the public into the radiation area should be prohibited. Further, the hazards of radiation should be frequently displayed and made to reach people via media like newspaper, radio, TV and the Internet.

Primary physicians can help curb diabetes
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 23
Diabetes has acquired itself a place in every other home in the country, thanks to the food habits and the lack of physical exercise coupled with lack of knowledge about the disease.

The disease is threatening to grow in considerable proportions.

According to the Delhi Diabetic Research Centre, the disease is turning into epidemic proportions.

To curb this dangerous phenomenon, the society is organising a three-day Diabetes Fair from the 27th to the 29th of this month where experts from various fields would disseminate information about diabetes and methods to cure it.

The society also points out that primary physicians can play an important role in curbing the disease.

Headed by the president of the society, Dr. A K Jhingan, the three-day fair will train general practitioners in diagnosing diabetes patients.

It was pointed out that most of the patients go to general practitioners in the initial stages. In his statement Dr Jhingan said that the change in food habits and a sedentary lifestyle are the main causes of the diabetes and that there are a number of complications, which can be prevented if diabetes is detected at an early stage.

This he added also goes on to save a lot of money on treatment later.
