Das (250) puts Indians in command Chelmsford, August 15 Das was the last man to be dismissed as the Indians were all out for 516 at the stroke of tea. The Orissa player narrowly failed to beat Poly Umrigar’s 252 against Cambridge University in 1959, the best by an Indian batsman on English soil. Indians, who resumed at their overnight score of 331 for six today, maintained a blistering pace and the first hour saw 92 runs scored, 65 of them by captain Saurav Ganguly. In all, Indians smashed 185 runs in 39 overs today. Das hit 32 fours and four sixes in his marathon innings, lasting 380 balls, which has virtually clinched him a berth in Headingley Test. The effort was also three short his career best first class score of 253 scored for Orissa last season against Bengal. Ganguly was in an attacking mood and laid his bat at everything hurled at him by the Essex bowlers. He smashed 74 runs off 57 balls with 10 fours and two sixes. Das, unbeaten on 165 yesterday, meanwhile reached his double hundred 35 minutes before lunch after batting for 480 minutes and facing 346 balls. His double ton contained 29 fours and three sixes. Das, for a brief while, also showed aggression when he lofted off-spinner James Middlebrook for two successive sixes to move from 178 to 190. issue: deadlock continues
London, August 15 With just 24 hours left for tomorrow’s deadline for cricket boards to sign the mandatory participating nations agreement for next month’s Champions Trophy, ICC spokesman Mark Harrison said a solution was expected only by next week. “We are in touch with the member Boards and also the players’ associations. We are hopeful that a solution will emerge by next week,” Mr Harisson told PTI here. The controversial agreement, which has threatened to jeopardise the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka and the World Cup in South Africa in six months time, contains a players’ terms form, a clause of which requires the cricketers to forego their individual endorsements one month before and after the tournaments in case of a clash of interests with the ICC’s official sponsors. Even as New Zealand and West Indies said their cricketers will sign the form, the Indian cricket board was still working on a solution to ensure the participation of its star cricketers in the Champions Trophy.

Woods goes for unprecedented ‘US Slam’
Chaska (Minnesota), August 15 Woods and Ben Hogan are already the only players to win three majors in the same year, but Woods lost the Masters in his epic 2000 run and Hogan was unable to play in the 1953 PGA after winning the British Open because event schedules conflicted. Masters and US Open champion Woods, the first man in 30 years to achieve that double, lost his bid for the calendar-year Grand Slam with a career-worst 81 in the stormy third round of last month’s British Open. But Woods does not lack for motivation. The 26-year old superstar could capture his ninth major title, halfway to Jack Nicklaus’ all-time record, and capture his third PGA crown in four years with a triumph here at Hazeltine National Golf Club. “I have had a great year,” Woods said. “Any time you can win one major in a year it’s going to be a successful year. Winning two in one year has been even better. I would like to make it three.” Woods, who has won seven of the past 12 majors, admitted there is a let-down in the PGA atmosphere - even with a majors record 98 of the world’s 100 top-ranked on hand -because so many fans hoped he would be going for the Grand Slam. Many fans who discovered golf with Woods lack the historic perspective on winning majors — a hard feat Tiger makes look easy. “It’s unbelievably difficult. It’s the toughest conditions, the best players, in the world,” Woods said. “It’s tough. It really is tough.” Just ask Woods’ playing partners in today’s opening round — British Open champion Ernie Els of South Africa and defending champion David Toms. “Give me a bigger set of blinders because there are going to be a lot of things going on, a lot of people out there,” Toms said. “We’ve got a great pairing. I’m excited. I enjoy watching great golf and I think I’m going to see a lot of that. It will give me something to shoot for.” A victory here by two-time US Open winner Els would leave only the Masters among unclaimed major crowns for the man nicknamed “Big Easy”. “The next level, for me, would be to try and win as many majors as I can,” Els said. “I’m trying to win all four at least once. That’s my ultimate goal. I guess that’s the next level, to really compete in the next five or six years of majors.” Thunderstorms are forecast from late in the day through Sunday. “I’m hoping to get a little rain to soften these greens because it’s going to be very difficult to try to stop the ball anywhere around the hole,” Toms said. The PGA has been the first major win for such players as Toms, Vijay Singh, John Daly, Davis Love, Paul Azinger, Nick Price. “I think it’s just a numbers game,” Toms said. “The courses the PGA of America selects and the way they set them up opens the field to a lot of players. From time to time there’s going to be somebody that will sneak in there and win one.” Spain’s Sergio Garcia and American Phil Mickelson are among those trying to break through for their first major title at an event. “I feel like I should have (won a major),” Garcia said. “But it’s not only about playing well. Everything has to be there. You have to get a good break at the right moment. I don’t feel I’ve had that week at a major. But I’m still waiting for it.” Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, like Garcia, has three top-10 finishes in majors this year but has yet to win his first. “You have not seen anything yet,” Harrington said. “I believe I can improve every part of my game.” Mickelson has become tired of his status as the best player never to win a major after 41 prior attempts. “There’s a very simple resolution,” he said. “I know how to fix it. I’m trying to resolve that. “For now, it’s something I just need to accept until I am finally able to break through and win and it’s OK.” Sweden’s Jesper Parnevik, 37, feels the pressure of not having won a major with every season that passes. “I know I’m getting older every year,” he said. “At the same time, I hope I’m getting a little wiser.” The course’s most unique holes are the 402-yard, par-4 16th and the 636-yard par-5 third hole, a monster among the longest in major golf history. “I don’t think even Tiger is going to be hitting that one in two,” Garcia said. The 16th features Lake Hazeltine to the right with winds pushing shots toward a creek on the left and making approaches to a peninsula green treacherous. “That’s going to be the deciding hole,” local favourite Tim Herron said. “A lot of disaster can happen on that hole. The No 1 objective is to take the front water out of play. Then you work the hole from there.” “Sixteen is the only hole that you really feel the full effects of the wind,” Mickelson said. “It’s a very difficult two shots because the wind is strongest right there.”

Dokic, Capriati advance
Montreal, August 15 Number 4 seed Kim Clijsters, of Belgium, also got past Nicole Pratt of Austria 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 at the $ 1.2 million hard-court event. Jennifer Capriati, the second seed, beat fellow American qualifier Sarah Taylor 6-4, 6-1 but unseeded Russian Anna Kournikova was not as fortunate in her 5-7, 1-6 setback against Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual. Kournikova and Ruano Pascual were forced to wait out a rain delay, with the Spaniard leading 5-1 in the second set. Despite an injury-filled year, the 19-year-old Dokic won titles at Sarasota and Birmingham, England, where she dropped just one set. Dokic, who is considering a move to England because of problems in her native Yugoslavia, also reached the final at the Paris Indoor event, but defaulted to American Venus Williams due to a right thigh strain.
The same injury forced her to retire at Antwerp and to withdraw from Memphis and Scottsdale. A stomach virus forced her out in the semifinal at Amelia Island and the thigh injury sidelined her in the semifinal at Hamburg. She was booed last week in Los Angeles after all but giving up midway through a straight set loss to American Chanda Rubin. Rubin, fresh off her victory over Lindsay Davenport in the Los Angeles final, was one of four upset victims, falling to Austria’s Barbara Schett, 4-6, 4-6. While the 29-year-old Pratt is still seeking her first career WTA title, Clijsters already has seven championships at the age of 19, including Hamburg in May when she rallied to beat former world No 1 Venus Williams. The American got her revenge at the end of July when she won in straight sets at Stanford. Fifth seed Justine Henin advanced when Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia retired in the third set. Henin was leading 5-7 6-0, 4-1, when Nagyova retired. No 8 Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia advanced with a 6-3 7-6 (7/3) victory over Patty Schnyder of Switzerland. AFP |
Punjab football league under new format Chandigarh, August 15 Earlier, the super league was allotted to one district football association and action was confined to that district alone. The event passed off usually unnoticed. However, according to Arjuna awardee Inder Singh, who is also the secretary of the Punjab Football Association, the home-and-away concept on the lines of the National Football League has been introduced with effect from the current edition. Accordingly, action involving the top clubs of the state will now be spread to four cities — Jalandhar, Phagwara, Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala. The participating
clubs, namely JCT Phagwara, Punjab Police, Jalandhar, Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, Punjab State Electricity Board, Hoshiarpur, and Border Security Force, Jalandhar, will now be playing each other once on home ground and then on the opposing team’s ground as per the fixtures finalised by the super league committee. Arjuna awardee Gurdev Singh Gill, who incidentally is also the sports secretary of Punjab Police, and Mr Sham Kumar, Joint Director(Sports), BSF, have been nominated project directors. All the five clubs are well known in football circles. JCT, Punjab Police and Border Security Force have played in the National Football League previously though only JCT continue to retain their slot in the NFL. The other two, namely PSEB and RCF, also have an impressive track record. PSEB, who once boasted of stalwarts like the late Manjit Singh, have figured in the finals of prestigious tournaments like the Durand Cup. The 16th Punjab State Super League, which kicked off on August 10, is being played at five venues with two being in Jalandhar alone as two teams, Punjab Police and BSF, are stationed there. While Punjab Police will be playing their home matches at the PAP Stadium, BSF have opted for Guru Gobind Singh Stadium as the venue for their home ties. The other venues are JCT Stadium Phagwara, PSEB ground, Hoshiarpur, and RCF Stadium, Kapurthala. The kick-off time is 4.30 p.m. Till today six matches have been played. In the inaugural match, Punjab Police beat RCF 1-0. The other results are: BSF beat PSEB 2-1; JCT beat Punjab Police 1-0; BSF beat RCF 1-0; JCT beat PSEB 4-2. Today, Border Security Force and Punjab Police played a goal-less draw at Jalandhar’s Guru Gobind Singh Stadium. Tomorrow, JCT meet RCF at Phagwara. The league will conclude on September 1. The fixtures: August 16, 2002 - JCT vs RCF (Phagwara); August 17 - Punjab Police vs PSEB (Jalandhar); August 18 - BSF vs JCT (Jalandhar); August 19 - RCF vs PSEB (Kapurthala); August 21 - RCF vs Punjab Police (Kapurthala); August 22 - BSF vs PSEB (Jalandhar); august 23 - Punjab Police vs JCT (Jalandhar); August 24 - BSF vs RCF (Jalandhar); August 25 - JCT vs PSEB (Phagwara); August 26 - Punjab Police vs BSF (Jalandhar); August 28 - PSEB vs Punjab Police (Hoshiarpur); August 29 - RCF vs JCT (Kapurthala); August 31 - PSEB vs RCF (Hoshiarpur) and September 1 - JCT vs BSF (Phagwara). |

United beaten
Paris, August 15 Twenty-one-year old substitute Bela Koplarovics, who had only been on the pitch for seven minutes, struck the decisive goal in the first minute of injury time when he converted a low cross from Tamas Szamosi past Roy Carroll from close range. But it will be United substitute Phil Neville who will have to take a huge share of the blame after letting a right wing cross sail over his head which allowed Szamosi to break clear. To make matters worse, United, playing without injured £ 30 million Rio Ferdinand, lost defender Wes Brown with an ankle injury after just five minutes and Neville took his place. United boss Alex Ferguson admitted that the defeat was a real setback. “It was a shock result,” Ferguson told BBC TV. “They didn’t have a kick in the second half and only one attack on goal. But we only have ourselves to blame because we created lots of chances. “They changed their system, but that’s the only thing. They played five at the back and allowed us all the possession. But we should break that down, we’ve played against that many times.” The United manager, who now must hope that his team can overcome the deficit in the second leg, also said the injury to Brown was also causing concern. “It’s an ankle injury and it looks bad — he will have a scan on Thursday,” said Ferguson who then went on to criticise the pitch as well as the referee. “The pitch was very bumpy and it meant that it didn’t help our passing game. I also hope that we have a better referee for the next game,” added the United manager who saw both Ruud Van Nistelrooy and David Beckham booked as well as a Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘goal’ ruled out for offside in the second half. Elsewhere, AC Milan did their best to join United in the dunces’ corner. The Italians needed a 68th minute goal from Filippo Inzaghi to scrape a 1-0 win against Slovan Liberec. But the goal was a fortunate one with Czech keeper Zbyner Hauzr making a mess of a shot from Brazilian Serginho which allowed Inzhagi to strike his 34th career European goal. Bayern Munich came away from Yugoslavia with a 3-0 win against Partizan Belgrade 3-0, with goals from Michael Tarnat, Jens Jeremies and Peruvian international Claudio Pizarro.

Women lifters sore Patiala, August 15 While P. Sunaina and P. Mangaraj have been promoted as Sub-Inspectors from the rank of Head Constable, others including Kunjarani Devi, Sanamacha Chanu, Pratima Kumari and N. Laxmi are still awaiting their promotion orders. While Kunjarani and Sanamacha Chanu won three gold each, Pratima Kumari bagged two gold and a silver and N. Laxmi garnered three silver medals. The reason cited by the CRPF authorities is that the Director-General of CRPF is competent to promote a sportsperson till the rank of an Inspector while promotions from Inspector onwards are dealt by the Home Ministry. All lifters employed with the CRPF met the Union Home Minister, Mr L.K. Advani at New Delhi immediately on their return from Manchester who promised to look into their cases on priority basis. However, despite the assurance by the Home Minister, nothing has been done by the authorities concerned for the four lifters while promotion orders have already been received by P. Mangaraj and P. Sunaina. |
