The Haryana Government has fixed a target of generating 3000 mw more power in the next three years to make the state a power-rich state. This was announced by Mr Om Prakash Chautala, Chief Minister, after inaugurating a Rs 25-crore 220 kv substation at Jorian near here today.

The Haryana police today announced a reward for its party, which had killed dreaded gang leader, Rajesh in an encounter and nabbed other members of his gang near Pehowa in Kaithal district last evening.

HVPN asked to refund fine
Fatehabad, August 9
The District Consumer Forum has imposed a fine of Rs 500 on HVPN authorities for their failure to provide services to a villager Mr Mainpal, a resident of Matana village in the district had complained to the Forum that Mr Dalbir Singh and Mr Karam Chand, two officials of the HVPN, inspected his electric meter and imposed a fine of Rs 13,829 on a plea that the seal of his meter had been tempered with.

Annual income limit up for free legal aid
Chandigarh, August 9
In Haryana, free legal aid will now be provided to those having an annual income up to Rs 30,000 instead of Rs 25,000 earlier, Mr R.S. Virk, member-secretary of Haryana State Legal Services Authority, said here today.

Economics lecturers resent KU decision
Ambala, August 9
Lecturers of economics and mathematics of various colleges affiliated to Kurukshetra University expressed concern over the decision of the university that only commerce lecturers would be eligible to teach the money and banking and business statistics subjects in future.

The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam has selected 242 villages of Faridabad, Gurgaon, Rewari, Mahendragarh, Bhiwani and Hisar districts for organising camps to give on-the-spot domestic and non-domestic connections under the sixth phase of the campaign to provide connections at the door-step of rural people.

Jan Shatabadi to start in September

The much-awaited Jan Shatabadi between Chandigarh and New Delhi is likely to start next month.
A railway official said although the necessary orders with regard to the running of the train is yet to be received, the possibility of the train having its maiden run next month cannot be ruled out.

X-ray machine donated
Ambala, August 9
A mobile X-ray machine was today dedicated to the people for the cause of TB eradication at a camp held by the Rotary Club of Ambala today.
The TB detection and eradication camp is in cooperation with the club of New York, the district administration and the Health Department.

Jawan cremated
Ambala, August 9
BSF Head Constable Gian Chand, who was killed in the valley, was cremated in his native village, near here, today. The cremation took place at Khanpur Rajputana village.

Life-term for murder accused
Ambala, August 9
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Ambala, Ms Anita Chaudhary, yesterday sentenced a murder accused Sarvjit Singh, to life imprisonment. The Superintendent of Police, Ambala, Mr Manoj Yadava, said a case was registered in Ambala City on the complaint of Mr Jitender Kumar that a woman Swaran Kaur was staying in his house whose husband had gone to England after retiring from the Railway Police.

Goods worth lakhs gutted
Ambala, August 9
A major fire broke out in a godown at Ambala City tonight.
The fire broke out at about 11 p.m. in a godown near Bans Bazar on Shuklakund road. The fire then spread to an adjoining godown. While one godown was stocked with foam mattresses, the other stocked bamboo.

CM opens substation

Yamunanagar, August 9
The Haryana Government has fixed a target of generating 3000 mw more power in the next three years to make the state a power-rich state. This was announced by Mr Om Prakash Chautala, Chief Minister, after inaugurating a Rs 25-crore 220 kv substation at Jorian near here today. With the commissioning of the substation Jagadhari, Mustafabad, Basantpura, Jathlana, Ladwa, Govindpuri, Sadhaura towns and 654 villages would be benefited.

While referring to the power generating project he said Mr Suresh P. Prabhu, Union Minister for Power, would lay the foundation stone of seventh and eighth units of 250 mw each at Tau Devi Lal Thermal Power Station, Panipat, on August 17. Mr Chautala further stated that the renovation work of the 110 mw second unit at the thermal plant, Panipat, has been assigned to Ms Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd.

He said the construction of the Yamunanagar thermal power station would be started with the financial assistance from the Government of India.

Saini, Mr Balwant Singh and Mr Kanwarpal Singh, MLAs, Mrs Meenaxi Anand Chaudhry, Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary and Chairperson, Haryana Power Utilities, Mr Samir Mathur, MD, HVPN, Mr Tarun Bajaj, MD, UHBVN, Mr Vijayender Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, and Mr M.S. Ahlawat, SP, were also present on the occasion.

Haryana police kills gangster Rajesh

Chandigarh, August 9
The Haryana police today announced a reward for its party, which had killed dreaded gang leader, Rajesh in an encounter and nabbed other members of his gang near Pehowa in Kaithal district last evening.

Three country-made pistols along with cartridges were recovered from them.

Mr M.S. Malik, DGP, lauded Mr Badan Singh, Inspector, who despite being seriously injured, had shown exemplary courage during the encounter.

Mr Malik said he had directed Mr Resham Singh, IG (Rohtak range), to suitably reward the police party for showing exemplary bravery in arresting members of the dreaded gang.

He said the Rajesh gang was involved in about 24 heinous crimes, including murders, abductions and robberies in Panipat, Rohtak, Sonipat and Hisar districts. UNI

HVPN asked to refund fine

The District Consumer Forum has imposed a fine of Rs 500 on HVPN authorities for their failure to provide services to a villager Mr Mainpal, a resident of Matana village in the district had complained to the Forum that Mr Dalbir Singh and Mr Karam Chand, two officials of the HVPN, inspected his electric meter and imposed a fine of Rs 13,829 on a plea that the seal of his meter had been tempered with. Mr Mainpal appealed to the authorities against the imposition of fine but they threatened to disconnect his power connection. Mr Mainpal remitted the fine and sent a legal notice to the HVPN authorities. But the authorities failed to pay heed to the legal notice. Upon this the complainant approached the District Consumer Forum.

The forum chairman Mr P.C. Gupta and the members Mr B.S. Dandiwal and Ms Seema Saraf, rejected the pleas of the HVPN authorities and asked them to refund the fine paid by the consumer with 12 per cent interest thereupon. The Forum also asked the authorities to pay a fine of Rs 500 to the consumer.

Annual income limit up for free legal aid

In Haryana, free legal aid will now be provided to those having an annual income up to Rs 30,000 instead of Rs 25,000 earlier, Mr R.S. Virk, member-secretary of Haryana State Legal Services Authority, said here today.

Mr Virk said legal aid could also be provided to a person with disability as defined in clause (i) of section 2 of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Protection) Act, 1995.

The government had inserted a clause in the Haryana State Legal Services Authority Rules, 1996, according to which, a person seeking legal services would be required to execute an agreement in the form wherein he would undertake for the refund or recovery, in suitable cases, of such portion of the costs or charges which might have been borne by the State Legal Services Authority, High Court Legal Services Committee, District Legal Services Authority and the sub-divisional leval services committee.

Economics lecturers resent KU decision

Lecturers of economics and mathematics of various colleges affiliated to Kurukshetra University expressed concern over the decision of the university that only commerce lecturers would be eligible to teach the money and banking and business statistics subjects in future. Earlier, economics and mathematics teachers used to teach these subjects. The university has sent a circular to all colleges in this regard.

The lecturers concerned of S.A. Jain College, Ambala City, in a memorandum, recommended by the Principal of the college, sent to the Vice-Chancellor have started, “The decision of the university is only to crush the interest of the teachers of the Economics Department in the affiliated colleges with the intention of rendering them surplus and harm their interests. Similarly in B.Com I, paper IV business economics and B.Com III, Indian economics development and policy are to be taught preferably by the commerce teachers. Thus this circular in favour of the commerce teachers and interest of against the Economics teachers.”

The memorandum also mentioned that the teachers economics were better qualified and skilled. The university had already granted approval to these teachers to teach the above subjects. Most of the teachers of this department had been teaching these subjects for the past two decades. Moreover, the UGC and university calendar do not debar these teachers to teach the above subjects.

The Head of the Department of Economics, Dr S.C. Aggarwal, has in the memorandum, urged Vice-Chancellor of the university to withdraw the circular No. ACS-IV/2002/2257-374 dated August 8,2002) as it would render the staff of the Economics Department surplus.

On-the-spot power connections

The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has selected 242 villages of Faridabad, Gurgaon, Rewari, Mahendragarh, Bhiwani and Hisar districts for organising camps to give on-the-spot domestic and non-domestic connections under the sixth phase of the campaign to provide connections at the door-step of rural people. The sixth phase of the campaign will start on August 12 and end by September 13.

An official spokesman of the DHBVN said today that the nigam had organised camps in 691 villages in different districts under the first five phases of the campaign and released over 17,500 domestic and non-domestic connections. The fifth phase was completed on July 26 last under which 231 villages were covered.

Jan Shatabadi to start in September

The much-awaited Jan Shatabadi between Chandigarh and New Delhi is likely to start next month.

A railway official said although the necessary orders with regard to the running of the train is yet to be received, the possibility of the train having its maiden run next month cannot be ruled out.

“Also, a decision on whether the run will be from Chandigarh to New Delhi or other way round is awaited”, he said. The Divisional Railway Manager, Ambala, Mr Deepak Krishan, said the orders for the Chandigarh-New Delhi Jan Shatabadi had not yet been received. “The train maintenance is going to take place in Chandigarh,” he said.

The coaches for the train are being prepared at Integral Coach Factory, Perumbur. The coaches are going to significantly redefine comfortable travel. The seats of the coaches are going to be ergonomically designed. Besides that, there will be heat insulation of the coaches and noise barriers will reduce the noise level. The new train promises to be a Shatabadi which will be a value for money travel.

X-ray machine donated

A mobile X-ray machine was today dedicated to the people for the cause of TB eradication at a camp held by the Rotary Club of Ambala today.

The TB detection and eradication camp is in cooperation with the club of New York, the district administration and the Health Department. The Civil Surgeon, Dr S.I. Kaushik, dedicated the X-ray machine, worth Rs 1 lakh, at the camp held at Mahavir Eye and General Hospital, Ambala Cantonment.

Club president, Mr Naresh Bharadwaj, said 150 patients were examined and 10 patients were found to be suffering from TB. The names of the patients have been registered and for one year their treatment will be undertaken free of cost.

Mr Bharadwaj said with the machine, TB detection would be simpler and the outreach of the programme would be greatly increased. A permanent help centre for TB detection has been set up at the hospital, near BD Flour Mill. A number of Rotarians were also present on the occasion.

Jawan cremated

BSF Head Constable Gian Chand, who was killed in the valley, was cremated in his native village, near here, today. The cremation took place at Khanpur Rajputana village. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr. D.D. Gautam, Superintendent of Police, Mr Manoj Yadav, SDM Naraingarh, Mr Mahashwar Sharma, Zila Sainik Board Secretary, Capt Narwal, Mr Pawan Dewan were also present.

Mr D.D. Gautam, announced an ex gratia sum of Rs 10,000 on behalf of the Red Cross, Ambala, to the deceased’s family.

Life-term for murder accused

The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Ambala, Ms Anita Chaudhary, yesterday sentenced a murder accused Sarvjit Singh, to life imprisonment.

The Superintendent of Police, Ambala, Mr Manoj Yadava, said a case was registered in Ambala City on the complaint of Mr Jitender Kumar that a woman Swaran Kaur was staying in his house whose husband had gone to England after retiring from the Railway Police. Swaran Kaur’s two daughters and a son were in England, while three daughters were settled in Punjab.

On April, 26, 1994, stench was emanating from her accommodation. When the door was broken open, Swaran Kaur was found murdered, and the murderer had locked the door from outside. The police traced the murderer and a challan was filed in court on December 8, 1994. The accused has been sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500.

A major fire broke out in a godown at Ambala City tonight.

The fire broke out at about 11 p.m. in a godown near Bans Bazar on Shuklakund road. The fire then spread to an adjoining godown. While one godown was stocked with foam mattresses, the other stocked bamboo.

The exact cause of the fire was not yet known. Goods worth lakhs were gutted. There were no reports of casualties. At the time of filing of the report, Fire Department personnel were battling the blaze.
