Curfew lifted from Vadodara

Vadodara, March 10
Curfew was completely lifted from all parts of the city today while the Army staged flag marches in at least two of the nine other curfew-bound towns in the central Gujarat district, which had witnessed widespread communal violence and arson in the aftermath of the Godhra train carnage.

Though curfew had been lifted earlier in the city, except in the Wadi, City and Panigate police station areas, the authorities decided to lift it totally after the night curfew imposed in the three sensitive areas ended on a peaceful note today.

Official sources said the Army had staged flag marches in the tribal-dominated Chhota Udepur and Tejgadh towns yesterday as tension continued to prevail there. After remaining curfew-bound for more than 48 hours, a six-hour relaxation was given to most sensitive Tejgadh.

According to District Collector Bhagyesh Jha, the law and order situation in the district was improving fast with no major violent incident reported during the past 24 hours.

Apart from Tejgadh, night curfew will continue in Savli, Padra, Dabhoi, Sankheda, Desar, Bodeli, Pavi Jetpur and Chhota Udepur towns, Mr Jha said adding that the authorities would consider giving further relaxation in curfew to these areas after a review of the situation today.

Police Commissioner D D Tuteja said the three columns of the Army, deployed in the city, would soon go back to their barracks but would remain on a stand-by as the situation now seemed to be under control.

Admitting that there was political pressure not to arrest the Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal activists, allegedly involved in the riots that broke out in the city after the Godhra incident, Mr Tuteja said the 1,300-odd persons arrested on riot-related offences included several activists of these two organisations. Denying the allegation that weak cases were being registered against most of the accused, he asserted that the police would not spare anybody charged with indulging in violence, arson and looting. Meanwhile, the police has not been able to find any clue regarding the whereabouts of the three armed miscreants, who ran away with Rs 4.55 lakh after brutally assaulting a senior security officer of a security agency at Alkapuri here yesterday. Hang me if indicted by Shah panel, says Modi

Ahmedabad, March 10
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who is under attack for “all round failure” in handling the communal violence, has challenged that he was even “ready to be hanged” if indicted by the Shah Commission, which is to probe the Godhra incident and the subsequent fallout.

“I am ready to be hanged if indicted by the judicial commission. If for bringing peace in 72 hours I should be hanged, then I am ready to pay for the rope,” Mr Modi said addressing a meeting organised by Maskati Newcloth Market Association here last evening.

Cautioning people against rumour mongers and those who were indulging in “motivated campaign” against his government, Mr Modi said he would live up to the responsibility given by the people.

He said the Godhra railway station massacre was an “inhuman incident”, which should move the hearts of all sane people and also convince them that it was an act of “terrorism”. PTITop

Muslims serve Hindu gods

Kadankode, (Kerala), March 10
They may have crossed swords and spilt blood umpteen times in the name of religion and politics over the past 50 years in the sensitive areas of north Kerala.

But that has not deterred Muslims from taking the lead in celebrating the dances of Hindu gods at the temples in this sleepy village in Kasaragod district. The Hindus also think it a necessity to seek help from their Muslim brethren in conducting the Theyyam, a festival that has come to symbolise the harmony in culture of north Kerala.

Thus, for eight nights and days, when gods descended for the “Perumkaliyattam,” (grand festival of Theyyams) after 47 years, all communities came together last month as if to send a message to live in harmony to those torn apart by communal hatred elsewhere.

Millions of devotees from all religions, even foreigners, came to watch this festival when the Theyyams (derived from the word “Daivam”, meaning divinity or God) took the centre stage. The Muslim community is involved from the organisational stage itself.

The posts of the four vice-chairmen in the Festival Committee are held by the community drawn from the four Jamayats in the locality. Hundreds of Muslim volunteers also pitch in to manage the festival.

General Convener of the committee V. Narayanan told UNI that the rights for supplying salt for the feast is held by the Valiyapeedikakyil tharawad (family), a prominent Muslim family in Kadangode.

About 250 Theyyams, representing both the good and evil forms of gods and goddesses, danced at the festival, held from February 4 to 11. On an average, 25 different Theyyams performed each day. UNITop

2 BSF docs held for taking bribes

New Delhi, March 10
Two BSF doctors, posted in BSF Academy at Tekanpur in Gwalior, were arrested for being allegedly involved in a recruitment racket.

An amount of more than Rs 54 lakh was allegedly collected by the two doctors, B.K. Sahoo and Santosh Kumar Jha, over a number of years for manipulating the recruitment of constables. The case has been handed over to the CBI for further investigation, a BSF press note said here today.

During investigation, it was found that candidates allegedly had paid amounts, varying from Rs 60,000 to Rs 80,000 to touts. It was detected that 29 candidates, whose names figured in the Board Proceedings of the recruitment, had not been issued any call letters for interview by the academy. Besides, the academy had also not received applications from them, the press note said.

Out of the 29 candidates directed to appear for verification of records, 14 candidates appeared. During verification of documents, it was found that the call letters produced by them were different from the ones actually issued by the academy, the press note said.

Claiming that the doctors had confessed to having received large amounts of money during recruitment, the press note said searches were conducted by a board of officers in two premises in Delhi on March 7 and Rs 54 lakh and some documents seized.

The accused have been handed over to the CBI and a case, for possessing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income registered against them. “The investigations are likely to lead to some more arrests,” it added. PTITop

DMK chief observes fast

Chennai, March 10
DMK President M. Karunanidhi today resorted to a fast demanding action against the March 8 attack on the newly inaugurated MLA office at Wallaja Road here.

Mr Karunanidhi, who observed the fast in front of the MLA office, alleged that the attack was carried out by “rowdy elements with the support of the ruling AIADMK.’’

“I am resorting to the fast despite my poor health condition in order “put an end to the rowdy culture in the state,’’ he told newspersons at the fast venue.

He pointed out that the MLA office was not his property, but that of the government.

The DMK President charged the police with inaction on a complaint lodged in connection with the attack. However, Joint Commissioner of Police (North Chennai) C Sylendra Babu, who arrived at the venue, informed Mr Karunanidhi that the police had received the complaint and was making inquiries. Moreover, the complaint did not charge any specific person, he pointed out.

Following this and an assurance from city Police Commissioner K. Vijay Kumar over the phone that the culprits would be arrested soon, Mr Karunanidhi called off the two-hour long fast. UNI
