DMK to quit if temple gets nod
Kumbakonam (TN), March 3 Referring to the Godhra train carnage and the subsequent communal backlash, he told newsmen here that only because of the adamant attitude and insistence of certain groups that the Ram temple should be built at the disputed site in Ayodhya that more than 300 people had been killed. Stating that only a secular government could rule the country, he said the DMK had aligned with the BJP only on the assurance that the latter would function without any religious affinity and eschew parochialism.” We will not be there if that was trampled upon,’’ he asserted. Regretting that all this was happening in Gujarat, the land where Mahatma Gandhi was born, he said it was not for this that the nation had fought for independence.

Suo motu SC orders sought on violence New Delhi, March 3 Demanding immediate banning of the VHP and the Bajrang Dal, Editor of ‘communalism combat’ Teesta Setalvad told reporters here that “VHP activists are preventing entry of officials and others in many areas and the government is actively allowing it. Journalists are not allowed into the areas of violence. There is no information on the number and identity of the victims.” Asking the apex court to issue suo motu orders to restrain the “unlawful actions of kar
sevaks” and to “prevent the access to media” Mr Setalvad alleged “this is not an isolated incident. The property of minorities have been systematically targeted by communal terrorists. Horrific stories of abuse, even of children, are emerging from the relief camps.” The activists, under the banner of
‘SAHMAT’, a socio-cultural NGO, will file an appeal regarding the same in the apex court tomorrow, she said.

Bloodshed revives memories of ’84 riots
New Delhi, March 3 But exemplary punishment to the perpetrators of the 1984 riots could have acted as a deterrent to the Gujarat reprisals for the Godhra train-arson, according to Advocate H.S. Phoolka. Counsel for the November ’84 Carnage Committee, who represent the riot victims, is deposing before the Nanavati Commission probing into the anti-Sikh violence. “Both incidents have something in common — both miss out on the fixation of responsibility for the violence,’’ Mr Phoolka added. “In both instances, there is a ‘pass-on-the-buck’ attitude on the part of the administration. In Gujarat, the police and the Army blame each other for the delay in controlling the violence.’’ In the 1984 riots case, the Justice Mishra Commission, had observed that 2,000 lives in Delhi could have been saved had the Army been called in time to prevent reprisals for the killing of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. “The situation in Gujarat is, in fact, like digging out the past (1984 riots). The Army has said it was not requisitioned in time while the police charges it with non-cooperation,’’ Mr Phoolka said. On February 26, the same question why — the Army was called in late during the 1984 violence — came up before the Nanavati Commission, too, with the Army listing a sequence of events to show that the administration, under erstwhile Lt-Governor P.G. Gavai, took inordinately long to decide the matter.

He said the state’s annual plan would be formulated after studying the provisions of the Union Budget, 2002-2003. Plans are also afoot to formulate schemes for promoting industrial development, he added. The Chief Minister said there was an impending need to eradicate the problem of unemployment from Uttaranchal and that his government was committed to the task. He said he would lay more emphasis on increasing the cash-credit ratio (CRR) for which the government would negotiate with the banking and the insurance sectors. He said he would see that every department effectively, implemented Central-sponsored schemes in the state. In addition, assistance from foreign institutional donors would be sought for funding schemes in collaboration with IIT, Roorkee. In response to a question, the Chief Minister said he would allocate portfolios to members of his Council of Ministers in a day or two. Among other issues that demanded the government’s immediate attention were to complete important legislative and constitutional procedures such as administering oath to members of the newly constituted state Legislative Assembly, election of a new Speaker, address by the Governor and calling of the Assembly’s Budget session. |

Probe sought into scribe’s arrest
Madurai, March 3 Mr Nedumaran, who had played a significant role in the release of Kannada actor Rajkumar from the captivity of forest brigand Veerappan, alleged that the police had foisted cases against Mr Sivasubramanian. Tamil Nadu Home Secretary Naresh Gupta’s recent statement justifying the search was condemnable, he told mediapersons here. He also urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, who had assumed charge for the third time, to take necessary action against the erring police personnel. The Special Task Force in Tamil Nadu, which was not able to nab Veerappan, was indulging in such tactics in an attempt to indict Nakkeeran Editor Gopal in the case, he charged.
