VHP asks Muslims to condemn attack

Ahmedabad, February 28
The VHP today appealed to the minority community to condemn yesterday’s attack on “Ram sevaks” in a train at Godhra and warned that “Hindus do not have patience for eternity.”

VHP International Vice-President Acharya Giriraj Kishore told reporters here at the Sola Civil Hospital, where 54 out of the 58 bodies of the train attack victims were brought, that “Hindus should maintain calm and keep patience. I appeal to Muslim brethren to condemn the attack and ask them not to test Hindus’ patience. Hindus are keeping a restraint but if such incidents do not stop, there can be a counter reaction which may be uncontrollable”.

The VHP leader alleged that the attack was pre-planned and took place with the connivance of the Assistant Station Master of Godhra and personnel of the Government Railway Police who despite being there chose to be silent spectators. He demanded an inquiry by the government into their role in the conspiracy behind yesterday’s attack on Sabarmati Express train passengers.

Acharya Kishore said Godhra was a perpetual spot of mischief. In 1992, “kar sevaks” were attacked while going to Ayodhya, he said and demanded strict action against those responsible for the dastardly attack.

He said the government should take steps to ensure that such attacks did not recur in Godhra which was a pocket of a particular community.

To a question what did he mean by counter reaction, he shot back by asking “do I have to say for every action there is a reaction. It would be very difficult for the Hindus to maintain patience at such a heavy price”.

Asked whether following yesterday’s attack the VHP planned to change the programme for the construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya for which “Ram sevaks” were gathering in great number there, he said there were no such plans. “There is no change in our (VHP’s) deadline of March 12 and the programme is to continue on schedule. “Ram sevaks” would continue to reach Ayodhya, let the government arrest them, he said.

About his programme in the city today, he said he was going to take part in the funeral procession of “martyrs” at Khokra in East Ahmedabad later in the day and would also meet the Chief Minister Narendra Modi if time permitted. PTI
