RLD not to support SP

Lucknow, March 4
The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief and the Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Ajit Singh, today said his party would not support the Samajwadi Party (SP) in its efforts to form the next government in Uttar Pradesh.

The RLD, which has 14 MLAs, had contested the Assembly election in the state as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre and as such there was no question of supporting the SP chief, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, in his bid to form the government.

He said the decision was taken after consulting the newly elected MLAs of the party and denied that there was any difference on this issue. Mr Singh said the RLD would play its role in the formation of the next government as a constituent of the NDA.

When asked whether his party would support the BSP if the latter staked its claim to form the government, the RLD chief said the matter would be decided when the BSP made such a claim.

Mr Singh denied that there was a possibility of a split in his party over the question of supporting a Mulayam Singh Yadav-led Government and termed media reports to this effect as the “SP propaganda”.

He said the RLD Legislature Party leader would be elected in a couple of days. Mr Singh, who was scheduled to have a meeting with the Governor Mr Vishnu Kant Shastri, later in the day, said his party would strive for the creation of a separate “Harit Pradesh”, carving districts of the western region.

Referring to the Ayodhya imbroglio, Mr Singh said the matter could resolved only through talks or a court verdict.

When asked about the alleged laxity of the Gujarat Government in dealing with the situation in the state, he said it was not the proper time for playing the “blame game”. The facts will come out after the investigation. PTI

Godhra victims bitter, insecure

Tribune News Service

Ahmedabad, March 4
Tension was palpable after the Godhra carnage and Farzana, 34, a labourer in the Naroda Patian area of Ahmedabad felt threatened for the first time in her life. She held her two daughters by their arms as the family spent tense hours on Friday.

Living in a hutment with about 200 other families, mostly Muslim, they were preparing to flee the area in case things became too hot. A mob wielding sharp-edged weapons and carrying petrol and kerosene entered their area in the evening and as the families ran for their lives from the rear, an equally strong mob confronted them from the opposite Adirection.

Kerosene was sprinkled on the trapped victims and Farzana soon fell down while managing to hold on to one of her daughters. Fortunate to have been brought to the local Civil Hospital by the police which arrived at Naroda hours after the carnage, Farzana found that she had lost her husband and a daughter in the violence. “I do not know where I will go from here,” she moans.

Naimuudin, 27, a baker, says he had lost 14 members of his family in the orgy of violence in Naroda where the official toll is 60. “When the police came hours later, I did not move fearing that the rioters had come again. Finally, I gathered courage to yell for help and I was brought to the hospital,” he says.

Ramji Bhai, an auto driver, took the risk of running his auto despite the communal tension only to find himself in the hospital. The passengers he was ferrying on Saturday threw petrol at him to set him on fire.

Among the victims are several daily wage labourers from Rajasthan who are trying to eke out a living. Ragho Bal from Sirohi in Rajasthan was hit by bullets at the Azad Chowk while he was inching towards the safety of his house on Friday. His family ensured that there was strong retaliation the next day.

Over 450 persons have been killed in the state in the violent response to the Godhra carnage. The civil hospital here has received 309 cases from Ahmedabad, half of them with serious injuries sustained due to stabbing, firing and burns.

Respect PM’s stand on Ayodhya: Karunanidhi

Chennai, March 4
The DMK President, Mr M. Karunanidhi, today asked the people to respect Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee’s commitment that the Centre would not allow construction of the Ram Temple unless a solution was found either through a dialogue or court verdict.

Mr Karunanidhi had yesterday threatened to pull out of the ruling NDA, if construction of the temple was allowed at the disputed site.

In a statement here, he said everybody should pay heed to the Prime Minister’s words and maintain peace, which alone could protect the unity of the country.

Hindus and Muslims should not subject themselves to the instigations of a “few” religious fundamentalists and “political opportunists” who were waiting to fish in troubled waters, he said.

He said the DMK had maintained that the NDA Government would not deviate from its assurance to protect the interests of the minorities at all cost.

He said those who want to “chain peace and communal amity” were the enemies of “humanism,” he said. PTI

No further NCERT book review: govt

New Delhi, March 4
The government has ruled out any further review of the recent changes made in NCERT textbooks.

In a written reply to a question on whether the government was aware of errors in the new History syllabi, Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD) Rita Verma told the Rajya Sabha that while NCERT had undertaken suitable measures on the basis of the comments and suggestions received from well-known historians and the CBSE, “no review is being considered”.

She said all manuscripts (of textbooks) were being rigorously examined at workshops to ensure that the books remain free from factual errors as well as “any sectarian or ideological bias”.

In reply to another question on whether the government was aware of the resentment in the academic circles about the recent revision of history textbooks, the minister replied in the affirmative but termed the reaction of some historians to the review as “based on ideological consideration”. PTI
