Case registered against 30 persons for duping LIC
Police to probe employees’ involvement also
Ludhiana, August 25
In a major fraud against the local branch of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), 30 persons in five different cases have allegedly duped the organisation of lakhs of rupees by first availing building loan and then not paying instalments, claiming that the loanee had died whereas he was very much alive.

Ludhiana, August 25
Mystery shrouded the identity of a 10-year-old boy, Santosh Pujari, who claimed he was “lost” but was recovered from the local railway station here this afternoon. Though the railway officials and the Government Railway Police offered eatables to the boy and fulfilled his other needs, it could not be ascertained whether he is a resident of Ludhiana or Mugalsarai in Bihar.

The Returning Officer for the elections to the Punjab Agricultural University Teachers’ Association (PAUTA) has said that the present PAUTA President and Secretary are eligible for candidature, clearing the controversy on the issue.

PSEB officials booked for fraud, cheating
Ludhiana, August 25
The police has booked three officials of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB), including an Executive Engineer, for fraud, breach of trust and embezzlement of funds. The officials, facing criminal charges under sections 166/ 167/ 200/ 409/ 418/ 477A/511 and 120-B IPC are Mr B.K. Arora, Executive Engineer, Mr N.K. Sharma, Assistant Executive Engineer and Mr S.P. Singh, Revenue Accountant, posted at Sunder Nagar subdivision of the PSEB here.

Paddy starts arriving in mandis
Ludhiana, August 25
Although the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy has not been announced by the Union Government, paddy has started arriving in mandis of Punjab. Mandis of Amritsar district and some towns in the Malwa and Doaba regions have started receiving small quantities of paddy.

Man gets life term for killing son
Ludhiana, August 25
Gurdev Singh (65) of Aassi Kalan village has been sentenced to life imprisonment besides fine of Rs 2,000 for murdering his son, Inderjit Singh (22), on September 4,1996.

Assembly elections on schedule: Dalam
Ludhiana, August 25
The Punjab Minister for Public Relations, Mr Natha Singh Dalam, today categorically said that the assembly elections in the state would be held on schedule and there was no possibility of the ruling combine going for a snap poll.

Workshop on environment pollution

Ludhiana district is getting the most polluted ground water in the country and the level of air pollution is also worst in the state. This was disclosed in “Enviro Millenium”, a workshop on ‘Zoning Atlas for siting of industries for Ludhiana’, organised by the Punjab Pollution Control Board here today.

Scribes condemn police misbehaviour

The Ludhiana Photo Journalists Association (LPJA) has demanded an immediate inquiry and suitable action against police officials doing security duty at local railway station just before the arrival of a Supreme Court Judge. Later, at the Circuit House also the police ordered mediapersons to park their cars outside the Circuit House premises.

Cancellation of WTO agreement sought
Ludhiana, August 25
The Rural Labour Struggle Committee, Ludhiana, held a public rally at Jodhan village near here yesterday. Addressing the rally, Mr Tarsem Jodhan, a former communist MLA, said the government’s anti-people and anti-labour attitude had made life miserable for the masses and all sections of society were distraught with the current regime.

Traffic park, computer centre inaugurated at PPA

The Punjab Police will soon construct a sprawling driving school cum traffic rules training park spreadover an area of five acres at the Punjab Police Academy at Phillaur. The state-of-the-art park will be a unique feature in the country. It will be used for training of the cops as well as used imparting training to the public.

Patwar Union serves ultimatum
Amloh, August, 25
In a meeting of the local Patwar Union, held here today and presided over its president, Mr Balkar Singh, it was alleged that a resident of Bhambri village had prepared a document bearing a forged signature of the halqa patwari and the matter was reported to the SDM, who directed the tehsildar on June 15 to take legal action.

Woman held for flesh trade
Khanna, August 25
The Sangrur police has rounded up a woman of Bagli Kalan village, 12 km from here. Sources said she had been arrested by the police for allegedly running a call girl house. The police has also arrested four persons of Samrala for interrogation in this connection and a case has been registered against one of them by the police.

One killed two hurt in group clash
Doraha, August 25
Reportedly, one man has been killed and two others injured in a scuffle between rival groups at Dhamot Kalan village on Thursday.

Ludhiana, August 25
The Youth wing of the Ludhiana Citizens Council in association with the Traffic wing of the city police launched a special “Traffic Safety Movement” at a function held here last evening. As part of the movement, the school students would be seen on the city roads giving lectures about traffic rules to the violators caught by the Traffic Police.

150 students donate blood
Ludhiana, August 25
Over 150 students donated blood for the thalassaemia patients during a blood donation camp jointly organised by the Punjab Thalassaemics Welfare Society and Dayanand Medical College and Hospital at SD Government College For Boys today. The camp was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr S.K.Sandhu.
