Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, August 25
The Youth wing of the Ludhiana Citizens Council in association with the Traffic wing of the city police launched a special “Traffic Safety Movement” at a function held here last evening. As part of the movement, the school students would be seen on the city roads giving lectures about traffic rules to the violators caught by the Traffic Police.

A number of personnel of the Traffic Police were also honoured by the council on the occasion. The personnel were selected after taking a secret opinion poll of the members of the council as well as some randomly selected persons from different areas of the city.

The honoured policemen included Mr Swaran Singh, Mr Karam Singh, Mr Gurcharan Singh, Mr Jaswinder Singh, Mr Pritam Singh, Mr Balraj Singh, Mr Malkiat Singh, Mr Jagmeet Singh and Mr S.S. Junga.

Inaugurating the movement, the council members distributed pamphlets containing detailed information about traffic rules and punishment for violation to the participants in order to encourage them to follow the rules. Activists from the council later distributed the pamphlets to motorists on the roads.

According to Mr Harmohinder Singh Hummy, president of the council, the movement would continue for several weeks in which the council members would organise seminars and lectures in different schools of the city to educate the children about the traffic rules.

He said the council and the Traffic wing of the city police would participate in a scheme in which the school students would act as traffic instructors. Mr Arun Pal Singh, SP (Traffic), disclosed that the schoolschildren would impart lectures about the traffic rules to the persons violating them.

The police hoped that the embarrassment faced by a violator after receiving a lecture from a child might help in regulating traffic as well as bringing down the accident rate in the city.
