Slight dip in fuel prices with tax cut
Petrol still cheaper in SAS Nagar, Panchkula

Chandigarh, June 19
The UT Administrator, Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), has ordered that the motor spirit tax on petrol be reduced from 15 paise per litre to 1 paisa per litre. This tax on diesel has been reduced from 10 paise per litre to 1 paisa per litre. The cost of petrol and diesel will still be more than that in SAS Nagar and Panchkula.

Farm labourers held forcibly: rights body
Chandigarh, June 19
At least five farm labourers are being forcibly withheld at different farmhouses in Nabha sub-division of Patiala district, says the People’s Vigilance Committee on Bonded Child and Migrant Labour, a non-government organisation keeping a watch of human rights violations. Seeking release and rehabilitation of the bonded labourers, the NGO has sent a complaint to the National Human Rights Commission.

PU pools go dry this summer

Except for a little time, the swimming pools at Panjab University have seen a dry summer this year. Serious efforts have been made to find the leakages but all attempts have failed so far. The water tank, filled up in the morning, is found empty within hours. A hole, detected as the possible cause, is currently being filled up.

Mayor calls special meeting on June 21

In line with the UT Administration’s directive, the Mayor, Mr Raj Kumar Goyal, today decided to convene a special meeting of the House of the Municipal Corporation on June 21 to discuss vital agenda items. The Administration had yesterday issued orders directing the MC to hold a meeting within the next 10 days to take decision on the time-bound agenda items, which have financial and legal implications.

GMCH facing shortage of doctors

The Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, is facing an acute shortage of doctors in the Medicine Department. It is learnt that many senior residents have quit the hospital for better prospects and uncertainty over the job security as the GMCH follows contract system for recruitment.

Concessions for over 100-cr IT projects likely
SAS Nagar, June 19
Information Technology projects, whish will bring an investment of over Rs 100 crore to the state, can now avail of a special package. The special concessions, focussing on the utilisation of land are likely to be adopted as a policy by the state government. The issue would be taken up in the next cabinet meeting, scheduled for June 23.

Kundi connections are here again

Stealing power is the way of life for residents of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh jhuggi colony located just south of Sector 49 here. About 2,000 families continue to steal power from a transformer in Sector 48. This is despite the fact that illegal connections (kundis) have been removed in the area in two major drives in the past six months.

Three arrested for selling smack
SAS Nagar, June 19
With in a week of arrest of a Nigerian national with 15 gm of smack from Phase VIII here, the local police today arrested three persons, including a woman, for selling smack to addicts from Chandigarh and the neighbouring rural areas. A total of 15 gm of smack has been seized by the police.

Four booked in assault case
Chandigarh, June 19
The local police has arrested four persons for rioting, causing simple injuries and criminal intimidation from a Sector 35 liquor shop in the late hours of Monday here. According to the police, the accused assaulted and threatened Mr Lokesh, a worker at the shop. According to the complainant, Mr Satish Gupta, owner of the shop, the incident took place at about 11 p.m. Those arrested are Jaskaran Singh, Inderpal Singh Brar, Bohar Singh and Sawarndeep Singh.

Charges against Madhan ‘proved’
Chandigarh, June 19
The prosecution today contended that all charges levelled against Maj V.K. Madhan, who is being tried by a General Court Martial for alleged dereliction of duty during the Kargil conflict, stood proved. In his closing address, the prosecution counsel, Col A.K. Malhotra (retd), maintained that in view of the oral and documentary evidence brought before the court, the prosecution had proved all charges.

Few buyers for works of art

Good support to the cause of art in the City Beautiful notwithstanding, one sad fact that clearly stands out with regard to art scenario in Chandigarh is that art here has virtually no takers. Ironical to note is that although the city has seen a record number of exhibitions over the past one year, it has not seen enough buyers for the art creations which are put up for show at various art galleries here.

Jaggi’s real debut

Comedian Jagtar Singh Jaggi has spilt with his co-artiste Bhagwant Mann and come up with his first album, ‘Gup Hai Ji Gup’. At a press conference here today, Jagtar Jaggi, who has produced 14 audio cassettes with better-known-comedian Bhagwant Mann, said his latest album had two songs.

Parliament Estimates Committee visits PGI
Chandigarh, June 19
The 13-member Parliament Estimates Committee led by Prof Ummareddy Venkateshwaralu today visited different areas of the PGI, including emergency wards, advanced paediatric centre, new OPD building and telemedicine centre. The committee also enquired about the patient load, faculty and non-faculty strength of the institute and the facilities offered by the PGI.

IMA to grade private hospitals
Chandigarh , June 19
The local branch of the Indian Medical Association is planning to formulate a criteria for grading private hospitals, nursing homes, laboratories and X-ray centers of city and give them ‘IMA-approved certificates’ based on infrastructure and facilities available.

Sunil Kumar of Shivalik Volleyball Academy, Chandigarh, has been selected to attend a coaching camp for Indian senior men volleyball team at SAI NS South Centre, Bangalore. The camp, which started on June 15, will continue up to July 31, according to his coach Mohan Nargeta.

The enforcement staff of the UT Estate office, in a major operation, removed 84 encroachments put up by typists and notaries behind the Deputy Commissioner's office in Sector 17 today.
