Police fudges facts to save colleague

Cops of the Chandigarh Police continue to behave as if they were above law. In a latest incident four days ago, a constable, Amrik Singh, posted with the PCR unit, and was riding his motor cycle, collided with a car in Sector 43 and hit its rear door at a road crossing. The police, in a blatant attempt to fudge facts and save “their man”, booked the car driver, Mr Rajesh Mittal, a resident of Sector 43.

The Central Excise Department has taken certain documents and records of Himachal Futuristics Communications Limited (HFCL) into its possession, besides questioning some of its officials to ascertain evasion of excise duty. The company is the service provider for privately operated Connect telephone network.

MC asked to check sullage disposal
SAS Nagar, June 14
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has been asked by the Punjab Government to plug the exit points of untreated sullage which was being discharged into seasonal rivulets, traversing through SAS Nagar. Taking a serious view of the untreated sullage being discharged by the Chandigarh civic body, a committee headed by the Principal Secretary, Punjab Housing and Urban Development Department, has asked the civic body officials to treat the sullage to bring it within 30 biological oxygen demand (BOD) level.

Canada ‘ready’ to open visa office in Chandigarh

The Canadian Government is ready to open a visa office in Chandigarh. This was stated today by Mr Sikander Singh Maluka, Power Minister, Punjab. He said he had gone to Canada last week and held a meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister.

Mayor to resume visits to wards

The Mayor, Mr Raj Kumar Goyal, has once again decided to resume his visits to the wards of various councillors, as part of the "Mahapaur Aap ke Dwar’’ programme. As per the detailed programme the visits, will start from June 19 and be completed by August 23.

‘Allot Kharar seat to BJP candidate’

The Plastic Manufacturers Association of Ropar today said that a move by the SAS Nagar administration to ban the use of polythene bags was against the order of the Deputy Commissioner, Ropar. They said the Deputy Commissioner had allowed the use of polythene bags subject to certain guidelines.

Plan to involve NGOs for counselling women

The police has decided to reactivate the practice of involving women NGOs in counselling for cases of the Crime Against Women Cell. The functions and role of women NGOs in mediating in the CAW cases will be evaluated during a meeting to be held on June 16 at the police headquarters and to review the role of women NGOs enrolled with the cell, the Chandigarh Police and de-list/enlist accordingly.

Case registered for dowry death
Nayagaon (Kharar), June 14
The Nayagaon police today registered a case of dowry death under Section 304-B of the IPC against Avtar Singh, a resident of the village. The accused’s wife, Simranjit Kaur, had died under mysterious circumstances on the morning of June 5. Police sources said that the case was registered after Simran’s family member formally lodged a complaint.

Project to monitor communicable diseases

The UT Health Department will soon initiate a pilot project to monitor communicable diseases in the city. The project, under the National Surveillance Programme for Communicable Diseases, will monitor diseases like cholera, acute diarrhoea, hepatitis-B, malaria, dengue and Japanese encephalitis.

South Western Air Command (SWAC), with 139 points, won the overall championship trophy in the Air Force Weightlifting Championship, which concluded at the Air Force Station here today.
