The district police today claimed to have solved the mystery of the murder of seven members of a family which took place at Burj Sidhwa village on the intervening night of May 24 and 25 with the arrest of the main accused Ram Sewak, a resident of Farukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh.

Floods: team visits Khanauri
Khanauri (Sangrur), June 14
A high-powered committee headed by Ms Surjit Kaur Sandhu, Secretary, Irrigation, Punjab, today visited the town and other flood-prone areas in the Moonak subdivision of the district with regard to the floods caused by the Ghaggar every year in the rainy season.

Punjab cops bound for Jharkhand

Plea to set up panel to probe genesis of terrorism
Chandigarh, June 14
Dr Joginder Dayal, secretary of the Punjab unit of the CPI, has urged the Union Government to set up a judicial commission headed by a Judge of the Supreme Court to probe the “genesis of terrorism” in the state. He said though the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, had promised to set up such a commission he backed out later.

IMA against Bill on private hospitals

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has taken a strong view of the proposed move by the state government to register all private hospitals and medical establishments in the state with the Health Secretary or his nominee at a meeting held here today.

The city is facing frequent power cuts for the past three days. The worst-hit areas include Rattan Singh Chowk, Nai Abadi, Majitha Road, Katra Ahluwalia, Ajnala Road, Basant Avenue, Beauty Avenue, Race Course Road, Guru Bazar and areas of Katra Jaimal Singh, Hall Bazar and Lawrence Road.

Steps to curb female foeticide

The residents, who are panic stricken over the untimely demise of local residents, were further jolted by the death of Ajaib Singh, alias Mithu Singh possibly due to hepatitis-B last evening.

Naughty monkey captured
Bathinda, June 14
The monkey that had been creating problems for the residents of the city and had bitten many children in the past few days was today captured by volunteers of the Sahara Jan Seva. The people of the city had been urging the civil and police authorities to tackle the problem for many days.

Ordinance on Panchayat Act approved

Mr Nirmal Singh Kahlon, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, Punjab, today approved the ordinance to be issued to effect amendments to the Panchayati Raj Act. He said the ordinance would be issued within two days.

Farmers across the state were at the receiving end following a severe power shortage due to the recent tripping of two power units and non-functioning of another for the past two months, leading to only three to four hours’ supply for the past one week.

Students of the BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy) programme of the Department of Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy of Guru Nanak Dev University are sore over the reported move of the university to change the eligibility criterion and give 70 per cent reservation to physical education students who have not studied medicine at the master’s level.
