SP plans ‘janandolan’ in Uttar Pradesh

Jaipur, June 5
Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said today that his party would launch a ‘janandolan’ against the policies of the BJP in UP on August 9.

Talking to reporters here after the conclusion of the two-day meeting of the SP executive committee, Mr Mulayam Singh said similar ‘janandolans’ would also be launched in neighbouring Uttaranchal, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, for which programmes would be chalked out later on.

Mr Yadav alleged that because of the BJP’s policies, all sections of society including farmers, labourers and business community, were facing hardships in that state.

Under the agitational programme for UP, public meetings of People’s Front leaders would be held at Moradabad, Mainpur, Muzaffarnagar, Jhansi, Banda and Bareilly, the dates for which would be announced later, the SP leader said.

He said his party’s leaders would tour all districts in UP with regard to organisational purposes from June 12 to 17.

Mr Yadav, a former Defence Minister, said the Bahujan Samaj Party was “not a secular party,” adding that it was closely associated with the BJP on two occasions and still expected much from that party.

On the coming UP Assembly elections, the SP leader said the People’s Front, of which his party was a constituent, would remain equidistant from both the Congress and the BJP. The main contest in these elections would be between the SP and the BJP.

The SP leader said either a court verdict or a compromise between the parties involved on the Ram Temple dispute at Ayodhya would be acceptable to the Samajwadi Party.

Had the temple issue been left to the people to decide in the initial stages of the dispute, it would have been settled by now, Mr Yadav said while talking to newspersons at the end of a two-day meeting of the party executive here.

He alleged that the BJP made the dispute a national issue for the sake of political power.

Mr Yadav today rejected the charge that his party had a soft corner for the NDA government at the Centre, saying that it was “totally wrong.”

Mr Yadav rejected the demand by RJD for the inclusion of the Congress in the People’s Front (Lok Morcha). RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav should not offer such an advice and instead confine himself to making efforts to save his party government in Bihar with the Congress help, he quipped. UNITop

No changes’ in UP unit of BJP

New Delhi, June 5
The BJP today made it clear that there would be no change in the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit and state Public Works Minister Kalraj Misra, who was recently elected to the Rajya Sabha, would be retained as the BJP president during the coming elections.

BJP Vice-President Pyarelal Khandelwal, who is also in charge of UP affairs, told newspersons that Mr Misra would remain BJP president during the elections and he would not be inducted into the Union Cabinet. This clarification comes in the wake of rumours that Mr Misra would be accommodated in the Cabinet.

Mr Khandelwal said it was not correct to say that a person elected to the Rajya Sabha would not take interest in the state affairs. “He will actively work for the BJP’s success in the elections,” he added.

He said the meeting convened by BJP president K. Jana Krishnamurthy this evening with party leaders from UP was aimed at formulating the party’s strategy and making it a strong force. The meeting would be attended by Home Minister L.K. Advani, Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, UP Chief Minister Rajnath Singh, Mr Kalraj Misra and other state leaders.

Making it clear that the BJP did not intend to dump any of its NDA partners in the elections, the BJP Vice-President said, “We have taken no such decision. But the allies should realise ground realities while making demands.”

About the BJP’s discussions with the Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Ajit Singh regarding his admission into the NDA, Mr Khandelwal said, “So far, there are negative indications.” He said the BJP had made it “amply clear” to Mr Ajit Singh that it would not support creation of any more states in the country.

He, however, said the BJP would not come in the way of Mr Ajit Singh making this an election issue and it was up to the NDA to accept the demand.

Others who were expected to participate in the meeting included Mr Omprakash Singh, Mr Lalji Tandon, Mr Hridaynath Singh, Mr J.P. Chaturvedi and Mr Ramprakash Tripathi. UNITop

The commission had issued notices to 25 persons, including the former the BJP President, the former Samata Party chief and senior army officials to provide them with an opportunity to place their versions in an affidavit.

The Army officials to whom notices have been issued include Maj-Gen P.S.K Choudhry, Maj-Gen Manjit Singh Ahluwalia, Maj-Gen Satnam Singh, Maj-Gen S.P. Murgai (retd), Brig Iqbal Singh and Col Anil Sehgal.

Commission sources said it was not necessary to call all witnesses for cross-examination personally. Written interrogatory questions could be issued to them.

The notices ask the individuals to reply to the specific allegations and charges against them as shown or referred to in the videotapes, released by the website on March 13.

Maj-Gen Choudhry has admitted having taken money while most of the other senior officers, who have been served notices by the commission, have been found guilty in the initial court of inquiry instituted by the Army. They may either face court martial or be dismissed under Article 19 of the Army Act.

In the first hearing, the commission would hear people who have responded to the notice and notifications.

Assam Govt rules out ceasefire

Guwahati, June 5
The Assam Government has ruled out the possibility of announcing any unilateral ceasefire in Assam to initiate a dialogue with militant groups operating in the state.

Talking to UNI here today, the Chief Minister said he would like to persuade militant groups through spontaneous movement for peace.

These groups should realise the sincerity of the government and the desire of common people, he averred.

“If the militants also do not announce ceasefire, the unilateral ceasefire would be meaningless. In fact I did not take up the matter with the Prime Minister too. Let there be an atmosphere for peace in the state and then we initiate the process. We are not in a hurry,” he said.

The government would launch a “movement for peace’’ from June 12 to usher in a congenial atmosphere through a possible negotiation with militants in the state, the Chief Minister said.

He said the government’s stand was well known but he could ensure complete sincerity of his government by negotiating with militant groups.

“This movement would be launched throughout the state and would involve all sections of society to ensure that it percolates down to the district level,’’ he said.

On the long-pending panchayat polls, he said these would be held by the middle of December. UNITop

IA plane hijack: Pak yet to reply

New Delhi, June 5
Pakistan is yet to respond to a request of Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) seeking the arrest and extradition of five hijackers of the Indian Airlines plane in December, 1999, and two of their accomplices.

Agency sources said it was nearly one year since an extradition request was routed through the Ministry of External Affairs and Pakistan had not yet responded.

The sources said that the CBI had furnished the addresses of Ibrahim Athar, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Zahoor Ibrahim, Shahid Akhter Sayed and Shakir — and their two accomplices Yusuf Azhar and Abdul Rauf.

The Indian authorities made a formal request to the Pakistan Government for extradition of seven persons under the SAARC and the Hague agreements in which Pakistan has the obligation to extradite them, the CBI sources said.

Yusuf Azhar and Abdul Rauf are believed to be the key conspirators behind the hijacking of the plane from Kathmandu to Kandahar in south Afghanistan on December 24.

The Interpol has already issued a “Red Corner” notice against the seven persons at the request of the CBI.

The CBI on June 21 last year filed a charge sheet against 10 persons in the hijacking case which included these seven and three Indian nationals.

The three Indian nationals chargesheeted are Abdul Latif alias Patel, Bhupalmar Damai, alias Yusuf Nepali, and Dilip Kumar Bhujel, the agency sources said and claimed that all the three had confessed to their involvement in the case.

The CBI has also secured court permission for a separate trial of three accused in the IC-814 hijacking case as the agency was unable to secure the arrest of five hijackers and two of their accomplices from Pakistan, the sources said.

The sources said the agency had moved the designated court in Patiala, which had agreed to hold a separate trial of three others — Abdul Latif, alias Patel, Bhupalmar Damai, alias Yusuf Nepali and Dilip Kumar Bhujel — already arrested by the agency.

The United State’s Federal Bureau of Investigations has also filed a case in the hijacking of the Indian Airlines plane as one American national was also onboard the ill-fated plane. PTITop

Mamata’s re-entry into NDA opposed

New Delhi, June 5
Samata Party leader Prabhunath Singh today opposed the re-entry of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee into the NDA.

In a letter to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, he said “I strongly oppose the re-entry of Mamata Banerjee into the NDA.” I would like that people like Ajit Kumar Panja who has faith in the leadership of Mr Vajpayee should be roped in to expand NDA’s base in West Bengal.

The re-admission of Ms Banerjee into the alliance would hurt people like Mr Panja and amount to disrespect to the verdict given by the people of West Bengal against the Trinamool leader in the recently concluded assembly elections, he said.

Describing Ms Banerjee as temperamentally unstable, he said she had stabbed the NDA in the back. UNITop
