The new toll tax imposed by the Himachal Government on any vehicle crossing the state borders has become a constant source of annoyance for the border area residents of both the states. These residents have to cross the state borders almost on a daily basis for job or business purposes.

Prisoner’s death: probe indicts jail officials
Kapurthala, June 5
Magisterial inquiry into the mysterious death of undertrial Gurnam Singh in the district jail on May 25 held the jail authorities and a doctor of jail hospital responsible for not giving timely medical treatment resulting in the death of the undertrial prisoner.

Release list of ‘corrupt’ leaders

Mr Toga Singh, General Secretary of the Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal (SHSAD), today said the Chief Minister, Punjab, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, should make public the names of the politicians who were allegedly involved in corruption and on which the Punjab Lok Pal had sought the opinion of the government.

Mr Prem Singh Chandumajra, General Secretary, Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal (SHSAD), today said Giani Kewal Singh, Jathedar Damdama Sahib, should have resigned over the controversy regarding the suicide by his daughter-in-law.

Cong factions hold separate meetings
Mansa, June 5
Factionalism in the district congress unit came to the fore today when a group led by district congress chief Ram Paul Dhaipi, organised a meeting here today. The other group led by Mr Narotam Singh Chahal, a former president of the local municipal council, had passed a no-confidence resolution against Mr Dhaipi demanding his removal last week.

15 pc Assembly seats for Youth Cong
Bathinda, June 2
Mr Krishan Veer, secretary of the All-India, Youth Congress, who has been appointed in charge of Punjab affairs, said here today that 15 per cent of the Assembly seats would be given to members of the Youth Congress.

The Civil Lines Extension Residents Welfare Association, in association with the Bathinda Environment Society, today observed World Environment Day. Mr G.S. Mouji, chairman of the association, said in a press note issued here today that Mr Bhupinder Singh Bhullar, president of the municipal council, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Vigilance Dept told to conduct probe
Chandigarh, June 5
Taking up a petition alleging the supply of old books in new cover to government schools in Punjab at higher rates, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the State Vigilance Department to conduct a thorough probe into the allegations.

Shiv Sena relents, puts off function
Amritsar, June 5
The chairman of the Punjab unit of the Shiv Sena, Mr Surinder Dogra said the function for honouring families of victims of terrorism had been put off. He said only a Ramayana Path in memory of those who died would be held tomorrow.

There is considerable resentment against the Jammu and Kashmir Government’s decision to shift the base camp for Amarnath yatra from Pahalgam to Naunwan, 2 km ahead of Pahalgam.

Two die while digging well
Malerkotla, June 5
Two labourers digging a tubewell near Rurki Kalan village were buried alive last evening. The deceased, were identified as Devinder Singh and Didar Singh. The bodies were taken out of the well with the help of the police and sent for a post-mortem examination.

Nigerian held with heroin
Wagah (Amritsar), June 5
Customs officers here have arrested Ayo Franscisca Aisa Bokhai (53), a Nigerian national, and seized 560 gm of heroin valued at Rs 2.80 lakh in the domestic market. The Commissioner, Customs, Mr Vineet Ohri, while giving details of the seizure, said the Nigerian woman was part of an international gang involved in large-scale trade of narcotics.

The city, which has, of late, emerged as the biggest coaching centre of the state has produced one more topper. This time in the test conducted by Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, for admission to the Bachelor of Architecture course.
