Mohali MC jurisdiction to be expanded
SAS Nagar, June 1
Projecting an additional revenue of Rs 1 crore from octroi collection, the SAS Nagar Municipal Council is expanding its jurisdiction. An area of about 2000 acres, located on the south-east and north-east fringes of the town, would be included within the limits of the civic body.

New power-cut timings
Chandigarh June 1
Timings of the hour-long rotational power cuts in the city have changed from today and will remain so till June 15. And like the past fortnight, hospitals, the railway station, radio station, telephone exchanges, defence installations and water works, will be exempted from the cuts.

Day 2: Animals go without food
Chhat Bir (Patiala), June 1
Animals at the Chhat Bir zoo were forced to go for the second day today because of the ongoing controversy regarding the purchase of beef between two groups of top Punjab forest officials.

Govt depts not paying bills

MC to discourage use of plastic bags
Chandigarh, June 1
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh will shortly launch a campaign to discourage people from using plastic bags in the city. Apart from focussing on the harmful consequences of polythene, the campaign will promote the use of paper bags vis-a-vis plastic bags. A decision to this effect was taken by the Mayor, Mr Raj Kumar Goyal, today.

‘Early physical examination must in sexual assault cases’
Chandigarh, June 1
*A 10-year-old girl was molested by a “family friend”. Too young to understand the incident, the victim could not clearly explain what had actually happened. The medico-legal examination could not establish that the minor girl was actually raped. As a result the accused was let off.

35 city students make it to IIT
Chandigarh, June 1
Almost 35 students of the city, majority of them students of the local DAV College and DAV School, have made it to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The results of the Joint Entrance Examination, that was held on May 6, were declared here yesterday.

Clarification may be sought from Mayor
Chandigarh, June 1
BJP councillors, Mr Des Raj Tandon and Mr Gian Chand Gupta, have sought the inclusion of an agenda item seeking clarification from the Mayor about the allegations levelled against him and those levelled by him against the former three Mayors at the next meeting of the General House on June 8.

The Punjab Government was today able to negotiate terms and conditions with inhabitants of Madanpura village under a rehabilitation package for Madanpura and Lambian.

Raising day celebrated
Chandigarh, June 1
The Army Education Corps celebrated its 54th raising day in Chandimandir Cantonment today. According to a statement issued here today, a get-together of Western Command officers was organised to mark the occasion. The Chief of Staff, Western Command, Lt-Gen H.R.S. Mann was the chief guest on the occasion.

Mrs Khanna passes away
Chandigarh, June 1
Mrs Durga Devi Khanna, wife of late Mr Nihal Chand Khanna, passed away at New Delhi on Tuesday. She was 96.

Man, woman allege assault
Chandigarh, June 1
The local police has received two complaints of assault from the SBS Colony, Mauli Jagran, during the last 24 hours. In both incidents, cases under Sections 323, 325 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code have been registered.

Grace marks for science students
SAS Nagar, June 1
The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) has decided to give “ad hoc” grace marks in physics and chemistry to those who have taken the Class XII examinations in March. Even the percentage of the general grace marks that the board gives in certain cases has been raised this year. This has been done to maintain last year’s pass percentage.

Ranga’s interim bail plea rejected
Chandigarh, June 1
Suspended Haryana IAS officer R.K. Ranga’s application for interim bail in a corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation was today dismissed by Mr Justice S.S. Nijjar of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Case against innocent children dismissed
Chandigarh, June 1
A local court finally dismissed the theft case registered against two children of Bapu Dham colony. They were arrested by the city police on May 25. Arshi (Arshu Singh) and Dinesh (Himat Singh), both aged ten years, were arrested and a case under Section 379 of the IPC was filed against them.

Super Bazars: new recruitment stayed
Chandigarh, June 1
Staying the requisition sent by the Liquidator appointed in the Super Bazar case to the Employment Exchange for the recruitment of new employees for selling medicines, Mr Justice Mehtab Singh Gill of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today ordered the payment of the “available money” to the Super Bazar (Chandigarh) Employees Union and other petitioners.

Bail granted to Nigerian 
Panchkula, June 1
Mr V.P. Gupta, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Panchkula, today granted bail to Chuks Vincent, the Nigerian who was arrested by the Panchkula police for attempting to commit suicide by swallowing a packet of about 20 gm of heroine on May 29.

On a petition filed by Special Police Officers of Ropar district seeking regularisation of their services, a division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, comprising Mr Justice N.K. Sodhi and Mr Justice R.C. Kathuria, has issued notice of motion to the state for July 16.
