Chautala bent on thwarting Ajit’s
ambition Gurgaon, May 27 According to
reports, the RLD is contemplating the setting up of its organisational network in Haryana. This is interpreted in political circles as a retaliatory move by Mr Ajit Singh, against the INLD leadership and an effort to build up sustained counter-pressure against it on its home turf. For the record, Mr Ajit Singh’s father, the late Mr Charan Singh took keen interest in Haryana’s politics and was considered to have good following in the state as a Lok Dal leader. His wife once contested parliamentary elections from the Rohtak seat. Regardless of the opposition from the INLD, a powerful section in the BJP led by Union Home Minister L.K. Advani and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh, are backing Mr Ajit Singh’s case. They are said to have almost cleared the decks for his getting a berth in Union Cabinet. Reports have it that there is a move to give the Agriculture portfolio to Mr Ajit Singh, which will be another reason to raise the hackles of the INLD leadership. The INLD has been given to understand from informal channels that Mr Vajpayee has indicated in the BJP and governmental circles that he would meet Mr Chautala to sort out the issues to facilitate Mr Ajit Singh’s entry into the Council of Ministers. According to sources, before leaving for Manali, Mr Vajpayee in a meeting with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP’s national vice president Payare Lal Khandelwal with regard to the selection of Rajya Sabha nominee from that state, had expressed the view that he would meet Mr Chautala to sort out the issue between the INLD and the RLD. To bring more pressure on Mr Ajit Singh’s sympathisers in the NDA on the issue, the INLD has decided to continue with its public meetings in western Uttar Pradesh, considered to be the stronghold of Mr Charan Singh’s family. The INLD has already organised two public meetings in Meerut and Mathura districts of western Uttar Pradesh. It plans to organise meetings in Agra and Muzzafarnagar districts. In retaliation, the RLD has decided to organise public meetings in the same districts. Mr Ajit Singh has already addressed one such meeting. Notwithstanding the public postures of the INLD against the entry of Mr Ajit Singh in the NDA, its leaders have the feeling that the party is fighting a lost battle on the issue. The reason being that a powerful section in the BJP, both in UP and at the Centre, is backing his case. This section is said to be keen on BJP-RLD tie up for the coming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. There are more than 100 Assembly segments in western Uttar Pradesh on which the BJP has set its eye in the possible company with the RLD. There are also reports that two of the five MPs of the INLD are inclined to get a berth in the Union Council of Ministers. |
Get SYL canal completed:
Bansi Kurukshetra, May 27 Expressing apprehensions, Mr Bansi Lal said he feared that Mr Chautala would not take any step in getting SYL canal completed because of his friendship with the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal. Mr Bansi Lal said Mr Chautala was interfering in the western UP politics by organising rallies there because he had lost his ground in Haryana and was becoming unpopular among the Haryanvis. He was trying to extend the INLD base to UP at the cost of public exchequer of Haryana, he alleged. Ruling out his partnership with the BJP in the next elections, Mr Bansi Lal said his party would contest next elections in Haryana without any political alliance. When asked about his winning next elections, the HVP chief said he would be the next Chief Minister of Haryana. The HVP chief demanded an inquiry by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court into the Gurgaon’s master plan policy changed by a coloniser, who, he alleged, had not left specific space for public lawns. He alleged that the Haryana Government property of Delhi Canal Rest House land, costing over Rs 1 lakh per metre, was being sold at a throwaway price to some ‘benami’ dealers. Criticising the imposition of new taxes, he said the imposition of any tax before and after the passing of the Budget, was the misuse of the constitutional rights. He alleged that by imposing 4 per cent entry tax on industry, professional tax on small traders, Rs 9,000 annual tax on each furnace on halwais, doubling of canal water aabiyana as well as vehicle registration and licence fee, unusual hike in house tax rates and selling each form at the rate of Rs 500 for recruitment in the Police Department, the Chautala government had cheated the people of Haryana. He said if he came to power, his government would withdraw 4 per cent entry tax on industry, tax imposed on halwais Form S.T. 38 would also be withdrawn while the house tax structure would also be rationalised. Among others, HVP state general secretary, Dalbir Singh Gandhi, HVP Kurukshetra district president, Gurcharan Singh Ratgal and state youth general secretary, Baljeet Singh were present at the conference. Later Mr Bansi Lal addressed Northern Haryana Backward Sammelan. |
Farmers taking to cash
crops Faridabad, May 27 According to official sources, farmers of the district produced about 1.47 tonnes of vegetables and 17,235 tonnes of fruits in the year 2000-2001. While the area under vegetable crops increased to 8035 acres, the fruit trees occupied 75,000 hectares. The fruits that came in market mainly included papaya, lemon, banana, guava and ber. Besides these, vegetables of foreign origin were also grown in about 20 hectares of area during this period. Flowers, including gladioli, were
grown in 565 hectares of land. About 50 tonnes of strawberry fruit was also produced. According to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr S.C. Jain, one of the main reasons behind the change in the cropping pattern was due to various schemes launched by the Horticulture Department. He said the department had been maintaining ‘exhibition plots’ for farming flowers and fruits and guiding the farmers about the techniques, besides helping them financially. He said the government had been spending an amount of Rs 6,000 on one exhibition plot and last year the department prepared and exhibited over 48 plots of gladiolus flowers and turmeric last year. An amount of Rs 1.68 lakh was spent on the plots of flowers only. The department concerned, according to the Deputy Commissioner, had provided various loan schemes with subsidy ranging from 35 to 50 per cent to various categories of farmers. The department had provided an amount of Rs 7,000 with 50 per cent subsidy to individuals who want to develop ‘shednet’ for floriculture. At least 12 farmers gained from the ‘shednet’ scheme during the period. For setting up of ‘polygreen’ house loans having subsidy of 40 per cent are given. Similarly, according to officials, 50 per cent of matching grant was being provided to farmers seeking to check pests and weeds unwanted growth in production of vegetables and fruits. Free saplings of good variety of fruit trees had also been supplied in the ‘nutrition garden’ scheme, besides availability of ‘spray pumps’ for using pesticides. But on the other hand, more commercial gains and lower cropping period had attracted many farmers to adopt the new pattern. |
Road mishaps in Sonepat on the
rise Sonepat, May 27 The reasons behind the rising number of accidents are the plying of unauthorised buses, jeeps and three-wheelers without permits, drunken driving, poor maintenance of roads, lack of traffic lights at busy intersections and poor maintenance of buses and trucks. Some of these vehicles do not have properly working brakes and headlights. Moreover, the fast speed of jeeps and three-wheelers is another cause of the accidents. Pedestrians say traffic constables are busy extorting money from truck drivers. Such scenes can be witnessed every day at busy intersections. School buses do not observe the Supreme Court guidelines. Rickshaws, overloaded with schoolchildren, are a constant traffic hazard. There is no check on three-wheelers which release fumes beyond the permissible limits. To improve the traffic problems, a committee of prominent citizens was constituted a few years ago by a Senior Superintendent of Police. Members of the committee met only once and thereafter no further steps were taken. One of the police officials told this correspondent here today that it was the duty of the RTO to check vehicular pollution, but nothing ever was done in this respect. Meanwhile, rampant overloading is posing a serious danger to the lives of thousands of commuters. Passengers are often seen travelling on the roof tops of the private as well as Roadways buses. “It is due to the less number of buses of Haryana Roadways available to rural commuters who visit the district headquarters for various reasons,” say many office-goers. The roadways buses are hardly seen on certain routes and commuters are being forced to travel in private buses, commented some of the commuters. The situation on the Sonepat-Gohana route is described as the worst as no roadways bus plies in accordance with the schedule laid down on the time-table affixed on the general bus stand in the city as well as Gohana town. In some cases, officials of the Transport Department are also hand-in-glove with private operators as the lucrative routes are allotted to the private bus operators whereas the state roadways buses are allotted loss-making routes. Many commuters complain that private bus operators are the worst offenders as there is no check on whether the driver is trained or the road worthiness of the buses. Moreover, in the absence of fixed duty hours, drivers are compelled to work for long hours which cause fatigue and result in accidents. The poor maintenance of the rural roads make the situation worse, they said. Private buses and jeeps are often seen parked on the main roads thereby hampering the free movement of the traffic, say a number of local shopkeepers. |
Roads full of
potholes Kaithal The roads which have potholes like smallpox eruptions are: the Chhatrawas road, New Karnal Road, Timber Market Road, Hindu School Road, the Outer Ring Road from Bhagat Singh Chowk, to Chandana Gate, Dogran Gate, Siwan Gate and the Industrial Area Road at Jakholi Adda. Overflowing sewers have created pools of dirty water at Dogran Gate, Partap Gate, Sewan Gate, Chandana Gate, and along the railway line in front of the Mini Secretariat. The Manas drain constructed to carry flood water has become a stinking nullah. The Municipal Council doesn’t have funds to repair roads. The Public Health Department doesn’t have adequate funds to maintain the sewerage in the town. Moreover their is little coordination between the Municipal Council and the Public Health Department. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Phateh Singh Dagar, and the President, Municipal Council, Mr Kamal Chaudhary, have taken steps to improve the situation, but results are yet out of sight. |
Sultan Singh denies deserting
Cong Panipat, May 27 This clarification was given by veteran Congress leader and former Governor Sultan Singh, who has been appointed chairman of the Devi Lal Samarak Samiti by the Chautala government, to mediapersons here last evening. When asked about reports appearing in a section of the Press regarding the possibility of his nomination to Rajya Sabha, Mr Sultan Singh denied and said it was a baseless propaganda. He opined that the Devi Lal Samarak Samiti was not a political body but was meant to initiate some noble works in the state which would prove beneficial to people, particularly the younger generation. Praising the leadership of the Devi Lal, Mr Sultan Singh said the samiti was planning to send a proposal to the Union Sports Minister, Ms Uma Bharti, for setting up a sports academy at Rai. The samiti also planned to set up a high standard college on the pattern of Doon College. About his absence from the Congress rally at Panipat on May 20, Mr Sultan Singh said he could not participate because of his illness. However, he was of the view that the success of the rally had proved that the Congress was getting
stronger. About differences between the HPCC President, Mr Bhupender Singh Hooda, and the former Chief Minister Mr Bhajan Lal, Mr Sultan Singh said it was nothing new in the Congress and it would not affect the party. |
