HVP changes tack on purpose Gurgaon, May 6 The HVP dropped the brick, saying that the INLD government in Haryana would not complete its tenure. Mr Surender Singh, General Secretary of the HVP and son of former Chief Minister Bansi Lal, emphasised here that a constellation of forces within and out said the INLD were active on account of the style of functioning of the government. Quizzed further, he said the Lok Dal governments had never lasted their terms in Haryana. Former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal had also taken a vow to destabilise the government in six months. The fact that a number of INLD ministers and MLAs were not happy with the “dictatorial” functioning of Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala had further given a boost to the move for destabilising of his government, he added. The HVP today got a boost in its political campaign in south Haryana with the two senior leaders of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Mr Ram Chander Yadav and Mr Chatter Singh, joining it. They had unsuccessfully contested the last Assembly elections from Sohna (Gurgaon district) and Bawal (Rewari district) constituencies as BSP nominees. Mr Yadav said he had joined the HVP as per the wishes of the people of his area. Mr Surender Singh, who was here to welcome the two BSP leaders, said Mr Surender Yadav, son of a popular leader from Mahendergarh district, Mr Duleep Singh, had also joined the party. Mr Surender Singh said the Congress was HVP’s main rival. However, he emphasised that the Congress was a house divided and the party had lost its base. With regards to the INLD, he said it had come to power on the basis of “false” promises. The masses were feeling cheated by the INLD leadership and a number of leaders of the INLD were bidding time to desert the party. According to observers, it is a well-thought-out strategy by the HVP camp to project itself as the main rival of the Congress. By doing so, it hopes to entice disgruntled elements, especially from the Jat community into its fold. The general trend is that whenever there is confusion among the Jat community, which would like to strengthen its hold on the levers of power, it gravitates towards the INLD. In a possible situation where the HVP would appear to steal the show from the INLD, the non-Jat voters could be veered round it. The HVP would appear to be the only entity which could defeat the INLD, considered to be not to popular in urban belts and among the non-Jat sections of society. In this political callisthenics, the HVP’s apparent grand plan is twofold: to be one up on the Congress, which is also angling to bounce back into power, and erode the credibility of the INLD and its government. |
Governor’s remark irks politicians Gurgaon, May 6 The remark apparently caused several red faces among politicians present at the occasion. The Governor lauded the concept of non-violence propounded by Lord
Mahavira. He said all religious leaders and social reformers taught the same things. They advocated harmony, equality and respect for individuals. The Governor inaugurated a vaccination campaign against hepatitis-B launched by a public charitable trust called “Mahaveer Navchetna Vinyas”. The managing trustee of trust, Mr Rupesh Jain said his organisation had decided to fight against killer disease. It had adopted 26 villages and colonies in and around Gurgaon to eradicate the disease. Its target was to vaccinate one lakh people of the area by the end of April. The trust had also decided to make this vaccine affordable at Rs 50 per adult and Rs 25 per child below 10 as against the market price of Rs 300 and Rs 150, respectively. There were plans to provide the vaccine free of cost to students in government primary schools. Mr Jain said the trust’s dispensary at Daultabad road would provide the vaccine six days a week. Also, weekly camps would be organised in the adopted areas. In order to raise finances for the vaccination campaign, the trust on the occasion brought out a coloured sticker on Lord Mahavira. The stickers are priced at Rs 500 per packet of 1008 stickers. It also brought out letterheads with pictures of Lord Mahavira and a logo on his preachings. The cost of letterheads is fixed at Rs 200 per packet of 100 sheets. |

Labour unrest growing in Sonepat Sonepat, May 6 Mr
S.N. Solanki, president of the Haryana Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions
(CITU) told media persons here today that the workers had adopted go slow tactics in many factories in support of their demands. As a result, the services of a number of workers had been terminated. Some factories had declared lock outs and the
workers had been retrenched. He said no extra payments were being made to the workers who worked overtime in many factories. Even the
compensatory rest had not been given to them. Similarly, the Act providing for paid festival holidays and annual paid holidays had also become a dead letter, he added. He said the provision regarding overtime work and immediate payment for it in cash at double the normal rate was not being implemented in a number of other factories. Mr Solanki opposed the contrast system prevalent in the industrial units and alleged that old workers were being retrenched forcibly and the women workers were being harassed on one pretext or the other. Even they were not being paid the wages in according with the Minimum Wages Act. He alleged that the workers were being forced to work between 12 and 15 hours a day and paid about Rs 1,500 per month instead of Rs. 1964.58 per month under the Minimum Wages Act. The workers, he said, were also being denied the basic amenities and housing accommodation. As a result, they turn up for duty by arranging their own transport. According to Mr Salanki, there were 20,000 skilled and about 50,000 unskilled workers in the industrial units. Moreover, nearly one lakh workers were employed in 250 brick-kilns in the district. Most of them were ‘bandhua mazdoors’ and their children also worked in the brick-kilns which lacked basic facilities. The CITU leader urged the state government to enforce the labour laws strictly employers who were mainly responsible for the unrest. |
Central help sought for Haryana farmers Chandigarh, May 6 Stating this here today the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, said the state government had already started giving compensation to the affected farmers at the rate of Rs 2,000 per acre, but it would meet the cost of inputs only. Mr Chautala, who has himself visited about 40 grain markets to inspect the procurement of wheat, said about 50 lakh tonnes of wheat had been procured till yesterday, which was an all-time high. The procurement agencies would procure about 60 lakh tonnes of wheat this year against 45 lakh tonnes procured last year. He said there was neither a shortage of gunny-bags nor of storage space as the government had already made adequate arrangements. The delay in the arrival of gunny-bags from Kolkata was due to certain mistakes committed by the Railways, but that, too, had been rectified, he added. |
Joint patrolling on Haryana-Delhi border Rohtak, May 6 This was stated by Mr Resham Singh, IG, Rohtak Range, at “meet-the-press” programme organised by the district unit of Haryana Union of Journalists here today. He said nakas would be set up at different entry points from Delhi to various towns of the state for the purpose. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of senior police officials of the two states, he added. The IG said the criminals usually slipped to the neighbouring states after committing the crime in one state. He said several districts of the state neighbouring UP had become favourite hunts for such criminals. He said regular patrolling in the border towns was not easy in view of the large number of such towns and inadequate police staff. However, he said the problem would soon be solved to some extent after setting up of the rapid action force (RAF) in the state. The RAF would be under the direct control of the IG of the range. Answering a question Mr Resham Singh said an analysis of the criminal incidents in the Rohtak range comprising Rohtak, Jhajjar, Sonepat, Panipat and Karnal districts revealed that a majority of criminals were unemployed youths. He said craze for easy money lured these youths into illegal professions. He said the police was keeping a strict vigil on people whose source of income was not commensurate with their elegant life style. Lauding the role of women police stations in the state he said the government had recently sanctioned 275 post of women constables. Commenting on the inter-state scandal of fake registration of stolen vehicles he said the police had recovered 52 stolen vehicles and arrested 16 suspects from different parts of the state so far. More than 250 stolen vehicles were likely to be recovered from Haryana and Delhi after investigations, he added. Orientation courses had been started for police officials to educate them for scientific investigation and to deal with the latest modus operandi of the criminals. |
MC staff stir lacks support Faridabad, May 6 According to sources in the local Municipal Corporation if things go right, many more employees may lose service. The civic body had retrenched about 1519 employees working on daily wage basis recently. Although the retrenched staff is actively involved in staging demonstrations and processions in the town to keep alive the issue, yet due to lack of proper support and sultry heat conditions, the stir has so far failed to make any impact on the State Government. In view of ‘poor’ civic facilities provided by the municipal corporation in the town and nearly similar situation in other municipal councils and committees in the state, the State Government had reportedly drawn up a strategy to ‘privatise’ the services by cutting down the staff strength. Although the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala had ‘enquired’ about the situation prevailing after the recent retrenchment of the staff and the latest plans of the corporation during his last visit here, it is suspected that the government might go for the privatisation of civic amenities services in more towns. The MC authorities here have announced to give the work cleanliness of the eastern parts of the town to ‘Sulab International’ against a budget of Rs 25 lakh per month. It is likely to save Rs 5 lakh per month which was earlier given towards the salary of the staff. Similarly the MC has also floated tenders for running tubewells and look after the work of water supply in the eastern parts. Meanwhile the Sarva Karamchari Sangh, Haryana, and its affiliated body of the Nagar Palika Karamchari Sangh has announced to join hands with ‘retrenched’ MC staff and has threatened to intensify the stir. |
