Terrorist-turned-contract killer arrested
Ludhiana, May 6
While ideologues like Wassan Singh Zaffarwal, one of the former key members of the group spearheading terrorism in the state, are coming back to the main stream, small-time terrorists have started indulging in contract killing, besides their main expertise of robbery and snatching.

11 arhtiyas’ licences cancelled
Ludhiana, May 6
The licences of 11 arhtiyas have been cancelled in the district while 38 other arhtiyas have been issued show-cause notices following a special checking by the district administration officials. In spite of a glut of wheat arrivals in the mandis of the district for the past 12 days, procurement agencies have purchased 6.04 lakh metric tonnes and the procurement process has been going on efficiently.

The Punjab State Electricity Board has failed to remove many poles that stand in the middle of various roads. One such pole in the midst of  the GT Road on the Ludhiana-Jalandhar Highway  has resulted in a number of accidents. But the  board officials have not cared to remove it  despite repeated complaints by residents.

Mr K.R. Lakhanpal, Principal Secretary, Finance, Punjab stated that the state was all set to provide best infrastructural facilities to boost the developmental and industrialisation process of the state, for which funds worth Rs 2,235 crore were being spent on the execution of prestigious developmental projects, including strengthening and widening of most of the main roads, construction of eight new big bridges, railway crossings and buildings of hospitals and schools.

Karl Marx remembered

Karl Marx, the father of Communism, was remembered on the occasion of his birth anniversary by a number of eminent comrades at a function held here yesterday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bharat Parkash, a veteran Communist leader, said changes in the human society had occurred due to the hard labour of the mankind and not due to any divine force.

Dyeing units pollute with impunity
Ludhiana, May 6
The dyeing units, which are the backbone of Ludhiana’s knitwear, woolen and cotton garment industry, have failed to change with time. The dyeing industry in the city is leading to water and air pollution and has failed to upgrade its plants despite pressure from public and administration. The Pollution Control Board has failed miserably to fulfil its duty in this regard.

Residents seek bus stand
Khamano, May 6
Nearly 50,000 villagers of this town and nearby villages are eagerly awaiting for Mr Parkash Singh Badal’s sangat darshan to be held on May 8 here. Among other things, the villagers expect the Chief Minister to announce the construction of new bus stand for this historical town.

‘Political parties need to mend ways’

Students of the Institute of New Media and Corporate Communication, Delhi, along with their teacher, Prof Avinash Singh, were in Ludhiana to assess the popularity and preference of the people of Punjab for various political parties. The survey was a part of their practical studies. The students were to cover 13 Parliamentary constituencies of Punjab with the help of a special performa to find out the political preferences of the people.

Students of College of Basic Sciences and Humanities presented a colourful cultural programme as part of the annual function of the college yesterday evening.
The programme titled “Jashn-e-baharan” was full of colour, music, and dance. It comprised various folk and solo dance performances. A hilarious skit based on the life of a hostler also created a lot of mirth. A well choreographed ‘Dharti Punjab di’, depicted the barbarism of the English on Indians till Partition.

Sports hall spruced up for National Games
Ludhiana, May 6
With the announcement of the schedule for the National Games, the construction work at the Multipurpose Hall in Guru Nanak Dev Stadium has picked up. The games will be held here from September 18 to 29 for which the Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana wants to complete the work before June 15.

Harminder wins chess gold
Ludhiana, May 6
Harminder Singh clinched gold in the District Chess Championship which concluded here today by defeating Daljit Singh in the final round.
