MSP ‘raised’ due to Tehelka expose Fatehabad, March 30 Ms Selja said the Tehelka expose was only a tip of the iceberg and many more skeletons would come out of the cupboard once the NDA government went out of the office. Ms Selja also accused the government of underplaying the Tehelka issue and said it was ignoring the enormity of the situation and trying to divert the public’s attention towards other issues. She said ever since the Tehelka expose had come to the fore, the NDA government at the Centre had been making all efforts to shield those who had been exposed by the Tehelka tapes. She termed the inquiry ordered by the Union Government as a “farce” and said the intentions of the government could be gauged from the fact that even before the probe had been ordered, everyone concerned in the government and the BJP, including the Prime Minister, had been trying to save those whose names had appeared in the Tehelka episode. She said as the main Opposition party in Parliament, the Congress had the duty to see to it that all those who had been named in the tapes and those whose pictures taking bribe from the alleged defence dealers had appeared in the tapes should be booked and put behind the bars. She said there was no need of a probe as there was a documentary evidence against the accused in the form of the videotapes. She said the Congress would continue its agitation against the government till its demand for the arrest of the Tehelka accused was met. Ms Selja demanded that the state government should provide compensation to the farmers whose crops had been damaged by hailstorm on Thursday. Terming the Central as well as the state governments as “anti-farmer”, the former Union Minister said it was only due to the Tehelka revelations that the farmers had been given a hike of Rs 30 per quintal in the minimum support price of wheat. |
Steps to raise
hygiene levels Gurgaon, March 30 The Deputy Commissioner, Gurgaon, Mr Apoorva Kumar Singh, has issued orders to the departments concerned in the context. He is contemplating a monitoring mechanism for an effective check on possible violators. A high-level joint meeting of heads of the departments is on the cards. He told TNS that there was no reason for alarm as the steps were routine precautionary measures. The orders, inter alia, prohibit the sale of cut fruits and other eatables and ice-cream made from untested water and milk. There are many who are cynical about the success of these measures. The powers-that-be have been apathetic to both the posting and workload of Food Inspectors here. In the past the government did not fill all sanctioned posts of Food Inspector. Now the posts have been filled, but the incumbents have been given additional charge of other districts. There is a pressing need for sanctioning additional posts of Food Inspector in view of the exponential growth of the city. The population and habitation areas have increased manifold in the past few years. With the passage of time, many places have become vulnerable to pollution. Umpteen number of vendors can be seen setting up make-shift kiosks. On the one hand, the government is earnestly moving towards giving the Gurgaon Municipal Council the status of Corporation and on the other, it is apathetic to the ground realities, especially with regard to the upkeep of hygiene standards. |
Modern sewerage plant on anvil Ambala, March 30 Topekhana Bazaar will witness a seachange in hygiene and sanitation once the project is implemented. The area is thickly populated with 1,200 dwelling units besides about 1,200 cattle head but there is no sewage disposal system. Sewage flows into open drains and the problem is acute during the monsoons. The Cantonment Executive Officer, Mr S.S. Chahal, said that the proposed project includes the laying of pipelines and installation of a sewage treatment plant. “The sewage line network will cover the entire locality and also cater to the cattle,” he said. Mr Chahal explained that raw effluents from various sources like domestic waste, kitchen and cattle waste will be treated through two phases: pretreatment and post-treatment. In the pre-treatment phase, the effluent passes through raked stainless steel flat screen and enters the grit chamber from where it flows over V-notch stainless steel device for flow measurement. Thereafter, it flows to oil and grease traps and then enters the collection sumps. After this, the effluent will pass on to the post-treatment phase in which effluent is pumped into aeration tanks and then the flow is led to plate settlers. The concentrated sludge is disposed of for off-site solid disposal treatment and taken back to the aeration tank for further treatment, he said. Subsequently, the liquid from the plate settler is disinfected with the help of hypochloride solution and is pumped through multi-grade filter and activated carbon filter. Mr Chahal said that besides the treated water being utilised for gardening and flushing the sewer lines periodically, the dried sludge can be disposed of as manure. |

He was appointed as the Secretary of the Board by the Bansi Lal government on September 4, 1997. However, the Chautala government terminated his services after giving him a month’s salary in lieu of the notice period. The officer challenged his termination in the High Court, alleging that it was politically motivated. The court held that the action of the state government was not tenable under the law as the services of the petitioner had been terminated without following the rules and the order passed was arbitrary and needed to be
quashed. |
