MLA for proper distribution of canal water
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, Dec 31 — The Congress MLA from Tosham, Mr Dharam Vir, has demanded “equal distribution” of canal water in Haryana.

In a statement today, Mr Dharam Vir said that starting from January 7, 21 persons would sit on a 24-hour fast in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office at Bhiwani every day to press this demand.

He said 95 lakh acres of land in Haryana was irrigated by 9,000 cusecs of water obtained by the state from two major canals. While 6000 cusecs, out of a total of 9,000, cusecs were supplied to 32 lakh acres falling in the Narwana, Tohana, Sirsa and Dabwali areas, the remaining 3,000 cusecs were supplied to 63 lakh acres, the MLA alleged .

He added that southern Haryana districts would be further affected by the new rotation plan for canal water supply for these areas being introduced by the government from January 3. While earlier the rotation was eight days’ supply of water followed by 24 days’ stoppage and again followed by eight days’ supply, under the new rotation the stoppage of water was for 32 days for every eight days of supply. This might also result in drinking water shortage in certain areas, Mr Dharam Vir said.

While the state government had cited the lowering of the water level at the Gobind Sagar Dam for starting the new rotation, what was actually needed was equal distribution of canal water between the “privileged” and “deprived” areas, the Congress MLA said.
