Ganguly leads India to 9-wkt win

KANPUR, Dec 11 (PTI) — India made short work of a resurgent Zimbabwe as the hosts’ batsmen clobbered the tourists in a thumping nine-wicket victory to take an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the five-match one-day series here today.

It was Saurav Ganguly’s day at the Green Park stadium as he shone both with the bat and ball to almost single-handedly lead India to a crushing win, leaving the final match at Rajkot a dead rubber.

Ganguly made a brilliant unbeaten 71 to cap his five-wicket haul earlier in the day and put up 157 runs for the opening wicket with Sachin Tendulkar, who scored a fine 62 in India’s blistering run-chase.

Ganguly and Agarkar who took four wickets, had earlier restricted Zimbabwe to a paltry 165 runs in 45.4 overs as the visitors put up a pathetic display after a splendid performance in the last match at Jodhpur.

Zimbabwe bowlers, like their batsmen, had nothing to offer, and Ganguly — the obvious choice for man-of-the-match award, and Tendulkar, engaged in a blitzkreig that saw India reaching the target in just 25 overs.

The Indian skipper’s 68-ball knock was studded with 12 fours and a six while Tendulkar blasted nine fours in his 86-ball innings as the duo set the ground ablaze with some lusty hitting.

The duo hit up their 12th century partnership that left them just three short of the world record of 15 held by West Indians Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes.

This was India’s third straight win at this venue and fifth overall in the eight matches played here.

India started on a calm note and put up 25 runs in the first six overs before Ganguly decided to shift the gears. He smashed four boundaries in Travis Friend’s fourth over, three of them off identical pull shots in the mid-wicket region and the fourth through the covers.

Tendulkar, who struggled with his placings initially, took a cue from his captain and hit Heath Streak for three fours in the bowler’s second over.

That was the beginning of a flurry of boundaries by the Indian duo which sent Zimbabwe bowlers and fielders running for cover.

So demoralised were the Zimbabweans that even the ever-dependable wicket-keeper Andy Flower let go of two boundaries in byes.

India, who took 63 balls for their first fifty, raced to the next in just 34 balls, but Tendulkar and Ganguly were in no mood to relent.

Tendulkar brought up his 50th half-century off 65 balls with the help of eight fours and Ganguly followed him on the milestone — his 35th — off 56 balls that had eight fours and a six off Henry Olonga.

India were 123 in the 20th over and they just had a formality to complete, which they duly did but not before Tendulkar fell leg before wicket to Friend with the score reading 157.

Ganguly, however, remained unnerved and finished the affair in the same over with two boundaries to the third-man fence.

Earlier, Ganguly and Agarkar bowled fiery spells to have Zimbabwe out for 165 after openers Trevor Madondo and Alistair Campbell, both scoring 32 apiece, had given them solid start.

Agarkar started the onslaught by removing Campbell in his fourth over to break the 60-run partnership which was the only substantial stand in Zimbabwe innings.

Campbell was clean bowled while trying to cut an incoming delivery after he had faced 42 balls striking four fours. He was the more attractive of the two as he hit Prasad for three fours and looked set for a big knock before Agarkar profited from an incoming delivery.

In-form Andy Flower joined Madando, but Agarkar, who was breathing fire, trapped the opener leg before wicket before Ganguly took over the proceedings.

It was Ganguly who did the trick with the ball to have his second best figures in a 10-over spell.

Andy Flower was just about settling down and when looking to sweep Ganguly out of the ground only managed to give a simple catch to Agarkar at the mid-wicket fence.

Ganguly dismissed Grant Flower (6) and Stuart Carlisle (20) in identical fashion uprooting their middle-stumps and then had Heath Streak caught by wicket-keeper Vijay Dahiya for three to have Zimbabwe reeling at 142 for seven.

As Ganguly and Agarkar bowled relentlessly from both ends, they were unlucky to be denied some close lbw decisions.

Ganguly in particular was charged up, appealing for almost everything. The 38th over saw three consecutive lbw appeals against Mluleki Nkala being turned down by the umpire.

The lower order did not have enough air in them to resist the fury of Ganguly and Agarkar, and submitted meekly to set an easy target for the Indians.

Notices served on Ganguly, Dahiya

KANPUR, Dec 11 (UNI) — Skipper Sourav Ganguly and stumper Vijay Dahiya may face either suspension or penalty for bringing disrepute to the game of cricket under the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, according to match referee Barry Jarman.

Jarman said both Ganguly and Dahiya were served notices for bringing disrepute to the game, showing dissent to the umpire’s decision and intimidating umpires during the fourth one-dayer between India and Zimbabwe.

“We are discussing the matter threadbare under ICC rule of C2, C3 and C4 and will take a decision accordingly by tomorrow,’’ Jarman told newspersons after the match here today.

When asked about the probability of punishment to be imposed on them, he said: “It could be suspension for some matches or financial penalty.” Sourav and Dahiya were seen showing uncharacteristic postures towards umpires while appealing for wickets thrice.

However, the Indian skipper said he would not say anything as he was not officially aware of such developments while Dahiya was not available for comments.

Jarman said the ICC should take notice of these incidents seriously, which were on the rise during intense encounters in the field, for the good of cricket.

England record historic win

KARACHI, Dec 11 (Reuters) — England won their first series in Pakistan for 38 years today when they crowned an outstanding display on the final day of the third and final Test with a six-wicket victory.

In rapidly fading light, Graham Thorpe and Graeme Hick put on 91 for the fourth wicket before Hick was bowled by Waqar Younis for 40 with just 20 runs needed for victory.

Captain Nasser Hussain, dropped behind the wicket off his first ball, and Thorpe scrambled to victory in near-darkness after Pakistan were repeatedly warned by the umpires for time-wasting.

England, on their first tour of Pakistan for 13 years, finished on 176 for four with Thorpe unbeaten on 64.

“We’ve worked so hard throughout this series, it’s just an amazing end for us. The last hour was chaotic,’’ Thorpe said. “It’s been a real team effort.’’

Michael Atherton, named Man of the Match for his first innings century, called the victory an “incredible achievement’’.

It was only the second Test England had won in Pakistan — the last was in October 1961 — and was the first defeat for Pakistan in Karachi.

Pakistan have now lost their last four series at home.

“It was a tough day for us. I think they exploited the conditions better than us and they deserved to win,’’ said Pakistan captain Moin Khan.

“I think England played really well in this series.’’ England started the day by dismissing the home side, who resumed on 71 for three, for 158 in their second innings — their lowest score against England in Pakistan.

Left arm spinner Ashley Giles and paceman Darren Gough both took three wickets to give England a victory target of 176 at exactly four runs an over. Pakistan had made 405 in their first innings and England 388.

Chopra to be quizzed today

CHENNAI, Dec 11 (UNI) — K. Madhavan, Anti-Corruption Commissioner appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and former CBI joint Director, will question Nikhil Chopra here tomorrow following a direction from the BCCI regarding the Delhi off spinner’s involvement in match-fixing.

It may be recalled that the CBI in its investigation report into the involvement of Indian cricketers in match-fixing had also named Nikhil Chopra.

Announcing this at a press conference, Madhavan said Nikhil will arrive at Chennai tomorrow morning. He would also be examining former Indian captains Kapil Dev and Ajit Wadekar who had also served as national coaches, as per the BCCI’s directive to him.

He said the BCCI had decided to question Kapil Dev and Ajit Wadekar in the wake of the demand made by some members of the BCCI during the emergency general body at Calcutta on November 29 to discuss his report after questioning Azharuddin, Manoj Prabhakar, Nayan Mongia, Ajay Sharma and Dr Ali Irani, the former physio who were all found guilty by the CBI.

Answering questions, Mr Madhavan said he would question Kapil and Wadekar after attending to a few personal commitments and submit his report as early as possible.

He said BCCI President A.C. Muthiah had asked him to expedite the probe regarding Nikhil Chopra’s involvement in match-fixing as he was a member of the present Indian team which was playing against the touring Zimbabwe.

Asked about the reason to probe Kapil Dev and Ajit Wadekar, Madhavan said: “I do not know exactly why. But it may be because of allegations at various levels against the two also.”

The BCCI may have thought it fit to enquire their roles also, if any, he added.

Madhavan said following his probe into CBI’s charge against the BCCI that it had not taken cognisance of reports of match-fixing by Indian players, he had recommended in his own report that the BCCI, if it wishes, can make some systematic changes in its functioning.

“I have made some recommendations in my report,’’ he clarified.

Madhavan condemned Mr Morarka, one of the BCCI vice-presidents and disciplinary committee members critcising the CBI.

“I take exception to his remark that the CBI was more corrupt than cricket,’’ Madhavan said adding that his remarks were “unwarranted and not in good taste.’’

Answering a question, Madhavan said nothing was conveyed to him about alleged differences of opinion within the BCCI regarding the CBI probe report and the punishments meted out the tainted Indian cricketers based on his report.

Anand through to semifinal

NEW DELHI, Dec 11 (UNI) — The lightning kid Viswanathan Anand ensured his reputation did not suffer any severe damage as he annihilated the defending champion Alexander Khalifman to move into the semi-finals of the FIDE Knock Out World Chess Championships here today.

Anand won the first of the 15-minute game tie-breakers and then drew the second to make the celebrations on his 31st birthday more pleasant.

With the other three quarterfinals having been decided and even the lone women’s match over, there was an eerie silence as Anand and Khalifman sat down for the second set of tie-breakers after drawing both the 25-minute games.

In the first of the 15-minute tie-breaker games, Anand had white pieces. Khalifman went in for a Slav defence and it was apparent that the Russian was attempting to surprise the Indian and also test his opening preparations. At the end of it all, he must have realised that Anand was indeed solidly prepared for virtually everything.

After winning the first game which was a Slav defence, Anand drew the second in a spanish opening and ended a hard-fought quarterfinal. He will now meet Michael Adams in the semi-finals beginning tommorrow.

The semi-finals will be of four games.

Earlier Anand was taken into the second set of tie-breakers as the players drew both games in the 25-minute tie-breakers.

In the first of the 15-minute tie-breaker games Anand presented his pawns in an attempt to gain space but at the same time was opening himself for any big surprises.

The top seed was clearly baiting the Russian to take a crack at him. As early as the fifth move, Khalifman got one pawn and then three more on the eighth, ninth and tenth moves. Anand’s centre was virtually bare now, but he took a minor piece in return.

As the game progressed it was clear that Indian had planned for it all. By the 17th move, the queens were also off the board. The 17th move, f6 from Khalifman led to the queen’s going off the board.

That move was also a deviation from what Vassily Ivanchuk and Evgeny Bareev had played earlier this year in a Category 17 tournament. That game had ended in a draw. Khalifman may well have felt that with four pawns for a minor piece he could take chances. And so far he had played rather well with black pieces.

This time around, he miscalculated. Anand later on got two of the pawns back and was strongly placed with his light coloured bishop controlling the h1-a8 diagonal.

Also his rooks ‘c’ and ‘e’ files were looking menacing. When Anand brought his bishop to b7 and threatened black rook on c8, it was all over. Khalifman would have to give both his rooks for one rook and a bishop. That would put Anand a full rook ahead.

Faced with such a situation, Khalifman had no option but to resign after 41 moves.

Earlier in the evening in the women’s section, Xie Jun of China moved past Russian Ekaterina Kovalevskaya to set up an all-China final. Jun won the first game of the 25-minute tie-breaker and drew the second to enter the final.

Yesterday Qin Kanying of China had moved into the final by beating Yugoslav Alisa Maric.

Ricky, Mahajan prop up Punjab
From Our Sports Reporter

ROHTAK, Dec 11 — A knock of 85 runs by Vivek Mahajan and a half century by opener Ravneet Ricky enabled Punjab to raise 276 for seven wickets on the opening day of the North Zone B.C.C.I under-22 cricket tie against Haryana at Maharaja Aggarsain Stadium here today.

After winning the toss, Punjab opted to bat first. Haryana got an early wicket when opener Munish Sharma was dismissed by right arm medium pacer Atul Sekhawat. Munish could score only 4. However, Vivek Mahajan and Ravneet Ricky added 82 runs for the second wicket before Ricky’s dismissal was enacted by Deepak Sain. Ricky scored 55 after facing 111 balls in 138 minutes with the help of nine fours. But the best effort came from Vivek Mahajan’s blade. He hit 10 boundaries to score 85 after facing 151 balls. He lost his wicket when he stepped out to hit Anuj Sharma and missed the line of the ball.

Amit Kakaria and Ankur Sodhi contributed 27 runs each. Sarandeep Singh was batting on 30 and Harikishan Kali on 8 when play stopped today.

Left arm leg spinner Deepak Sain and off spinner Anuj Sharma took three wickets each.

“Forfeit assets” of tainted players

KANPUR, Dec 11 (UNI) — The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s action against tainted cricketers in the match-fixing scandal was “insufficient” and the government must ensure a more stringent punishment to them.

This view emerged during an interaction the UNI had with a cross-section of the crowd which had come to see the fourth one-dayer between India and Zimbabwe here today.

Most of the people were of the opinion that the BCCI action was “insufficient and ineffective’’ and the government should even go to the extent of forfeiting the assets earned by the tainted players from the game of cricket.

The people also dismissed that former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin was dragged into the matter because of his minority origin, calling it “a useless communal twist given to the match-fixing episode.’’

However, a few believed that the BCCI action was enough to give the guilty a lesson.

International women cricket player Reeta Dey, condemning the attempts to give communal twist to the scandal, said the government should become harder and impose penalty against the guilty players.

Ms Dey, however, said the BCCI had its limitations and could not have meted out anything beyond the life ban on players. But the government must enact laws and rules so that the tainted players were subjected to heavy cash penalty for their misdeeds.

She ridiculed the life ban against Azharuddin, saying the he was already 38 and had already achieved what he could from the game. “It was not befitting for a sportsman like Azhar to blame his minority origin for the indictment,’’ she said adding that the Shahi Imam also gave an ugly turn to the situation by wrongly advocating for Azhar.

Former Northern India karate champion and software developer Asheesh Shukla said that by indulging into match-fixing, the players had violated the sportsman’s spirit, therefore, such players should be dealt with as ordinary economic offenders.

Shukla said, “the guilty players had not admitted their involvement in the scandal so far and did not deserve any soft hand.’’

Shukla, also a former state level tennis player, said the government should forefeit the properties of the tainted players, earned through the gentleman’s game (cricket).

Former sports columnist and commentator Ashok Awasthi said that the BCCI’s action was to caution players against the evils of match-fixing and by that point of view, the punishment was “symbolic and sufficient’’.

Pradeep Srivastava, a second year science student of a local college, said the tainted players, who had previously earned praise and affection from the masses, had betrayed the peoples’ faith. Therefore, they should be dealt with a strong hand.

Three school children — Raju Kanojiya, Aman Sharma and Manu Gupta — said the government should attach the properties of the tainted players.

Senior sports reporter Anant Shekhar Mishra said the punishment to the players involved in match-fixing has conveyed the message of discipline among other players.

Senior advocate Sayeed Naqvi said the government should enact a law ensuring that no player could dare breach peoples’ faith.

Mr Naqvi said that no religion preached cheating and one should not blindly support the misdeeds of others merely on caste or creed considerations.

Former MP and BJP leader Ishwar Chandra Gupta supported the BCCI action against the four players. However, he advised the Shahi Imam not to issue irresponsible statements on communal lines.

The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association Secretary Jyoti Bajpai expressed satisfaction over the board’s action.

Bajpai, who also holds the post of joint secretary in the board, said the BCCI action would enable us to wipe off the blot sustained by the clean game of cricket in the wake of the scandal.

Lara finds form with double ton

HOBART, Dec 11 (AFP) — The enigmatic Brian Lara exploded into a double-century of runs today, showing he still has a magic bat but doing little to dispel the mystery of his hamstring injury. Lara, after a string of first-class failures on the Australian tour and despite hurting his shoulder in the course of his innings, smacked 231 for the West Indies against Australia ‘A’.

It was an innings of the highest quality against Australia’s second-string bowling — a feast of audacious stroke play.

Yet this was the player whose hamstring defies specialists’ predictions of rapid cure, whom coach Roger Harper was only hoping would be fit for Friday’s third Test, and was so indisposed yesterday that he didn’t come in until the West Indies were reeling at 80 for five.

Tiger Woods, Duval clinch World Cup

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 11 (AFP) — Tiger Woods and David Duval repelled a late Argentine charge to comfortably win the $ 3 million World Cup for the USA here yesterday.

The home pair of Eduardo Romero and Angel Cabrera briefly got within one shot of the hot favourite Americans when Romera fired an eagle-three at the ninth and the Americans in the following group came up with a rare bogey six.

But with the pressure firmly on, Woods sunk a crunch 25-footer for birdie two at the 10th to put the Americans two in front again and consecutive bogeys for the Argentinians at the 13th and 14th effectively closed out what had become a two-horse race.

The Americans carded a four-under-par 68 for a 34-under par total of 254, three shots clear of Argentina and with Paraguay’s Carlos Franco and Esteban Isasi third a further eight strokes back.

It was the 23rd time that the USA had won the World Cup in the 46 times it has been contested since 1953.

It was a second triumph for Woods after his victory in Malaysia last year with Mark O’Meara and it brought an end to one of the greatest seasons in golfing history in which he won three majors and 11 tour titles in all.

"It was a fantastic week," the 24-year-old Woods said of his first venture into golf in South America.

Woods also paid tribute to Duval’s outstanding form particularly on the greens, saying "My partner bailed me out time and time again. Thank goodness he was out there with that great flat stick."

For Romero, known as El Gato (the cat) and Cabrera known as El Pato (the duck) it was a heartbreak end to a pulsating four days in which they came close to giving Argentina its biggest win in international sport since Diego Maradona lifted the 1986 World Cup.

"After that eagle, that tremendous eagle, we thought we had a chance. We were rellay close to the American team. But I think the mistake was the 14th hole (where they had a bogey six)," said Romero.

The day had started with the USA a handy three strokes clear of both New Zealand and Argentina, the two countries that shared lead after first and second rounds.

But the veteran Kiwis had a disastrous front nine, Frank Nobilo and Greg Turner going out in 41 to fall out of contention and leave Argentina as the sole challengers to the world’s first and fourth ranked players.

For the fourth day thousands of fans made the trip to the Buenos Aires Golf Club, 25 km north of the city to cheer on the two men from Cordoba in the biggest golf tournament yet to be held in South America.

But with the hefty twosome settling for second place, they turned their attentions toward the Americans and especially woods.

Top European team was the Scottish pair of Paul Lawrie and Gary Orr who finished with 70 for a total of 268 and best for Asia was Japan’s Shigeki Murayama and Hidemichi tTanaka with a 68 for 266.

Next year’s World Cup will be held at the Taiheiyo Club in Gotemba, Japan with tour commissioner Tim Finchem saying that the same format is likely to apply with two four-balls and two foursomes.
