Pak crush Windies by 130 runs SHARJAH, Oct 15 (PTI) Young off-spinner Shoaib Malik claimed two vital wickets for 34 runs on debut as Pakistan crushed West Indies by 130 runs in the second league match of the Tri-Nation Cricket Tournament here last night. Chasing a massive target of 261 without the assuring middle-order presence of Jimmy Adams who did not bat due to a teller ligament tear after bowling 10 balls West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals against some tight bowling by the Pakistanis and were bundled out for 130 runs off 34.4 overs at the Sharjah stadium here. The Caribbeans lost skipper Brian Lara (8) cheaply for the second match in a row as the left-hander went for a flashy drive off Wasim Akram and edged behind to wicket-keeper Moin Khan and were reduced to 45 for two when Wavell Hinds (13) failed to keep down a drive off Azhar Mahmood (1/24) and gave a simple catch to Aamir Sohail at point. Lara, who smashed the second fastest one-day century off 45 balls against Bangladesh last week, lofted Akram (1/15) over covers for a boundary but was out the next ball as he went for an extravagant drive. Shivnarine Chanderpaul was run out by Hasan Raza going for a second run as West Indies slumped to 58 for three in 17 overs and never recovered from that. The 17-year-old Malik, who started his limited overs career with a maiden over, then struck two vital blows to take the wind out of the West Indies sail. Malik trapped the other opener Sherwin Campbell in front of the wicket as the batsman tried to sweep across the line, reducing West Indies to 79 for four. The youngster, picked up for the tournament in place of Saqlain Mushtaq, who is recovering from a knee operation, then removed the dangerous Ricardo Powell as the 20-year-old Jamaican tried to take control of the match. Powell, on whom rested the West Indian hopes for an unlikely victory, was looking to dominate the bowling with his run-a-ball knock. He lofted Malik out of the ground for a huge six and also struck him for a boundary as he helped his team cross the 100-run mark in the 26th over in the company of Ridley Jacobs (16 n.o) before Malik got his revenge. He lured Powell out of the crease for a mighty heave and then fired the ball towards the leg side for Moin Khan to complete a neat stumping and West Indies were reduced to 114-5 in the 28th over. Young speedster Abdur Razzaq (2/26), who shared the new ball with skipper Akram, then hastened the West Indian demise as he claimed two wickets off successive balls. He had Nehemiah Perry (3) caught by Akram in the first over of his second spell and then trapped Nixon Mclean (0) leg before off the next ball. Pakistan: S Anwar c Lara b McLean

Zimbabwe defy to put on 194 HARARE, Oct 15 (AFP) Australia bowled out Zimbabwe for 194 on the first day of their one-off cricket Test here and in reply were six without loss at close. But Zimbabwe showed resilience against the pace of Damien Fleming and Glenn McGrath and the guile of Shane Warne after collapsing to 37 for four in the first hour. Neil Johnson caused some consternation in the Australian ranks with an innings of 75 that mixed defiant defence and flashing stroke play. He found willing partners in Andy Flower, with whom he put on 70 for the fifth wicket and in Guy Whittall in a partnership worth 40. Johnson batted over four hours, hitting eight fours and a straight six off Warne while letting loose with tail-enders as partners. Flower looked unsettled against a mix of pace and spin but he nevertheless put together an innings of 28. Whittall was more aggressive and was going well before edging a nick to Healy behind the stumps. Otherwise it was decidedly Australias day. Zimbabwe (1st

Paes, Bhupathi pull out of Singapore Open SINGAPORE, Oct 15 (PTI) The top team of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi yesterday pulled out of the doubles event of the Singapore Open Tennis Tournament citing injury to the latter. Bhupathi had pulled a hamstring muscle in the first round of the Shanghai Open last week in China and is yet to recover from it. ATP today announced their withdrawal from the event saying Bhupathi was not feeling fully comfortable to play. Following the injury, Bhupathi pulled out of singles event in which he and Paes both had received wildcard entry. Jasjeet lifts Samarvir Sahi
Trophy CHANDIGARH, Oct 15 Jasjeet Singh of Noida, lifted the second Samarvir Sahi Chandigarh Open Amateur Golf Trophy keeping a step ahead of the strongly finishing Harjinder Singh Kang and outstripping overnight leader Sandy Lehal through a brilliant display of golfing temperament and talent, here today. Playing with the leader Sandy Lehal and Saurabh Bahuguna, Jasjeet Singh showed great maturity in keeping to the business of making pars from the beginning and letting the competition falter. His first bogey, through A 3 putt, on the par-5, seventh hole was immediately remedied by a birdie on the next hole and he was playing level par at the turn. By this time Sandy Lehal had dropped three shots and was trailing by one and the championship had become a near match-play tussle between the two. Scrambling for,and making pars where he did not hit regulations, Jasjeet dropped his first shot of the back nine on the three-par 14th as his tee shot found a difficult line in the green side bunker. Sandy had just made a birdie on the 13th and had hopes of catching up again when Jasjeet pulled his second shot on the difficult par-4 15th on to the 16th tee, but a brilliantly executed lob to within 3 feet of the pin saw him hang on to his thin lead. Then on the par 5, 16th again, from a difficult approach Jasjeet made a fantastic shot to the pin to grab a birdie and a stranglehold on the championship. As Sandy dropped another shot where he might have made a birdie. By the time they reached the 18th Jasjeet could take his bogey and the championship with a smile. Harjinder Singh Kang of the PSEB, playing the best round of the tournament, a 2 under par 70, today came to within a hair of upsetting Jasjeets cart, but left his charge too late and his excellent birdies on 12th, 13th and 17th were not enough to help him win. But he did manage to pip Sandy Lehal and finish second. In a jubilant mood Jasjeet Singh, the young assistant trainee with Gas Authority of India, told the Press, he was thrilled to win his first amateur title and beat his brother Simarjeet Singh. At the prize distribution ceremony Mr GPS Sahi, IAS, gave away the prizes for the championship held annually in the memory of his son Samarvir Singh Sahi, who , a top class golfer himself , was lost to this world at a very young age. The final scores:
Jasjeet Singh 297, Harjinder S Kang 299, Sandy Lehal 300,
Simmerjit Singh 301, Saurabh Bahugana 304, Suleiman Ali
305, Suman Puri 306, Gurbaaz Mann 306, sheeraz kalra 309,
and Anitya Chand 310. |
Punjab cops, PSB in final MUMBAI, Oct 15 (UNI) Inside-left Daljit Singh Dhillons hat-trick, including the golden goal took Punjab Police today on the threshold of the title in the Bombay gold Cup Hockey Championship here. The police men won a titanic battle of nerves in the second minute of the golden goal periods second half upstaging the more glamorous Air-India of Mumbai 3-2 after a full time of 2-2 in the second semifinal. In the first semifinal Punjab and Sind Bank, the team in crackling form, ousted another local team with more stars, Bharat Petroleum, 4-1. The defeats highlighted how much the local teams had missed big time hockey in past five years. Punjab Police have been a thorn for all teams since winning the cup in 1959. PSB should be looking for the revenge final as it was in the 1988 finals that they lost to the police men. Both the northern sides jolted the goodly partisan crowds by taking lead in the very second minute of the game. A fine run of Baljit Bhullar gave Dhillon a wonderful view of the goal and he did not miss. But Sarbjit Singh put pressure on the police men by showing dissent and kicking the ball only to be sent out. This folly poked a big hole on the right and surely enough Air-India plugged it in the 30th minute after putting tremendous pressure on goalie Roshan Lal. The latter had made two grand reflex action saves from Len Aiyappa and veteran Edward Aranha. Then came a superb show of understanding between Deepak Thakur and Gagan Ajit Singh culminating in goal from the latter. Soon after resumption the police men tricked the Air-India defence to take lead. Jagdev posed to take the second short corner out of the five but allowed the ball to roll to Balwant Singh. Balwant pushed the ball to Dhillon and he again netted. Air-India again relied on tireless Thakur who grabbed a forward pass in the circle to level the score. The golden goal also came off the short corner. The ball was passed on to Dhillon who scooped home. The first semifinal between Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) and Bharat Petroleum fizzled into a one-sided affair with the former taking 2-0 lead in the first six minutes. Baljit Singh Chandi first grabbed a long ball from Rajinder and again demonstrated his golf-like drive for the first goal. In the sixth minute Sandeep Ghuman essayed a free hit a foot away from the circle. Bhupinder Hayer diverted the speeding ball for the goal. Sabu Varkey gave similar treatment to the ball off Ram Saran in the 21st minute to give some hope for the local team. But it lay in tatters soon. Vikramjit Kaka deftly stopped a hit from 25 years and Prasad flicked for the third goal. Within the start of
second half Bharat Petroleum had given up when Harpreet
Channy, who had just replaced intemperate Sarabjit,
designed his own goal with a slight help from Bhupinder. |
