Clinton rings up Vajpayee
WASHINGTON, Oct 15 (AFP) — US President Bill Clinton spoke over the telephone today with Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, addressing the Pakistan situation and nuclear proliferation issues, White House spokesman Joe Lockhart said.

NHRC commendations
NEW DELHI, Oct 15 (PTI) — National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah today presented commendation certificates to 14 officers of the commission's investigating division. He complimented the officers for outstanding work in the promotion of human rights and culture.

Nilofer in IT net
NEW DELHI, Oct 15 (UNI) — Well-known beautician Shahnaz Hussain's daughter Nilofer Currimbhoy is in the income tax net. She made her appearance today in the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate M.K. Gupta in connection with an income tax related case. The hearing was adjourned to April 12.

Shyamrao Kadam
NANDED, Oct 15 (PTI) — Former Maharashtra minister Shyamrao Kadam, who spearheaded the cooperative movement for over four decades, died here this morning. He was 80. The seniormost Congress leader of Marathwada, Kadam was recipient of Padmashree, awarded to him for his sterling contribution to the growth of the cooperative movement. Kadam headed Khadi Gramodyog for three decades and also served as the president of the Nanded Zila Parishad for nearly four terms.

‘Durga Bhabhi’ dead
NEW DELHI, Oct 15 (UNI) — Veteran freedom fighter Durga Devi Vohra, who gave a stiff challenge to the British regime along with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru, died here last night after a protracted illness. She was 92. She is survived by her son Shachindra Vohra. Mrs Vohra, also famous as 'Durga Bhabhi' among freedom fighters, was cremated on the banks of Hindon river this morning with full state honours. District Magistrate of Ghaziabad Alok Kumar laid a wreath on behalf of the state government.

Bal Thackeray
MUMBAI, Oct 15 (PTI) — A local court today directed Mr Bal Thackeray, Shiv Sena chief and Editor of party's mouthpiece Saamna, to appear in person on October 29 in connection with a defamation case filed against him by Samajwadi Party's city unit chief Abu Asim Azmi and two more. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A.A.A. Kidwai issued the directive on a complainant that Mr Thackeray was "deliberately" trying to avoid appearing before the court.

Firing at cafe
MUMBAI, Oct 15 (PTI) — Some unidentified persons opened fire at the newly opened "Music Cafe" owned by Kishan Kumar, brother of the late music baron Gulshan Kumar, at Bandra here today. However, no one was injured. The miscreants fired two rounds at the cafe's entrance before fleeing from the scene.
