BATHINDA
Demanded:
The residents of Goniana Mandi, 14 km from here, have urged the Chief General Manager (Telecom), Punjab, to reduce the monthly rent for a telephone from Rs 180 to Rs 100. In a letter to him, Mr Pawan Jindal, President, Lions Club, pointed out that the telephone exchange of the town had 1,400 lines whereas the Jaitu telephone exchange had 2,000 lines and the monthly rent being charged there was Rs 100 per month.

Women's education: Mr S.R. Ladhar, Deputy Commissioner, said on Friday that people should contribute their mite to promote education for women for the better progress of the country. Addressing a function after inaugurating a 10-day NSS camp at Guru Nanak Khalsa Girls College here, he said only educated women could work for the welfare of society and achieve success in their lives. Mr Ladhar also inaugurated a computer centre at the college and said job-oriented education was more productive in this scientific era.

FEROZEPORE
Camp:
A training camp for farmers was held at Town Hall here on Thursday. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Gurdev Singh Sidhu, inaugurated the camp. During the camp, experts of Punjab Agricultural University apprised the farmers about effective methods of farming, soil testing and protection of crops from diseases.

Dharna: The district unit of the INTUC will stage a dharna outside the Labour Office here on October 20 in connection with their demands, which include fixation of a minimum wage of Rs 4,000 and release of bonus to the Punjab Government employees.

Small savings collections: The Director of Small Savings, Punjab, Mr Vinod Kumar Bhalla, has said that collections under various small savings schemes during 1998-99 in the state were to the tune of about Rs 2,050 crore. Talking to reporters here on Thursday, he said during the current financial year a target of Rs 2,500 crore had been fixed.

GURDASPUR
Arrested:
A police naka party at Simble Chowk here apprehended Bhupinder Singh and Parveen on Thursday who were involved in 17 cases of theft at Nurpur in Himachal Pradesh and Pathankot in Punjab. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, the accused confessed to having stolen a scooter, a gold chain and a locket at Pathankot. They also admitted their involvement in three cases of theft at Nurpur. A case has been registered.

Protest: The PSEB Engineers Association and junior engineers of the local circle held a joint rally on Thursday at Batala to protest against the apathy of the Batala police in arresting the culprits involved in manhandling. Mr R.L. Vashist, Senior Executive Engineer posted at Batala, and staging a dharna at his residence.

Polio vaccination drive: All arrangements to administer polio drops on October 24 to children in the age group of up to 5 years have been finalised. According to Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, 3.5 lakh children have been identified for the programme. As many as 1,852 pulse polio camps will be held, which will cover most areas in the district. Fortyone mobile teams will be on duty to administer polio drops at isolated places, including brick-kilns and labour colonies.

HOSHIARPUR
Arrested:
The Mehtiana police on Thursday arrested two members of an inter-state gang involved in the theft of vehicles. It also recovered a stolen scooter from them. Mr R.R. Mittal, SSP, said here on Friday that this gang was active in the Hoshiarpur, Phagwara and Delhi areas. The two arrested were identified as Gurdip Singh, son of Amrik Singh of Madhopur village, and Manmohan Singh, son of Onkar Singh of Dhandal. On interrogation, the police recovered three more stolen scooters from them.

NARNAUL
Resentment:
There is much resentment among the District Bar Association members here over a decision of the Haryana Government, reported in a section of the Press, to transfer more than 17 villages of the Satnali area (Mahendragrah subdivision) to Bhiwani district. Inhabitants of Mahendragarh district want that status quo should be maintained in the event of reorganisation of the district.

NAWANSHAHR
Death anniversary:
A 'shradhanjali samaroh' to pay tributes to Gian Singh, a Victoria Cross winner, on his third death anniversary will be organised at his native Shahabpur village, about 10 km from here, on October 24. Giving this information here on Wednesday, Mr Resham Singh, Senior Vice-president of the district unit of the SAD, said Mr Parkash Singh Badal would participate in the function.

Burn injuries:
Asha Rani (28) Gagriwala village in the district received serious burn injuries at her home on Tuesday while she was preparing tea. She was admitted to the Civil Hospital here where her condition was stated to be stable.

Arrested: Om Parkash of Mandi Dabwali in Haryana and Chander Singh of Bhadra in Rajasthan were arrested by the Dabwali police on Tuesday for smuggling opium. The police recovered 2 kg of opium from them which was being carried in a jeep.

Theft: Mander Singh of Dadu village in district was arrested by the police on Tuesday on a charge of theft. The police recovered gold ornaments from him, which were allegedly stolen by the accused from the house of Baga Singh of Dadu village on September 30. A case has been registered under Sections 454 and 380 of the IPC.

Fake currency: Karni Singh of the local J.J. Colony was arrested by the police here on Tuesday on the charge of cheating. Mr K.K. Misra, Superintendent of Police, said the accused had purchased liquor from a liquor vend and had given fake currency for Rs 100.

Held for gambling: Lilu Ram of Mandi Kalanwali, Dev Raj of Khairpur and two others were arrested on Tuesday by the police here under the Gambling Act. The police recovered a large sum from their possession.

New Deputy Commissioner: Mr Amit Jha took over as the Deputy Commissioner here on Tuesday in place of Dr Avtar Singh, who has been transferred as Secretary, Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam, Panchkula. Mr D.D. Gautam has been appointed as Additional Deputy Commissioner in place of Ms Nirja Shekher.

Blood donation: The sixth mega blood donation camp was held on Friday at the Sector 35-D market. The camp was organised by the Lions and Lioness Club of Panchkula Central in collaboration with the Chandigarh Blood Donors Council and the Lions Club Kansal. About 103 units of blood was collected.

Elected: The following have been elected the office-bearers of the Central Excise (Gazetted) Executive Officers' Association: President — Mr Ishwar Singh; Vice-Presidents — Mr Kartar Singh, Mr Ashwani Kapoor and Mr V.K. Fire incidents:
Two incidents of fire were reported from the township on Friday. According to the information available, a fire broke in the wild growth behind Milk Plant in Phase 6 and another near Forest Office here. Firefighters from the local station rushed to the spot to control the fire.

Awareness programme: A one-day awareness programme on implementation of total quality management was organised at Verka Milk Plant here on Friday. The Managing Director of MILKFED, Mr Amrik Singh, inaugurated the programme. He said though the plant had achieved ISO 9002 and IS 15000 HACCP certifications, there was a need to effectively implement total quality management. He stressed the need for giving training in quality management to each employee.

REWARI
Record business:
Gurgaon Gramin Bank's business has reached an all-time high of Rs 593 crore by the end of September. The bank earned an operating profit of Rs 8.61 crore during the first half of the current financial year. This was stated here by Mr S.N. Bhat, Chairman of the bank.

SIRSA
Assault:
Mr Charanpal Singh and his companion were injured near Badagudha village when Sukhdev Singh, former member of the SS Board, Haryana, allegedly made a murderous assault on them when they were travelling by a Maruti car. They were hospitalised and were stated to be out of danger. Old enmity was stated to be the cause for the assault.

Stolen: A Maruti car belonging to Mr Vinod Kunjal was stolen from outside his house in the Bank Colony here on Wednesday. According to sources, about six vehicles have been stolen from the city during the past month.

Murdered: Telu Ram of Sherpura village in the district was murdered with sharp-edged weapons by five miscreants at his village on Thursday. According to sources, old enmity was the cause of the murder.

ROHTAK
Convicted:
The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr M.S. Bullar, has sentenced a Patwari, Jaiparkash, to three years’ imprisonment and fined him Rs 5,000. He was caught red-handed by the Haryana State Vigilance Bureau while accepting an illegal gratification of Rs 700 in a land fraud case.
