Cultural Scene
Kishore songs with ‘sur & taal’
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Oct 15, — The second northern region Kishore Kumar award competition was held at Tagore Theater, Chandigarh, on his 12th death anniversary on October 13. It was organised by the Majlis Journalists and Artists' Association (MJAA).

Singers responded overwhelmingly from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh. Thirteen singers were shortlisted for the final competition after two preliminary rounds.

From the level of competition it was quite apparent that there is abundant untapped talent which just needs some platform to unfold. Majority of the singers, who competed with youthful exuberance, were already learning Indian classical music. It was a treat to listen to young singers with complete control on "sur" and "taal". The organisation also made it clear that the purpose of holding the competition was not to judge whether a singer's voice resembled that of Kishore. "The basic idea was to provide a platform on which talented singers could prove their calibre", the organisers announced appropriately.

The judges were Brijesh Ahuja, Ranjana, Atul Sharma and Neera Bhatnagar, well-know singers. In fact, both Brijesh and Ranjana, rendered soulful numbers like "Koi Ham-dam Na Raha" and "Rasik — Balma Haie."

Singers were asked to sing difficult compositions selected by the organisers, namely, "Kabhi Bekasi Ne Mara", "Voh sham Kuch Ajeeb Thi". "Koi Lauta De Mere Bite Hue Din". "Yeh Jo Mohabbat hai". "Chala Jata Hun" etc.

The first prize of Rs 5,100, sponsored by CITCO, was won by a 'fauji': Madan Thakur Thapa. The two bracketed second prizes, sponosred by 'Khyber Restaurant' and 'Teji Studio'were bagged by Rajiv Menon and Harpreet Singh. The two bracketed third prizes, sponosred by "Oakland Stationery' and MJAA were given to Ajay Bakshi and Muktesh Dewan. Six singers were given appreciation certificates. The six were Neeraj Bakshi, Rajesh Randhawa, Bijan Nath, Jitendra, Vijay Tikku and Sharvan Kumar.

The programme was compered and directed by Ms Reeta Sharma. Actors and actresses broke the monotony on song after song by presenting crisp thrillers. They succeeded in making the audience laugh their heart out. Sanjay Sharma, Ajay Kaushal, Rupan, Satinder, Jai and Mukesh gave the comic relief.

The chief guest, Mr Chandan Mitra, Editor, The Pioneer and the special guests of the evening, Mr H.S. Mattewal, Advocate-General of Punjab, and Mrs Maninder K. Mattewal, member, Punjab Human Rights Commission, gave away the prizes to the winners.
