Heavy deployment of police
around Subash
Ghat
Haridwar, November 19 As All India Sikh Conference had called on Sikhs to observe
''Parkash utsava'' at Subash Ghat today, which is just a few metres away
from the controversial site of Bharat Scouts and Guides camp office,
which conference leaders claim to be an erstwhile gurdwara till the
1970s. The situation remained tense at Subash Ghat. The police had made
elaborate security arrangements and close monitoring was done on Sikhs
entering the city. From the watch tower and CCTV, round-the-clock vigil
was kept on the whole situation to ensure no one entered Subash Ghat. Superintendent
of City Police Surjeet Singh Pawar said that heavy barricading and
deployment of security personnel was done at Subash Ghat area, as there
was no permission granted by the administration to Sikh organisations to
organise a religious function at the Ganga ghat. The city police chief
added that in the wake of sensitivity of the issue, the Sikh
organisation was not granted to permission to hold any religious
function or meeting at the place. ''Sikhs devotees, who want to take a
holy Ganga dip or want to visit Har-ki-Pauri, are not prohibited. It is
just that those who want to hold a meeting or religious function at the
said area can't do so, as it can disturb the harmony and peace of the
city.'' No one will be allowed to break the law as some organisations
have claimed that they will forcibly hold the function at Subash Ghat. Meanwhile,
Sant Baba Baljeet Singh Daduwal and his followers tried to reach Subash
Ghat but were stopped from doing so by police personnel at the very
ashrams and lodges they were staying. Last week only three dozen
Daduwal supporters had given symbolic arrest as a mark of protest,
regarding prohibition of offering rituals at the Bharat Scouts Camp
guide office, which Sikhs claim was a gurdwara decades ago. Meanwhile,
Gyan
Godri Gurdwara Sangharsh Samiti representative Baljeet Singh has urged
district administration to grant them permission to hold religious
functions at the said Gyan Godri Gurdwara building, near Subash Ghat. He
also rejected the offer of the administration to provide them with
alternative land near Prem Nagar ashram ghat ,Ranipur, to construct Gyan
Godri Gurdwara. |

Appeal to preserve nation’s historical monuments
Dehradun, November 19 ''There is not a single monument that is not free of graffiti and defaced. It is time that we took a pledge as strong as our religious belief in protection of these monuments,'' said Rao while delivering
a keynote address to mark the celebration of Heritage Week held here today at the Archaeology Survey
of India (ASI), Science Branch. He said: ''Visitors from abroad travel far and wide ''in our country and never fail to admire our monuments and heritage sites for their architectural beauty. But we behave irresponsibly by defacing our monuments. Only a strong oath and sense of admiration for our own past could helps us protect our monuments,'' he said. On the other hand, Vineet K Dikshit, Associate Professor and Head Department of History, DAV College, said that ''we have to thank the archaeologists for managing
to decipher the Brahmi script and other rock inscriptions, which ultimately laid the foundations for the discovery of our heritage.'' While welcoming the guests, KS Rana, Director, Science, said that monuments and heritage sties left by ''our ancestors are more than buildings.'' ''These buildings are springs of history, which have to be passed from one generation to another,'' he said. He said that that the Heritage Week will provide an opportunity to the people to explore their history and learn its importance. Dr Atul Bhargava Superintendent, Archaeology, Dehradun Circle, said that the globalised world was posing a challenge to the protection of monuments. A similar function was also held at Khalanga by the Dehradun Circle of ASI. A photo exhibition was also put on display highlighting the work undertaken by the Science Branch of ASI towards
the restoration and conservation of the Kedarnath temple.

Interview with Ajay
Bhatt, Leader of Opposition
Dehradun, November 19 “One may have thought that the Congress-led government would brace itself to the onerous task of rebuilding the devastated parts of the state, but even in the aftermath of the disaster the functioning of the state has not improved. It has been able to spend only 40 to 45 per cent of the plan budget. This is when the state has seen a natural disaster,” said Bhatt while speaking with The Tribune. Worried that the scourge of migration from rural areas may become serious, Bhatt, who recently undertook the Char Dham yatra, said state ministers were shunning villagers. They were not ready to travel by road to see for themselves the condition of the people and their problems. “I am afraid migration may take a serious turn if the Chief Minister and his ministers continue to shut their eyes to the problems of the people,” he said. On the issue of the construction of Legislative Assembly buildings at Gairsain in Chamoli district and at Raipur in Dehradun, Bhatt said the government should have resolved the issue by first identifying and designating a place as the permanent capital of Uttarakhand as Dehradun continues to be interim capital. “The flippancy of the government becomes all too visible when it makes announcements about constructing not one but two Legislative Assembly buildings without resolving the issue of the capital,” he said. Bhatt has been vociferous in condemning the Congress-led government both in and outside the Legislative Assembly regarding the tardy rehabilitation work in the aftermath of the mid-June disaster. “The government seems to be speaking in many voices even on the issue of removal of skeletons still buried underneath the rubble in Kedarnath. It should speak in one voice so that there is no confusion on the issue because it had at one time claimed that the area had been cleared of skeletons. But when former Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and I visited the devastated Kedarnath area on October 28, we saw skeletons lying at a few distance from the temple,” he said.

Stone of new House: Govt on back foot
Dehradun, November 19 The government some time ago had announced amid fanfare about its announcement of creating two new Assembly buildings in the state, one at Gaisain and other at Dehradun. While foundation stone ceremony for Gairsain was laid some time back, foundation stone for the new Dehradun Assembly building slated to take place yesterday was postponed. Interestingly, the state government alleges that there is delay in forest clearance on the Raipur land where the new Dehradun Assembly building is to come up and thus foundation stone has been delayed. However, sources reveal that the state government has became cautious after parties like Uttarakhand Kranti Dal and other organisations had announced to oppose construction of Assembly building in Dehradun. There is strong opinion among state agitationists that any effort towards making new Assembly building in Dehradun means giving a sort of permanent capital status to Dehradun and even a large number of MLAs criss-crossing political lines are opposed to this. On the other hand, forest authorities when contacted asserted that forest clearance for the Raipur land, where Assembly building is to come up was in the process. They assert that forest clearance was a long drawn process and takes time. It is noteworthy that any forest land to be used for non-forest activities has to be given clearance from Union Ministry of Environment and forests.
