Family seeks release of kin from Nigeria prison

Family members of Gagan Kumar (29), have came under the grip of severe shock when they came to know about the latter, who went to Dubai about a year ago, has been languishing along with 10 other Indian prisoners in a Nigeria jail these days for the past 10 months.

Gagan's father Bachan Lal of the local Model Town area said they came to know about the same on October 27, 2013, when their son contacted them from the jail through phone for getting him released.

Gagan's mother Parvesh Rani, wife Sapna and other family members burst into tears after getting the news.

Bachan told that he had visited residence of Avinash Rai Khanna, Rajya Sabha MP, to take his help to get released all imprisoned Indians along with his son from the Nigeria jail. But Khanna was in Jammu. He had told Khanna about the matter. Khanna assured them that he would leave no stone unturned to get them released as early as possible.

Bachan, who is running a Dhaba near a local government college, said Gagan went to Dubai on October 15, 2012, and was employed in Wasir Shipping Ink Al Hanoria Company. He went to South Africa to board the ship of the said company.

He along with his companion, Sarabjot Singh, son of Sewa Singh of Kahnuwan (Gurdaspur) and nine other Indians were arrested on the charge of stealing oil.

Khanna said the matter was brought in his notice yesterday. He would take up the issue with the Union Foreign Ministry at the earliest to get released all Indians languishing in Nigeria jail.
