Implement Lokayukta Act or face stir: AAP
Tribune News Service

Dehradun October 30
Activists of the Aam Admi Party (AAP) demonstrated in front of the office of the District Magistrate here today demanding enforcement of Lokayukta Act in its original format.

Convener of the party Harish Arya said, "Despite the signature of the President of the country on the Bill on September 3, Lokayuka has not been given his rights. There is a provision that the Act will come into force within 180 days of getting the approval from the Governor.

He said after the implementation of the Act, the state government was supposed to issue a public notice whereby it would constitute a Lokayukta who would work independent of any administrative, financial or work related control of the state government. But it was surprising that the Bahuguna Government had buried the file related to Lokayukta even after obtaining the signature of the President.

Arya said if the state government did not give rights to Lokayukta as per the Act, then it would have to go through the entire rigmarole of getting it cleared on the floor of the House with two-third majority and obtain the approval of the Governor once again. He said his party demanded due rights to be given to Lokayukta or else the party activists would launch an agitation.

As Diwali nears, traffic scenario turns from bad to worse
Tribune News Service

Dehradun October 30
With the festival of Diwali round the corner and frequent traffic jams becoming the order of the day, the already wayward traffic scenario in Dehradun is turning from bad to worse.

In view of the festive season, the policemen on duty are finding it difficult to manage the increasing number of vehicles on the roads of the state capital as people are moving around the city more often than they normally do.

The increasing flow of vehicles on the city roads is resulting in frequent traffic snarls, especially near shopping malls and markets.

The police says it is geared up to deal with the situation. “Every circle officer (CO) has been directed to take stock of the traffic situation on a continuous basis in their jurisdictional areas and ensure smooth flow of traffic on roads”, SP City Jagdish Chandra told The Tribune.

But one could witness traffic problems at many places, including Paltan Bazaar, Gandhi Road, Arhat Bazaar, Dharampur, Haridwar Road, Ballupur Chowk and the ISBT chowk.

“It’s a nightmarish feeling to drive on the city roads these days, especially during evening hours, as most of the times I get stranded in the traffic jam and end up wasting time waiting for the queues of vehicles to clear”, said Simran Kaur.

“Lack of parking lots in the city is leading to more chaos because people are forced to park their vehicles on the road sides causing more trouble for others”, said Samta Bahadur, a resident of Aman Vihar. “We have directed the police station force as well to come on the roads to streamline traffic during the festive season so that people experience minimum inconvenience,” said the SP City.
