Devotees clean Ganga canal, ghats in closure period
Haridwar, October 19 The activists are cleaning the canal of filth, polythene, garbage and other materials daily. Volunteers of the Teerth Maryada Raksha Samiti and the Small-Scale Trader Association today carried out the Ganga cleaning drive at the Birla Ghat. Led by the representative of the traders, Sanjay Chopra, the volunteers cleared filth and garbage at Birla ghat. Local people too pitched in to clean the holy river and ghats. Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Yuva Teerth Purohit Mahasabha carried out the clean Ganga drive at Har-ki-Pauri, Malviya Deep ,Kangda ghat and the Pantdweep mela zone. Teerth purohit Ujjwal Pundit urged the people to not put religious items and clothes in holy Ganga river. Ward councillor Har-ki-Pauri Kanhaiya Khewadiya also joined in the clean Ganga ghat drive. Sikh women cleaned the Prem Nagar Ashram ghat near Ranipur. Shantikunj Akhil Bharatiya Gayatri Parivar activists will be carrying out mass cleaning drive at Har-ki-Pauri and other adjacent ghats tomorrow. |
Haridwar residents launch dengue awareness drive
Haridwar, October 19 Residents, under the aegis of a social outfit, namely Rashtriya Krantikari Manch, are identifying vulnerable pockets in the city. Led by social activist Ambrish Kumar, they are roaming around the city generating awareness about the virus. At the Chandracharya intersection at Ranipur, Ambrish Kumar urged people to take precautionary measures as dengue has affected more than 700 persons in the past two months in Haridwar. Ambrish Kumar accused the Mayor, local BJP legislators, namely Madan Kaushik, Aadesh Chauhan, Chandrasekhar Bhattelwala, Swami Yatishwaranand and Congress MP from Haridwar Harish Rawat, of not playing a proactive role in carrying out efforts to check the spread of the menace. "Referring dengue patients to Dehradun, Rishikesh or nearby hospitals is all what government hospitals in Haridwar are doing. There are no preventive measures in place. The health department, the civic body, the district administration and political representatives have failed to check its spread," he said. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party, the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal and a religious outfit, Teerth Maryada Raksha Samiti, have also blamed the district administration, the civic authorities and the health department for ignoring the problem. |
Stone of new dist court complex to be laid today
Dehradun, October 19 Addressing the media here today, Surendra Pundeer, president of the Dehradun Bar Association, said the space of present court complex on the court road was inadequate and the new complex would have parking space for 1,000 vehicles. All judicial buildings, along with tribunals, would be shifted to the new complex. The new court complex will be constructed on the lines of the Saket District Court in Delhi and the same architect has been hired to build the new complex, said Pundeer. The state has allotted the old prison premises, located on the Haridwar Road for the new district court. |
Temple land grabbing: Both parties file cross complaints
Dehradun, October 19 Jaya Baluni, CO, Mussoorie, reached the spot with the police and pacified them. A scuffle was reported on October 13 between two families on the issue of land grabbing in which a woman blamed the members of other family of trying to kill her by strangulating her. The matter reached to the SSP after which the police arrested the men of both families who were involved in the brawl. Today, members of one family were demanding the arrest of the woman who tried to manhandle them on October 13. Both parties also filed cross complaints against each other. Both families live in the same campus where a temple is situated. A dispute is going on between them on the ownership issue. |
78th founder’s day celebrations at Doon School Tribune News Service
Dehradun, October 19 Addressing the students on the 78th founder’s day celebrations at the school, the former Air Chief Marshal, who was the chief guest on the occasion, exhorted students not to abandon hard work for moments of glory that may not last. “Your glory lies in routine work, that may at times seem boring but would lead you to achieve greater heights,” said the former Air Marshal. He exhorted the students to touch the sky with glory, the motto of the Indian Air Force, which had never failed to inspire throughout his chequered career. Chairman, Board of Governors, Gautam Thapar, also threw light on the activities of the school and the way forward. Earlier, Headmaster of the school, Dr Peter McLaughlin, welcomed the guests at the Rose Bowl comprising AICC President Sonia Gandhi, Vice-President, AICC, Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi along with her husband Robert Wadra. The other guests included Union State Minister for Home Affairs RPN Singh, Union Minister of State for Power Jyotiraditya Scindia and former students of the Doon School. Due to the presence of the high profile guests, elaborate arrangements were made by the security agencies. The function ended with a musical concert Nadpravah, presented by the Doon School Orchestra and Choir. National convention on ayurveda begins at Rishikul college
Haridwar, October 19 The seminar was being hosted by the Post Graduate Department of Panchkarma, Rishikul Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Haridwar, and the Department of Ayush, Uttarakhand Government, in collaboration with the National Academy of Panchkarma and Research Paper (NAPA), Uttarakhand. Dr Arun Kumar Tripathi, principal, Rishikul Ayurvedic College, pointed that ayurveda had gained prominence all over the world. He said the western countries were opting for ayurvedic treatment at the cost of allopathic. "Ayurveda has no side impact or repercussions. This ancient Indian therapy has gained global acceptance," added Tripathi. Dr DN Sharma, former principal, Rishikul College, raised the misuse of ayurvedic treatment like panchkarma therapy, being advertised by majority of massage centres to woo the potential customers. "We also need to generate awareness and keep a tab on such spa centres who are earning profit by advertising themselves as ayurvedic oriented centres. But, in reality they are just raking in money and befooling people," said Sharma. Dr S Farooq, representative, Himalayan Drugs Company, said panchkarma ayurvedic therapy had become favourite among the foreigners and due to its immense benefit, costly allopathic treatment was being replaced by the ancient natural medical practise. Research scholars from different parts of the nation are also attending the seminar in which research papers would also be read out. |

President’s visit hits traffic
Mussoorie, October 19 The area around the LBSNAA gate and the Dalai Hill was cordoned off completely with the heavy deployment of police force. The residents and even the school children were restricted from entering the Zero point toward the LBSNAA gates, till the President's presence at the academy. The shops around the area were shut down by the police due to security reasons. Many residents had to wait for several hours to reach their homes due to the restrictions on the movement of traffic. The normalcy returned only after the President left for the Jolly Grant Airport from the polo ground at around 3:1O pm. |

Waste Warriors to hold competition on cleanliness
Dehradun, October 19 The NGO has asked schools to participate and make the programme a grand success. The opening date of the competition is October 20 and the last date to submit entries is November 11. Two of the winning designs chosen from the entries will be displayed on hoardings on Rajpur Road. Waste Warriors has also extended an invitation to schools, offering to do presentations, show videos about their work on the environment, conduct interactive educational sessions, evaluate school waste management systems and conduct waste workshops. Jodie Underhill, CEO and co-founder of Waste Warriors, said, “Rajpur Road has turned into a dumping ground. Many illegal vendors have come up in the area. We are finding it difficult to clean it. We hope that hoardings designed by young students will spread the important message of ‘stop littering - keep the city clean’. |

DPS are north zone school cricket champions
Haridwar, October 19 On reaching here today, at DPS Ranipur school campus, the winning team contingent was given a warm welcome by thevschool staff and students. Welcoming the winning team school principal Dr KC Pandey said the meticulous and hard work pitched in by each player, team coach and supporting staff had resulted in Ranipur wing becoming the North Zone champion. Pandey added that school management is trying its level best to ensure best of the playing facilities to the students in the school. Veteran cricketer and secretary of Haridwar Cricket Association Inder Mohan Barthwal congratulated the DPS Ranipur team on their major achivement. Barhtwal said the recent laid state of the art cricketing facility and pitches in the school cricket stadium had been instrumental in achieving this mega victory. "Haridwar players were better off their opposition teams in acclimatising to varied pitches like spinning, bouncy and seaming. Owing to this high class training facility at school ground itself, we hope more such victories in near future too" said Barthwal. Pratap section lift trophy in RIMC athletics meet
Dehradun, October 19 In an epic finale, the Pratap section needed to win the 4x400m race to lift the trophy. And that was exactly what Cadets Md Salman, Akash, Nelson and Akshat did. In a record timing of 3 minutes and 42 seconds, they brought the cup home for their section. Valuable contributions from Cadets Pratik Jadhav, Shikhar Singh, Amul Rawal, Aryan Ahluwalia, Lalit Kumar, Hemant Poonia, Louizink, Raghav Vaid and Anil Kumar tremendously helped them in lifting the cup. The Pratap section finished with 236 points, closely followed by Shivaji at 230. Ranjit and Chandragupta sections fought for the third position, with Ranjit securing it with 167 points, Chandragupta finished last with 163. It marked the end of one of the most keenly contested Inter-Section Athletics Meet held at RIMC. Cadets Shashank Shekhar, Saurabh Shukla, Vijay Choudhry, Rishi Pangeijam, Adarsh Parmar, L Sailo, Sohail Islam, Sameer Ansari, Kush Kumar, Aurobindo Mishra, Sachin Kumar and Vijayant Rana performed excellently for their sections. The Individual prizes won by the cadets are as follows: Best athletes (A Div): Cadet Sameer Ansari, (B Div): Cadet Pratik Jadhav, (C Div): Cadet Shashank Shekhar and O Nelson Singh. Heritage, Hilton make it to Inter-Council School Junior Boys basketball finals
Dehradun, October 19 In the first semifinal match, Hilton School defeated Shiwalik International School by 43-6 score. Hilton school took an infallible lead in the first quarter after scoring 15 points with conceding mere 2 points. In the second quarter, Hilton scored 8 points whereas, Shiwalik managed to score 4 points. In the 3rd and the final quarters, Hiton scored 12 and 8 points respectively and Shiwalik failed to score even a single point. In a one-sided encounter, The Heritage School thrashed GRD School by 27-2 score. In the first three quarters, the GRD team could not score a single point whereas, Heritage School scored 6, 8 and 7points respectively. In the last quarter, The Heritage School had put 6 baskets and the GRD only scored 2 baskets. The final match between the two semifinal winners would be played on Monday. |

Dehradun, October 19 Laxman scored the first goal for Shiwalik at 12th minute with Anurag scoring another goal at 25th minute. Bhupendra stuck double blow at 33rd and 36th minutes for Shiwalik. Nitin and Manish netted a goal each at 45th and 48th minute respectively. Adil scored the lone goal for Vikasnagar at 13th minute of the match. Dehradun, October 19 Saraswati Vidhyamandir won the toss and choose to bat first. They scored 96 runs in their innings. Naval of Vidhyamandir scored 29 runs. Sai Grace chased down the target at the loss of 2 wickets. From Sai Grace, Rajat scored 61 runs on 44 balls and won the match for his team. In the second match between The Doon Global and Roots International, the Doon Global School took to batting first and scored 123 runs in the end. Roots International had a bad start as both the openers got out without making much runs on the board. The team was bowled out at 88 runs and lost the match by 35 runs. |
