Police vehicles grounded
Bathinda, October 10 The delay in payment of the amount has prompted the petrol pump owners to stop refuelling police vehicles, including bikes and four wheelers. The dealers said they have to deposit the payment to oil companies in advance and could not further afford giving oil on credit basis. The police department managed to carry on without funds for the past around four months but the rising debt created a sense of insecurity among the fuel station owners. “As per a rough estimate, police vehicles in the city areas guzzle fuel worth nearly Rs 50,000 in a day. During VIP duties or festive season, extra fuel worth Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 is purchased,” said District Petroleum Dealers Association president Subhash Kumar. Ravi Verma, who has a petrol pump in front of the Police Lines, claimed that most of the police debts were due to him, nearly Rs 25 lakh. Other petrol pumps have an outstanding of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. “I started offering fuel on credit as the officials had assured that payment against bills would be released soon. I stopped when the dues reached the Rs 25 lakh figure,” Verma said. Petrol pump owners said apart from payment of Rs 50 lakh due to petrol stations in the city, there were petrol pumps in the nearby towns of Talwandi Sabo, Rampura Phul, Maur Mandi, Goniana and Sangat Mandi which too failed to get their dues cleared for the past five months. Meanwhile, policemen deployed with PCRs and in the control room continue to face embarrassing situations as they receive calls which required them to go to spots. Cops have to think twice before starting their vehicles. Pleading anonymity, policemen disclosed that neither the PCR Toyota Tavera nor the motorbikes have fuel to run. Some policemen claimed that they were spending from their own pockets to refill official vehicles to attend to emergency situations. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ravcharan Brar, when contacted, said the problem was being faced in all districts of the state and it would be sorted out as soon as funds were released by the government. |
Security stepped up as Maisarkhana fest gets going
Bathinda, October 10 Maisarkhana village is famous for a temple where a big fair is organised during Navratras. Devotees in large numbers turn up at the village to pay obeisance during the three-day festival due to which the vehicular traffic on the entire 30-km route from Bathinda to Maisarkhana grows manifold. Though Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ravcharan Brar denied shifting of PCR cops, who were recently deployed at 25 points in the city, a visit to the points today revealed that most of them were without policemen. Also, traffic policemen were noticed not at their respective duty points in the city in the evening. Pleading anonymity, a senior cop admitted that more than 15 PCR cops, traffic policemen, most of the policemen from police stations and even the office staff were shifted to Maisarkhana, around 30 km from Bathinda, in view of a huge rush of devotees there. Admitting that the functioning of the police stations has been affected, the policeman said a separate force was the need of the hour to manage such events. "Since the grand fest is organised twice a year and preparations have already been done in this regard by the organisers, the police too should have spared force for the event," said another senior police functionary, wishing not toe be identified. People from all walks of life from Punjab, Haryana and neighboring states pay obeisance at Maisarkhana temple during the three-day festival. Leaders of various political parties and people from every religion visit the place of worship during the fest. The SSP said he would enquire about the missing PCR cops from their duty and would ensure that they should present at their respective points so that they were easily accessible to residents. |
