Faridkot, October 4
A scam involving fake certificates to get admission to nursing and paramedical colleges of Punjab has come to light following the cancellation of admission of over 40 students by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS).

The scandal came to light after the BFUHS sent the class X and XII certificates of some suspected candidates to the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Rajasthan Education Board (REB), Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh School Education Boards for verification.

The verification report of over 40 certificates established these to be fake and as a result, the university has cancelled the candidature of these students in different nursing and paramedical colleges across the state. The verification report of many other dubious certificates is still awaited, revealed sources in the medical university.

After cancelling the registration of these students, the BFUHS has already conveyed to the medical colleges concerned that these students should be expelled.

Sources in the university revealed that the BFUHS has returned all documents and certificates of these students but retained the fake certificates. The university is contemplating legal action against the these students to dig out from where they got these fake certificates and who helped them in getting these certificates.

It is not only in nursing and paramedical courses that the students used the fake certificates to get admission. Even a BDS student in a dental college was expelled after cancelling his admission for using fake certificate of class XII.

Interestingly, among the students who used fake certificates to get admission in nursing and paramedical courses in Punjab, the numberof girls outnumber the boys.

While some of the certificate, detected by BFUHS, were of fake universities and school education boards, other fake certificates were of reputed school education boards in the country.

"The university is contemplating legal action against the accused to know about the source of these fake certificates," said Dr SS Gill, vice-chancellor, BFUHS.

Meanwhile, some activists allegedly smashed a windowpane of the gate. The DC summoned additional police force to tackle any untoward incident.

The CPI workers were protesting against inflation, unemployment and corruption as a part of the state-level "Jail Bharo" movement initiated by the state unit of the CPI.

Police took 165 members, including 17 women, into police custody. They have been booked under section 107 and 151 of the Criminal Procedure Code. They would be produced before the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) later on.

On a call given by the state unit of the CPI, the members of the district unit of Fazilka, staged a protest and offered to court arrest at district headquarters against the problems of inflation, corruption and unemployment in the state. Hans Raj Golden, district secretary, who led the agitation, alleged that the state and central governments have failed on all issues relating to the common man. The agitating members also demanded implementation of the Food Security Act in Punjab.

Deputy Commissioner, Fazilka, Dr Basant Garg, condemned the incident and said an inquiry has been ordered into the matter.
