85 police outreach centres to be set up
: The Punjab Government is all set to establish 85 police outreach centres at a cost of Rs 8.5 crore to speed up delivery of police services at people’s doorstep. SK Sharma, Additional Director General of Police, HRD & CP, and Punjab, said this at a meeting organised to review the working of the Saanjh Kendra in the state.

1.04 lakh tonnes of paddy procured: Various government agencies and private millers had procured more than 1,04,242 tonnes of paddy across Punjab till last evening, a spokesperson said. While government agencies have procured 47,522 tonnes of paddy (45.6%), the share of private traders is 56,715 tonnes (54.4%). Till yesterday evening, Pungrain had procured 25,586 tonnes (53.8%) of paddy, Markfed 10,233 tonnes (21.5%), Punsup 5,449 tonnes (11.6%) and Punjab State Warehouse Corporation 1,398 tonnes (2.9%).

165 agitating CPI workers arrested
: As many as 165 Communist Party of India (CPI) activists were arrested when they tried to storm the office of Deputy Commissioner Dr Basant Garg here on Friday. The CPI workers were protesting against inflation, unemployment and corruption at the district headquarters as part of the party’s state-level “Jail Bharo” movement.

Acid attack on 50-yr-old woman: Two motorcycle-borne youths allegedly threw an acid over a 50-year-old woman while she was returning from a gurdwara at Waryam Nagar here on Friday. The incident is being seen as an act of revenge by miscreants against whom the victim, Jatinder Kaur, had raised an alarm in a suspected snatching bid two days ago. The victim has suffered deep burns on the left side of her face, head and arm.

Union to observe strike:
The NRHM Employees' Union, Punjab, has decided to go on a pen-down strike on October 7. In a press note, Avtar Singh, state president of the union, said the NRHM employees had served the Health Department with lot of dedication, but their demands were not being fulfilled since long.
