Woman murdered at Bachint Nagar
Jalandhar, August 23 Gurjit Kaur (45) was all alone at her house when the incident occurred. Her body was found to be lying in a pool of blood by her younger son Raman, when he came home around 1 pm. The woman had multiple stab injuries in the neck, forehead and face. She was also attacked with a baseball bat, also taken from home. Gurjit's husband is working in a paint store at Dana Mandi and remains away from home till late evening. Her two sons aged 22 and 19 years are working with private companies. The SHO, Division No 1 police station, Balbir Singh, said a neighbour of Gurjit had seen a youth knocking the door around noon and did not know what happened later. "Nothing in the house was stolen by the assailant and everything was intact. In fact, the family has a hand-to-mouth existence, so the motive clearly was not robbery," said the SHO. The ADCP-I, Naresh Dogra, ADCP (Crime) Harpreet Singh Mander and ACP Balkar Singh went to the spot. There are several houses of labourers around, but the investigating officials believe that had anyone from among them come with a wrong intention, he would have carried along his own weapon, which was not the case. On the complaint of the deceased's husband, a case has been registered under Section 302 of the IPC against unknown persons. On a tip-off from the neighbours, the police is also investigating on the line of some extra-marital relationship. |
Parents protest against Abadpura govt schools’ merger
Jalandhar, August 23 While as many as 15 schools across 19 blocks of the district are all set to be merged and have caused outrage among most of the schools' staff members, students and their parents, the fiercest protests today were witnessed at Government Primary School (girls), Abadpura, situated in Gali no 5 of the area. About 50 parents from the school today protested at the school against the decision of the merger of schools. The school (girls), running from 1940s is all set to be merged with Government Primary School (coeducation), a move which parents of the girls' school strongly objected to. Unsafe surroundings, greater distance of the school from their homes, lack of facilities (water, fans, etc) and the shift from only girls' education to coeducation were some of the prime factors which triggered the protests. Sunita, chairman of the School Managing Committee, who has three daughters of her studying in Class I, II and III, said, "We can't send our children to that school. It has no fans and there are no proper drinking supply facility either. That school has been ridden with trouble of addicts and garbage accumulation. We will prefer to keep our wards home than sending them there." Budhnath, father of three daughters studying in the girls' school, said, "More than 100 children from ours and the neighbouring streets go to the present school. It is also not coed, so its suits us. That is very far from here. We won't let the merger happen." Some speculate that as the girls' school has 121 students, the coed schools (which houses both the primary and middle schools) won't be able to house so many children either as they are already running classes in verandahs there. Area councillor Bipan Kumar said, "The parents were comfortable and safe in the present area, so there is no reason their wards should be forcibly shifted." The only factor which favours the shifting is that both the schools are within a radius of 1 km. Meanwhile, the Government Teachers Union, Punjab, also strongly condemned the decision today. The union's press secretary Ganesh Bhagat and vice-president Baljit Singh Kular today said the merger of schools would reduce the chances of promotions of some of the head teachers presently expecting it. They said on one the hand the mergers would create surplus posts of primary teachers and on the other hand in some schools, two head teachers would be forced to work together, which would be practically inconvenient for both the teachers. Union members said the displacement of a school by even a km affected poor children adversely and the project might even cause many children to drop out. Union members said the union would be forced to resort to a stir if the government did not take back its decision. |

City to have own air ambulance soon
Jalandhar, August 23 A project, worth Rs 50 crore, has been conceptualised by a city-based NGO and will be executed with the help of World Health Organisation (WHO) and few NRIs from the region. It will provide cost-effective speedy evacuation of patients during medical emergencies to other metros in India and abroad. The service will also evacuate the destitute free of cost during extreme emergency. “We will first start the service on hiring basis. For the air ambulance to be based in the city requires a huge infrastructure like maintenance staff and hanger, etc, so we are planning to get some funds from the WHO also for the project, which will be the first of its kind in the state. We are also tying up with the Air Force authorities for their initial support in providing us hanger and maintenance work for the proposed city air ambulance,” said Surinder Saini, Director, Jalandhar Welfare Society. He added that the main aim of the project was to make the ultra-modern medical facilities in the city available to the entire state of Punjab. “In later stages, we are planning to park two more city ambulances in Amritsar and Chandigarh also so that the people from that area and the NRIs coming to the international airports of these cities can directly be flown to Jalandhar for treatment. It will also help in improving the economy of the city to a greater extent,” he added. Although, seven aircraft based in Delhi and Bangalore are already operating in the city as air ambulance. But they are not being preferred by the medical fraternity here as a lot of precious time is being wasted in their arrival and then taking necessary permission from the Air Force authorities at the Adampur Air Force Station. Also, since the air strip closes at 5.30 in the evening, no evacuation is possible after this time. According to Dr ASM Paul, Mission Control Director of Air Ambulance Aviations, who had flown Delhi rape victim to Singapore last year, it will take at least 1 hour 10 minutes for any aircraft to reach Adampur from Delhi. Nevertheless, the costs of these air ambulances are so high that majority of the patients cannot afford this facility. Many precious lives have been lost in the past sometimes due to the delay in arriving of these aircraft or due to their non-affordable cost. Due to this, a need is being felt for the last so many years to have the city’s own air ambulance facility which should be cost effective and readily available. “Although, Jalandhar has the largest hospital network in Asia with all kinds of treatment available, still there are a few cases like acute liver failure or severe cardiac arrest where a patient has to be evacuated immediately to bigger hospitals in Delhi or abroad. Above all, sometimes our affluent patients themselves want to get treated in Delhi only,” informed SPS Grover, president of the Nursing Home Association of Jalandhar. Around 300 odd hospitals are presently operating in the city, which is catering to the medical need of the people from Doaba region. Also, since the cost of treatment is very high in foreign countries, the beginning of this service will provide a direct connectivity to the NRIs settled abroad to make use of the ultra-modern and cost-effective treatment in the city, hence boosting the economy of the state. |
MC team finds injured cattle at gaushala
Jalandhar, August 23
Dying, malnourished cows; dried water troughs, empty fodder troughs and number of injured cattle, languishing due to lack of food as well as medical care made Bhatia upset. He was accompanied by a Congress leader Rajinder Beri and a team of MC officials and doctors. It is pertinent to mention that while the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued directions to the MC to take necessary action regarding the issue on July 11, Bhatia visited the first (Tanda Road) gaushala on August 10 (The Tribune had carried a detailed report in the issue of August 9 and on subsequent dates). The hearing regarding this case was held on August 14, in which the MC had been asked to submit a detailed report on the issue by September 24. Despite all these and even the constitution of an MC committee to look into the issue, the Pinjra Pol Committee did not even bother to ensure a presence of a doctor at the site - leave alone greater changes to ensure the well-being of the hapless animals. Carcasses of dead animals lay in fodder troughs, moss ridden water troughs hadn’t been cleaned and empty fodder troughs lay untouched as the cattle licked the walls to find a trace of food or water. The heights of indifference even in the face of media, authorities’ and court pressure, speak volumes about the committee’s perpetual disregard to laws and the well-being of the animals assigned to its care. Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Bhatia said, “While the arrangements at the enclosures near the entry points of the gaushala were found to be good, the eventual bigger enclosures were in a very bad state. Lack of fodder, skeletal animals- many on the verge of death - absence of doctors or any management members as well as too little labour, was found. Cleanliness arrangements were not there and clearly the management has been showing complete disregard to the health of animals.” “While the next meeting on the issue will be held on Thursday, we shall summon doctors, the deputy director, animal husbandry, as well as other parties concerned. Strict action will be initiated against erring parties. However, before reaching to a conclusion, we will have to hear what the management says”, Bhatia added. The HC, on August 14, has asked the MC to submit a report on the issue by September 24. The senior deputy mayor said a detailed report, taking into account all factors, will be submitted by then. Meanwhile, in view of the sewerage problem, due to which the cattle at the Tanda Road gaushala had to languish in damp sludgy enclosures, the MC today also started work on fixing the sewerage connection near the gaushala. |

The SHO, Division Number 7 and ACP Manpreet Singh reached the spot. The ACP said since the complaint came to him late in the evening, he could not cross check the case with the woman constable. "They go off at 6 pm. Only after I will talk to her in the morning, shall I be able to comment on the issue", he said. Bus stand hawkers stage dharna
Two groups of hawkers clashed outside the bus stand police post. Members of a group sat down in front of the post with their buckets full of saleable snacks seeking action against the other.
