Recruitment racket busted
Jalandhar, August 12 "Our head office today got a query on the basis of the advertisement that appeared. They sounded us an alert and we immediately swung into action. After doing some preliminary inquiries at our end, we immediately got a complaint lodged with the Police Commissioner," said deputy excise and taxation commissioner Sarojini Gautam Sharda. The advertisement reads, "Permanent government job in the sales
tax department for the post of Tax Collection Assistants, qualification Plus Two, salary 18,000 per month, age 18-40 years, last date for applying August 27." The officials have said the insertions appeared twice through a Mohali-based advertising agency, once on August 6 and then on August 9, with three mobile phone numbers printed for those seeking more details. Sharda said she asked her staff to call on the given numbers in the advertisement. "The respondent on the other side told my staff (acting as an interested candidate) that his address be given so that a person could come and collect biodata from his place. He was also told to pay up Rs 300 for this extra facility," she revealed. Assistant excise and taxation commissioner-I Paramjit Singh, who has submitted the complaint, has sought an investigation into the matter by the police so that the gullible youth are not misled. He has mentioned that the advertisement had appeared on behalf of one Sujan Singh, a resident of Phase 11, Sector 65, Mohali. Police Commissioner Gaurav Yadav could not be contacted. Fake advertisements in papers
An agency had last week twice given insertions in two vernacular dailies regarding regular appointment of class XII qualified tax collection assistants for a monthly salary of Rs 18,000. Officials of the excise and taxation department said they were in for a surprise when they got to hear about advertisements having appeared, as the department currently had no plans to conduct any recruitment |
Safai Karamcharis defer their stir till Sept 12
Jalandhar, August 12 Union representatives postponed their agitation for one month after their meeting with the Local Bodies Minister at Circuit House in Jalandhar on Sunday. Chief Parliamentary Secretary KD Bhandari, Local Bodies principal secretary Ashok Gupta and Mayor Sunil Jyoti were also present at a meeting in this regard. Talking to The Tribune, general secretary of the TWU Sham Lal said Bhagat Chunni Lal and Ashok Gupta told them they would take up the matter of solid waste project with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and till then, it would not install it at Jalandhar and other cities where it was yet to be set up. Sham Lal said the unions not only demanded the solid waste project should not be installed in Jalandhar and other cities of Punjab and its functioning should be stopped with immediate effect where it had already been set up in Ludhiana, Amritsar and Bathinda cities. Earlier, the unions threatened to restart their indefinite state-level strike from August 12 after the breakdown of their talks with Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal held in Chandigarh on August 9. The safai karamcharis had earlier held a one-day strike on August 1 but they deferred their strike till August 12 following an assurance given to them by Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) for Cooperation KD Bhandari of arranging their meeting with Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal regarding their demands. Bhandari, accompanied by Mayor Sunil Jyoti, and senior deputy mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia assured the safai karamcharis during their state-level rally at Company Bagh against the setting up of solid waste management projects in all major cities of Punjab. |
Infrastructure, systemic flaws hamper functioning of govt vets
Jalandhar, August 12 While the hideous treatment meted out to cattle on the Tanda Road and Bulandpur Gaushalas had yet again brought the working of government or hired vets under question, interestingly, the only entity to provide treatment to the hapless cattle at the gaushala was yet again the PFA’s humble little unit at the police lines. Despite the presence of 76 animal husbandry vets in the district, a majority of the stray and/or domesticated injured animals make way to the PFA. While the PFA is the unofficial veterinary treatment destination for any kind of stray animals found with grievous injuries, the NGO is not even being provided with any sort of government help and funds and continues to run with government money. In the past one month, eight injured cattle from the gaushala have been sent to the PFA. The number of cattle making way through the year was much more. With the MC’s dog sterilisation project lying suspended, the PFA also is the only unit in the district to ensure sterilsation for stray dogs in the district (except the occasional do-gooder). A government vet, on condition of anonymity, said, “While there are 76 veterinary doctors in the district, strays or domestic, injured animals, even those brought to us, finally make way to the PFA. Many government doctors are unwilling to take cases. We are also an overburdened lot, who are mostly carrying out either election duties or filling out forms for schemes which have nothing to do with veterinary functions.” In most of the government vet clinics, doctors have only one or two support staff. In general, the clinics are small and lack proper infrastructure. Sources said at places, government vets were directing visitors through a tiring process of conducting various costly tests on animals or charging hefty fees to drive them away. The over 1,400 cattle at the Tanda and Bulandpur gauhalas, also, were left to the care of a doctor with a pharmacy diploma and a couple of government doctors who hardly ever visited the place. Dr JK Chopra, senior veterinary officer of the animals husbandry department, however, said, “As allocated we regularly carry out vaccination campaigns and door-to-door checking of animals in the areas allocated to us. The MC and gaushala authorities had regularly been calling us to aid treatment of the gaushala animals and we had been regularly providing them as well.” However, PFA head Chander Bushan said, “We have been getting malnourished and injured animals for the gaushala and it always comes to us when treatment has to be provided to them.” Bhushan also said mostly doctors’ work was confined to prescribing medicines, while animals languished due to malnourishment and medicines did not work. “Sensitisation in an animal-friendly approach is what doctors and the public need most of all. Meanwhile, we continue to do our work.” |

Municipal Corporation office grapples with power woes
Jalandhar, August 12 Due to the less load sanctioned than the actual requirement, the problem of voltage fluctuation is routine in the MC office. On many occasions, the voltage problem aggravates so much that power has to be switched off on an entire floor. Notably, there are four floors in the MC office, but the offices of the civic staff are on the first, second and third floor only. "In order to ensure that at least the electrical appliances on two floors work properly, the power supply on one of the floors is switched off. This leads to a lot of troubles," said a civic official. Notably, at the time of inauguration of the new MC building in the year 2009, the corporation authorities got a load of 492 kw sanctioned for the entire office block. Later, the authorities noticed that the actual load requirement to run all electrical appliances was about 1,200 mw. "We do not have money to pay even for the security for applying for load augmentation. When we have our revenue generation system in place, we will be able to apply for the additional load," said a senior official. Meanwhile, the civic staff inside the power house of the corporation building is a harassed lot due to the absence of fire-safety equipment in a room. The civic staff sits under risky conditions inside a small room with two transformers, three generators and entire main switch panel running through the wires. "There is no fire-safety equipment inside the room. No rubber mats are provided to us to save us from electric shock," said the MC staff. Despite repeated attempts, the Municipal Commissioner was not available for comments. Fund crunch
The sanctioned power load in the corporation head office was 492 KW against the actual requirement of 1200 KW. But due to fund crunch, the civic authorities have not got the load increased from Punjab State Power Corporation Limited. Due to the less load sanctioned than the actual requirement, the problem of voltage fluctuation is routine in the office |

He said the set started giving trouble to him due to some malfunction in its operating system. He said without any command it used to restart thereby causing loss of valuable time, network problem and low battery problems. The said defect caused a lot of inconvenience and the complainant was made to put unwarranted efforts to operate it. Just two days after the purchase, the complainant approached the dealer and apprised him about the defect. He said the dealer did not bother to accede to his request and tried to evade the complainant on one pretext or the other and told the complainant that the worker who can inspect the problem was on leave, so he should come after February 28. He again approached the dealer on March 1 and was told to go to the authorised service centre of the company. He was told that the company had a policy to replace the handset if it gives problem in the first week of purchase. The staff at the service centre assured him of necessary repairs with an assurance to get delivery of the set within few days. When the complainant approached the centre next day, the concerned staff told the complainant that the handset of such series was having some inherent manufacturing defect in the electronic circuit and was flooded with numerous complaints of the buyers and it could not be repaired. On March 26, the complainant received an SMS that the set had been repaired and was ready to be delivered. He said when he reached the office again to take delivery he was told that it was still having some inherent defects and would take few more days. The forum observed that from the evidence given by the complainant, it stands proven that the mobile hand set sold to him was defective. It accepted the complaint and directed the company to refund the price of the mobile set Rs 4,400 along with Rs.1,500 as compensation and litigation expenses. |

Visual documentaries were also shown to the audience. The Colostrums (thick milk secreted after delivery) is very important for the newborn and has the capacity to fight with diarrhea, pneumonia and other diseases.
