NRI’s wife murdered at Gulmarg Colony
Jalandhar, August 20 The police has found strangulation marks around her neck. The police said the women seemed to be strangled with some wire, like those of cell phone chargers. After strangulation, the victim was also stabbed with a knife in
her stomach. The police is suspicious that it is the handiwork of some insider as there were several indications to this. The SHO of the Rama Mandi police station, Vimal Kant, said the body seemed to have been dragged around the house. "The blood stains on the floor and the knife had been washed off. The gold earrings and bangles of the deceased and other valuables in the house were intact and not removed. Had it been someone from outside, the motive would have been clearly to loot, which is not the case," he added. The SHO said, "We have come to know that the son of the deceased often had a spat with her. He had done hotel management course, but is jobless. He is also reportedly hooked to drugs. He has told us that he had gone with his friend who wanted to purchase a new bike. He said he returned and found the door of the room bolted from outside. He said the culprits had themselves washed the room and removed evidences, which seems quite unlikely. We will first probe the involvement of the victim's son in murder from all angles before checking out any other aspects." Fourth murder in fortnight
It being the fourth murder in the city in the past fortnight, the incidences of heinous crime have been on the rise. While a tonga owner, Bagga Ram, was allegedly beaten to death by head constable Rakesh Kumar and two money lenders on August 8, an NRI from New Jawala Nagar, Kuldeep, was done to death by his wife Sonia and her paramour Manish on August 14. Two days later, 30-year-old youth Vicky had died after a brawl on Dhilwan Road. |
Gastroenteritis outbreak in Madhuban Colony has health officials on their toes
Jalandhar, August 20 The outbreak of the gastroenteritis in the area has further caught the district health authorities napping as the water supply pipes, crossing from choked sewerage lines, started supplying contaminated water in the residential colony. After receiving reports of gastroenteritis gripping over two dozen residents of the residential colony, the panicky health authorities had not only collected samples of potable water from the area last evening but also deployed its teams there. The faulty and the leaking water supply lines were also repaired after digging the suspected spots in the area. Area residents complained to have been getting supply of contaminated water for the past couple of days, following which certain persons have been suffering from stomach ailments. The number of such patients, including elderly persons and children, had swollen to over 30 in the last three days, revealed Sukhdev Raj of the colony. As the situation started worsening, the area municipal councillor informed health officials, following which teams of doctors and paramedical staff were deployed. A team of doctors, led by Dr Satish Sood, Epidemiologist, visited the colony today and examined over 65 residents showing signs of different ailments. Out of them, over 22 were found normal. The doctors have to call 108 Ambulance to rush a serious patient to the Civil Hospital. Taking a serious note of the situation, the health authorities also held a medical camp in the colony and distributed chlorine tablets and pamphlets among residents. The health authorities have also asked the Municipal Corporation to join hands with them to provide safe drinking water in the colony, said Civil Surgeon Dr RL Bassan. Up in arms against the local civil body, the area residents complained that gastroenteritis broke out in different residential areas of the city during every monsoon and claimed human livesm but the authorities always swung into action late. Deputy Commissioner Shruti Singh said the patients suffering from gastroenteritis and diarrhoea would be treated free of cost. Officials of the Health Department have been asked to organise health camps in the colony, while officials of the Municipal Corporation and other departments were directed to detect and repair the faults to ensure safe drinking water in the area. |
Cong prepares to regain lost ground in Doaba
Umesh Dewan Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, August 20 Presently, there are 23 assembly segments in Doaba, which includes Jalandhar (9), Hoshiarpur (7), Kapurthala (4) and Nawanshahr (3). From 16 seats in 2002 assembly polls, the tally of the Congress dipped to just four in 2007 elections. It was a shocker for the Congress that despite the BJP being on a weak wicket in the 2012 assembly polls, the Congress failed to capitalise and manage to pocket just six seats. While, the Congress leadership had initiated the process to regain its lost ground in the crucially important Doaba region in April this year by appointing Banga MLA and Dalit leader Tarlochan Singh Soondh as party's vice-president and zonal in charge of Doaba but now Bajwa has certainly given an impetus to the party activities in the Doaba region. Speaking to The Tribune Bajwa said the panchayat election results and his recent visits here clearly indicate that the Congress had recovered a lot in the Doaba region. "It is a fact that during the last assembly polls, the Congress did lost some percentage of Hindu votes. But now, with traders and urbanites facing the heat on account of anti-industry and anti-urbanite policies of the Akali-BJP government, the tide is bound to be in favour of the Congress in the next general elections", asserted Bajwa. According to the political experts, the BJP's silence on the issues affecting the urbanites and traders has put the party in a tight spot. "The BJP has miserably failed to protect the interests of the urbanites and industry - their main vote bank. Whether it is issue of the policy for regularisation of illegal colonies, e-trip, property tax, so far the BJP ministers and leaders in Punjab have not been able to put pressure on its alliance partner to ensure that the interests of the urban populace and traders are protected. This will only benefit Congress", said insiders in the BJP. Meanwhile, Congress leaders also pointed out that during the 2012 assembly elections, Dalit voters drifted towards the BSP. "Dalits have got to know that it was a ploy of Sukhbir Badal that the BSP candidates should contest elections from all the 117 assembly segments so that the Congress votes were divided. In the 2014 elections, Akali's will not be able to erode the Dailt votebank of the Congress", says Tarlochan Singh Soondh,, zonal in-charge of Doaba. |

Domoria ROB starts developing potholes within a year
Jalandhar, August 20 The ROB connects a number of localities with the city railway station and was opened for public in February last year. Besides the pothole, the road at the start of the ROB towards all the four legs of Tanda Adda, railway station, Kishan Pura and Qazi Mandi is in dilapidated condition. A number of potholes have appeared on all the four legs of the ROB. These potholes and gravel scattered around them create a lot of problem for commuters while ascending and descending the ROB. Their difficulties aggravate during rain as water accumulates in these potholes and pits after downpour. A social activist, Rajat Mohindru, demanded that the authorities concerned should immediately repair the damaged part of the ROB to avoid its further damage and the responsibility should also be fixed for its damage within the year of its inauguration. The road near all the four legs of the ROB should also be repaired and at least the entire 0.5 km road from the flyover to the city railway station should be reconstructed as it was an entry point to the city, he demanded. |
