Phagwara, August 20
Hundreds of activists of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) sat on a dharna outside the Rawalpindi police station protesting the alleged excesses of police against Dalits in Phagwara on late Monday night.

They also blocked the vehicular traffic on the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur road.

BSP state general secretary Jarnail Nangal, who headed the demonstration, alleged the Rawalpindi police went to a village house to arrest an accused wanted in an attempt to murder case. But since the accused could not be traced, the police misbehaved with his mother Jaswinder Kaur, locked her in a room and threatened her she send her son to the Rawalpindi police station or face consequences. BSP leaders Harbhaghan Khalwara, Ram Murti Khera and Amrik Panchhat were also present.

Later, the dharna was lifted when Phagwara Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Manjit Singh along with other police officials reached the dharna site and expressed regret on the unfortunate incident. He assured the protesters to provide justice.

The traffic was restored after the dharna was lifted late last night.
