No registries in illegal colonies
Jalandhar, July 14 As per the orders, an applicant who wants to get his property registered will also have to submit an undertaking from the authorities concerned that the land falls in an approved colony. The authorities concerned could be the Municipal Corporation or Jalandhar Improvement Trust of PUDA or District Town Planner, depending on the location and the scheme area. Going by the orders, the tehsildars and naib tehsildars in Jalandhar-1 and 2 sub-divisions did not register any property which came without an undertaking and told all applicants to procure a copy of the same. As a result, there were hardly any land registries done yesterday. Naib tehsildar DS Bhullar said he had almost been sitting idle since morning, with everyone being returned and apprised of the new rule. It is also learnt that since 65 per cent of the plots in Jalandhar fall in unapproved localities, the number of registries is bound to go down drastically. The officials feel that even as the collection of revenue department is bound to fall, there is no other way to break the nexus of the illegal colonisers. SDM-1 Iqbal Singh Sandhu confirmed having received such orders. He said the orders had been passed onto the tehsils for implementing the same immediately. The move is also likely to be opposed by politicians and councillors, most of whom are directly or indirectly are involved in the business and are making a whopping income. They are likely to do so by showing concern for gullible people who have already purchased land in such areas and now want to dispose it of. |
Woman kills her kids, commits suicide
Jalandhar, July 14 Paramjeet Kaur gave the poisonous substance to her son Ramandeep (11) and her daughter Sonampreet (6) before consuming the same when her husband Hardeep Singh was not there. Villagers came to know about incident and took them to a nearby hospital. While Sonampreet died on way to hospital, Paramjeet and her son Ramandeep breathed their last at the hospital. The police found a suicide note tied with the woman's right wrist in which she had stated that she had killed her children and committed suicide as they had a huge loan to pay. However, Hardeep informed the police that they had not much loan to pay. Meanwhile, the police sent the bodies for post-mortem. |
Will move apex court, say PHRO, victims’ kin
Jalandhar, July 14 They said they would demand an investigation into the statement and also police protection for him. PHRO vice-president Kirpal Singh Randhawa, general secretary Gurbachan Singh as well as Dalbir Singh and Paramjit Singh, patrons of the Khalra Mission Committee, and relatives of those allegedly killed in fake encounters demanded justice for the victims of the said fake encounters and also a CBI investigation into the matter while addressing the media here today. Some deceaseds' relatives narrated the stories of how their kin were allegedly picked up by the police and killed in fake encounters even as their plea for justice remained unheard to this date. Harbhajan Singh, brother of Baghel Singh, who was killed in an encounter on January 19, 1992, said his brother was picked up by the police from Tata Nagar in Bihar on a "Punjab Police Production Warrant" on January 14, 1992. He alleged that his brother was brought to Punjab and badly crushed under a bulletproof tractor. Harbhajan said their father Bahadar Singh had been the district president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, but today his story remained unaddressed even by the people who had formerly expressed their sympathy towards him. Harbhajan also added that initially living in Tarn Taran, their family had moved to Mumbai and then to Tata Nagar all due to the scare of the Punjab Police. He said he had written to the Punjab Governor, DGO and the Punjab and Harayana High Court on the issue, but to date his brother’s murderers walk free. Notably, SI Surjit Singh had recently stated to the media that he had conducted 83 fake encounters on the orders of his senior police officer. He had also made a plea to the HC, asking for protection, claiming that his life was in danger. The plea, however, was rejected by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. A Jalandhar resident had also moved the HC, filing a PIL based on the same statement by the SI. |
Long-duration power cuts leave city residents high and dry
Jalandhar, July 14 Apart from the imposition of weekly off days for the industry, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has started imposing power cuts in the domestic sector as well. These cuts, varying from four to six hours, are being imposed in the residential areas of the city. The power scenario was so bad last night that some city areas, including Model Town and Indra Park, witnessed a three to four hour power cut. Residents in the Chhoti Baradari area had a tough time beating the heat on account of a four-hour power cut in the morning. "One-hour power cut during the evening hours is routine. With no rainfall, increased level of humidity, it becomes extremely difficult without power. What is strange is that it has been years since we have been hearing that Punjab will become power surplus, but every summer, people have to suffer on account of long-duration power cuts," said a housewife Sangeeta Tiwari. Residents of Guru Nanakpura also aired similar views, saying they are also facing a tough time on account of the power cuts. Other city areas witnessing power cuts included Mota Singh Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Gurjit Nagar, Maqsudan, Sodal, Adarsh Nagar, Defence Colony, Ladowali Road and Surya Enclave. Residents in a majority of the areas said if there was power shortage, the cuts should be imposed during the daytime and not at night. Meanwhile, it is learnt that in some areas, water supply also remained disrupted due to power failure. |

State-level special gold winners languish
Jalandhar, July 14 The listless association’s inability to organise sports coaching camps for special children, inform parents about state or national sporting events or to organise sports events in the district, have cost many parents dear, as they say their children’s talents are falling prey to apathy. The DSOA hasn’t organised any district-level Special Olympics event in the past two years (the last was in 2011). While ideally it holds annual coaching camps (for out-of-school special children) and an annual Special Olympic event to showcase district-level sporting talent, the Jalandhar DSOA hasn’t held any such activity for the past two years. Despite the apathy, some sporting talent has blossomed and even represented the district at the state level, but none of them received a call for the national-level camps. Talking to The Tribune, Jaswinder Singh whose son Gurpreet Singh Khurana has been bagging gold medals in shot put, in Punjab Special Olympics, said, “My son won a gold last year at the Punjab Special Olympics, Sangrur. He has been winning for the past seven years as well, but no one ever approached us with information about the national Olympics or how to apply for it. Earlier, the school authorities told us about the Punjab Special Olympics. But after he left school (he is now 18), we have been taking him.” “We were eager to get a coach for him. I had taken him to Army School because they have a coach, but since he is overage, he can’t be admitted to the school. His is a regular gold winner, but the district or state authorities have never bothered to follow up for the nationals,” he added. The parents of Ishwinder Singh, who won a gold medal in Sangrur last year (50 m and 100 m race), have similar complaints. GP Jindal, secretary of the District Special Olympics Association, confessed that there was no special activity being undertaken under the DSOA. “Special schools are not interested. They don’t send their students.” Talking of out-of-school children, he said, “The Parent Association (Chanan Association) is responsible for that. We can’t do anything. Since there is no motivation, the association work suffers.” Speaking of funds, he said, “We do not get any funds from the state government. This year we haven’t received a single penny.” Amarjit Singh, president, Chanan Association, said, “The DSOA is unresponsive and sometimes parents as well. To arrange coaches we need the cooperation of both.” (After request to the police by him, a coach had been arranged last year for special students, but no children turned up). When reminded that only one school in the district had a coach and out-of-school children did not have any sort of sports backing from the DSOA or the Punjab Special Olympics, he said, “There is A general dearth of coaches and special educators in the state. The government can’t generate coaches. The district associations, parents and schools will have to jointly arrange coaches. We can’t arrange any sitting here in Patiala. In other places too, there is a great reliance on voluntary coaches. However, we can train coaches and provide sports camps for special students. Letters for the upcoming National Camps for five games to be held at Ludhiana on August 10 and 11 are also in transit and will shortly reach all schools, associations and DSOA office-bearers.” “We are also working to address the special coaches and educators’ crisis in the state by opening training institutes. The crisis will shortly be addressed,” he added. |
With special ability, Sukhwinder makes country proud in floor hockey
Jalandhar, July 14 A Student of JSS Ashakiran Special School situated in Hoshiarpur, Sukhwinder had never been involved in sports nor ever dreamt of making it this big in the field until he made way into the school at the age of 15. While he was initially unable to carry out even his basic day-to-day chores properly, gradual grooming brought out the best in him and soon his sporting talent was indentified and exploited by the school authorities. Sukhwinder’s journey into sports started as the school encouraged him to play various games. He first represented Punjab in a state-level floor hockey-championship in the year 2010, held at Shimla in which the state won gold. He went on to attend national camps in Shimla and Delhi in the year 2011 and 2012. At a camp in Bilaspur this year, he was shortlisted for the national team. He represented the country for the 2013 World Winter Games held at Pyeyong Chang in South Korea, where his team bagged the silver medal. Proud of his achievements, his coach Gurprashad said, “He was quick to pick up sports and is a very eager player. No wonder, he hit three to four goals in the South Korean tournament and the team emerged second. He is good in many other sports as well. He has also been a gold medallist in various racing endeavours.” However, speaking on the government's role, Gurprashad said, “The government is trying what it can do at its level, but while there are accolades, honours and felicitations for other players, no one spares a thought for special kids. Even as our school has held various functions to honour the state or national champions, there has been no state-level function to bestow honours on the special children, who are working so hard.” Notably, the school has 40 to 45 students who are part of the national and/or state teams. Going by the school record, Gurprashad, who has done a diploma in sports special education, is termed as something of a local genius for spotting and exploiting sporting talent among special children. |
