Poppy husk worth Rs 72 lakh seized: The Mansa police on Sunday arrested two members of an interstate gang of drug peddlers and seized 60 quintals of poppy husk worth Rs 72 lakh from their possession. Mansa SSP Narinder Bhargav said on a tip-off, nakas were put up at all the highways passing through the district. At a naka at Falluwala Dogran roundabout, a canter was intercepted. On a search, the police found 150 bags of poppy husk in the vehicle. The occupants, identified as Amandeep Singh and Gurdas Singh were arrested, the SSP said. Chandigarh
CM unwell, cancels appointments: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Sunday cancelled all his pre-scheduled engagements and meetings due to his ill health. An official statement here said the Chief Minister was down with viral fever and had been advised bed rest and asked to avoid travelling for the next couple of days. Accordingly, all his engagements for today as well as the three-day sangat darshan programme to be held in Gidderbaha assembly constituency from July 15-17 has been cancelled. Colonisers flay govt’s new policy: The colonisers and property dealers’ association of the district on Sunday condemned the state government’s decision to ban electricity connections and registration of plots in unapproved colonies before the expiry of the 60-day notice given by the government. Gurmukh Singh, district president, rejected the new regularisation policy, saying the government was looting the colonisers. He said the government itself had promoted unauthorised colonies before the assembly elections to get votes.

1.44 cr aid for cancer patients: The district administration has provided Rs 1.44 crore to 131 cancer patients from the CM Relief fund. The money was transferred to the institution where patients were getting treatment, said Arun Sekhri, Deputy Commissioner-cum-chairman, District Health Society, while presiding over a meeting of health department officials. He said Rs 5.55 lakh had been distributed under the Mata Kaushalia Kalyan Yojana to women who delivered their babies at government hospitals. Sekhri said 109 BPL women benefited from the scheme. 18 crore for 111 km roads: The state government has approved Rs 18 crore to construct and repair 111 km of link roads and phirnis in villages falling under the Fatehgarh Sahib constituency. Moga youth booked for raping minor: Three months after a minor Dalit girl was allegedly raped by a youth at Ghal Kalan village in the district, the police has registered a case against the accused after a medical examination of the victim. The accused, Sewak Singh, is on the run. The accused had allegedly kidnapped the girl, a student of Class X, on April 25 while she was on her way to school. Seminar for bright students today: The District Education Department will organise a counselling seminar here at the KC Group of Institutes on Monday for students, who have secured above 80 per cent marks in the matriculation examination conducted by the Punjab School Education Board this year. Kulwant Singh, District Education Officer, said 106 students belonging to 46 government schools would be provided career guidance by experts from Panjab University, Chandigarh. The State Education Department will provide guidance to students by organising such district-level seminars.
